Heh, very nice points. I suppose that single table of notebooks and the Bible display is the 120-year old Watchtower equivalent of the 500-year old Vatican Library with over 1 million items.

Bible Hoarders.
by scotoma ini was really turned off by the segment of the meeting dealing with the watchtower's bible collection.
i thought i was at the antique road show on pbs.. what was that all about?
it was so bizzarre for these "annointed" ones to get off on collecting these old printed bibles.. you can get excellent scans of just about any historical document.. looked like a personal hobby of sanderson the nararator.. there is something idolatrous and at the very least a sick display of the hoarding instinct in the glee coming from getting their "paws" on these treasures.. what a disappointment to see a religion started by people who wanted to abandon all earthly things and join christ in the air, fawn over these relics carefully preserved as a memorial they can fondle.. are they really in the museum business now?

So how exactly did this "new translation" come to be?
by sir82 ina normal person, upon hearing that a new (or revised) bible translation has been released, would have 2 questions spring to mind almost immediately:.
1) who did the work, and what are their credentials?.
2) what manuscripts is the work based on?.

Either that, or it "implies" that they're hiding in the shadow of the original committee so we can't tell who did what

OK - I've had it - My letter to the KH
by LisaRose inthe whole time i lived in colorado, i had the dubs come by once and leave a tract.
but since moving to california, they are at my door so often i asked them to put me on the "do not call" list.
this did not stop them, in fact i have asked four times, plus once i called the kingdom hall and left a message, they still come, the last time this past saturday.

At least in my car groups, we always respected No Trespassing signs, when we saw them (and sometimes we missed them). Then again, a Warning: Large Trained Attack Dog sign in addition might do wonders

Just to be clear, I don't really believe that the original Committee was qualified enough to do their own translation (and in any case they used pre-existing scholarly works as a guide). I was simply pointing out to slimboyfat that the new Committee is not even claiming to have done the same level of work, that is, going back to the original languages. If they had (or claimed to have had), they would have proudly said so in the Sanderson video instead of showing us a bunch of notebooks from the first Committee.
The point is, no one in 2013 is claiming to know Greek or Hebrew, not Jackson or anyone else, so this speculation is way out there.

New WT...Revised...The Name Jehovah
by Legacy inis jehovah a hebrew name?
why i ask, because last night after the agm meeting i was thinking...would god name himself a jewish name, since he in not partial...would he name himself a name that folks could get all puffed up about & say see...god is a jew.
also, jesus, well, he came from the line of jews, not really.

Ummm! Of course, if Yahweh was truly a universal god, you'd have a point. But Yahweh is NOT a universal god, he starts life as a tribal god for Israel.
Well yes, I do agree with that. I guess I felt like answering from a linguistic perspective, since Legacy's post implied that YHWH is a personal name, when it was actually a statement. Of course more or less all personal names originally were a statement or description in their native language before becoming unchangeable units of speech. But Leolaia once wrote:
The name is probably a shortening of the longer sentence name yhwh-tsb'wt or Yahweh-Sabaoth (cf. 1 Samuel 1:3, Isaiah 6:1-3, etc.), which the NWT mistranslates as "Jehovah of armies". This rendering is not grammatically correct as it puts a proper name in a construct state; instead yhwh supplies the verb that takes tsb'wt as its object, i.e. "He makes the (divine) armies exist".
Which makes it clear that YHWH was part of a statement, not just some inherited personal name like John is today.

Surprised the Jephthah account was not rewritten
by maninthemiddle inthey had a chance to rewrite the bible and they leave the word "burnt offering" in there..
-

I think he is referring to the fact that some people assert that "burnt offering" means that Jephthah was planning to, or did, sacrifice someone to God for his victory. The Society argues that he simply dedicated her to the temple.

Ultimately, it can be argued that the name YHWH -- "Yahweh" or "Yaho" or however it was said -- is not Jewish. It is a name which expresses an action, and it is written in Hebrew because the Jews wrote the Old Testament. The problem is that his name's actual meaning should have been translated into other languages, rather than transliterating the sound of his name in Hebrew into those languages' phonetic systems. At that point, it became a personal name instead of a statement about his identity. For instance, instead of allowing a Latinized form of Ieouah to enter English, we should have been calling him "I Cause" all this time, or whatever exactly the name means (which is argued over).

That's why I think the line "Rendered From the Original Languages by the NEW WORLD BIBLE TRANSLATION COMMITTEE —Revised 2013—" is referring to a task performed by the original committee. Note that they've set aside the "Revised" note with long dashes -- it's not the 'rendering from the original languages' that is dated 2013.
