LDH, I must apologise for such crap being spouted. Most Aussies are decent people, but there is a significant minority who think the world owes them and no-one else a living. I was absolutely shocked when some friends came to visit me from Queensland (Pauline Hanson country, actually , they were from Ipswich). When I met them in Sydney, they totally refused to let me take them to Chinatown for lunch - they objected to signs on shops with Chinese characters on them! (And, I imagine, all those Asians!)

Australian Ethnic Purity
by drahcir yarrum ini for one appreciate australia's efforts to prevent undesirables from entering their country.
i once heard the story of a british businessman, who upon arrival at australian customs was asked if he had ever been convicted of a felony.
to which the brit replied, "no, is it still a requirement here?

For the record, I disagree with almost everything Older Tom just said; I believe in taking in refugees and immigrants, and I don't believe in trying to pick and choose the "ideal population. Allpeople contribute, and an expanding population tends to create more resources than it consumes. Older populations can learn new things from more recent settlers. The glass is half full.

We're always taking in the poor and the tired. We have no ethnicity requirements. This is a nation built on immigration, and I'm proud of it as such.

What is it with you? You think I'm John Howard and can personally do anything about this situation? Are you really saying I'd let someone drown? You don't know me personally, so to make such accusations tabloids is ridiculous. The only thing I have said so far over this debate is that I don't like myself or my countrymen being called Nazis. The refugees are safe and being cared for, and will eventually find a place to settle. What is your problem?

True we've got plenty of room, but we'd need plenty of water to increase our population significantly. And I'm not against doing so. All fresh water is is ocean + energy; we've got plenty of ocean and could have plenty of energy if we were prepared to go down the nuclear energy path. Trouble is, a whole bunch of Greenpeace rent-a-crowd people from norway would be doing their darnedest to stop us from doing so!

We don't support any atrocities.
As for our "recent apartheid", that was all dismantled at the same time that stuff was being pulled down in the US. The Federal act of parliament which gave Aborigines the right to vote in all elections (they already had the vote in some states - mine and UncleBruce's in particular) passed into law in 1962 - I wasn't even born then. Should I be blamed for our "apartheid" in this case too?

Showing your total ignorance of Australian politics, eh Kent? I'd like you to tell me how I can get an MP who's never lifted a finger for me before to do so in this situation - I'm all ears.
Now, as for you, are YOU interested in helping these refugees? If so, making me and my countrymen angry by hurling insults at us helps the refugees exactly: how?
If you're so keen, maybe you could write a letter to my MP - surely a foreign dignitary with your diplomacy could get results where I have never been able to get any.
You're a real loving person! I hope you're floating around in the middle of the ocean outside a country as loving as your own some day - and I guess you would regret some of your statements
I certainly would regret all these statements you've attributed to me , if I'd ever made them! Where have I said I want these people dead, Kent? All I've said is that I resent being called a Nazi.
I favour immigration and allowing refugees into this country. I always put One Nation last on my ballot paper. If you weren't so pig ignorant of our political system here, you'd know just how significant that is!

What a lot of assumptions you DO make about the attitudes of others, Kent! No-one here has said that these refugees should die - all their material needs are being met while their final destination is being sorted out, which is why we're not screaming hysterically. Our govt is basically benign and will not harm these people in any way - we have a pretty good human rights record.
As for your attitude of "well everybody else does that" (East Timor and allowing a steady stream of refugees in) - are you sure you ever REALLY left the Dubs? You know, the place where anything good or kind done by someone was written off as being what everyone else does anyway but any minor infringement carries the death penalty (shunning, or at least a reputation of "spiritual weakness")?
