Ch 13 What Is the Good News About Religion?
1. Is all religion good?
There are sincere people in all religions. It is good news that God sees those people and cares about them. But sadly, religion has been used for evil ends. (2 Cor 4:3,4; 13-15) According to news reports, some religions are even involved in terrorism, genocide, war, and child abuse. How this saddens sincere believers in God!

Is it possible that someone who gives really gushing comments might still be awake?
by Isambard Crater inof the 50% of congregants who regularly participate, many of them give gushing answers about how appreciative they are, how wonderful jw.org is and so on, which makes me think nobody in my congregation is awake.
but maybe it's possible for someone who comes across as super spiritual to be awake?
i can't see how, though, as surely it's emotionally draining to fake it like that?

My husband's family always speaks very highly of the "Jehovah's organization" and how blessed they feel to be one of His people. Last time I read the Bible, Jesus said it was His church? They always say how happy Jehovah's people are but they're all on depression and anxiety medication! And all their conversations are negative in nature. I went into a discussion recently with them and they said that if what they believed wasn't in the Bible then they wouldn't be a Jehovah's Witness. Well I brought up some passages that are pretty basic Bible truths and they had no idea what I was talking about. Instead I got the answer, "That one is too hard for me." There was a lot of deer in headlights look for me because I couldn't believe some of the things that was said to me in some discussions. They teach them how to spit back information told to them but they can't debate a topic.
This past weekend they kept talking about "the Society." I was reading a recent thread on this forum and isn't that considered an apostate term?

hence, counting back from 537 bce (the year the bible says the jews returned home) for a full seventy years, we arrive at the year 607 bce.. .

Because of Israel’s apostasy, the prophet Jeremiah had foretold that the Jews would be delivered as captives to Babylon. In that foreign land they would be confined for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:12; 29:10).
Sure enough, the prophet’s warnings proved accurate. The general period of the Babylonian confinement was seventy years (Daniel 9:2; 2 Chronicles 36:21; Zechariah 1:12; 7:5). But why was a seventy-year captivity decreed? Why not sixty, or eighty? There was a reason for this exact time frame.
The law of Moses had commanded the Israelites to acknowledge every seventh year as a sabbatical year. The ground was to lie at rest (Leviticus 25:1-7).
Apparently, across the centuries Israel had ignored that divinely imposed regulation.
In their pre-captivity history, there seems to be no example of their ever having honored the sabbath-year law.
Thus, according to the testimony of one biblical writer, the seventy years of the Babylonian captivity was assigned “until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths” (2 Chronicles 36:21).
If each of the seventy captivity-years represented a violation of the sabbatical-year requirement (every seventh year), as 2 Chronicles 36:21 appears to suggest, this would indicate that Israel had neglected the divine injunction for approximately 490 years.
The captivity era therefore looked backward upon five centuries of sinful neglect.
At the same time, Daniel’s prophecy telescoped forward to a time—some 490 years into the future—when the “Anointed One” would “make an end of sins” (9:24). Daniel’s prophecy seems to mark a sort of “mid-way” point in the historical scheme of things.
In the first year of Darius, who had been appointed king over the realm of the Chaldeans (c. 538 B.C.), Daniel, reflecting upon the time span suggested by Jeremiah’s prophecies, calculated that the captivity period almost was over (9:1-2).
He thus approached Jehovah in prayer. The prophet confessed his sins, and those of the nation as well. He petitioned Jehovah to turn away His wrath from Jerusalem, and permit the temple to be rebuilt (9:16-17).
The Lord responded to Daniel’s prayer in a message delivered by the angel Gabriel (9:24-27).
The house of God would be rebuilt. A more significant blessing would come, however, in the Person of the Anointed One (Christ), Who is greater than the temple (cf. Matthew 12:6). This prophecy was a delightful message of consolation to the despondent Hebrews in captivity.

Best life ever. Is this a slogan that was recently come up with for jw's? I've seen it used as a hashtag on instagram for jw's, key chains, cakes, about me biography description... The first thing I thought was, isn't that a little pretentious? They complain so much about this life. From my observance the past 10 years being married to a JW they seemed to me to be miserable, in all honesty. I was always amazed at all the problems these group of people had. I've never seen a religious group of people have so many issues with each other. i always thought, well that isn't Christian. And actually when I reflect on things, I've never been treated so poorly from some of "God's true people." I've never experienced a group of religious people with so many mental and health issues as the JW's. It does make me sad in all honesty because their life could be so different and more fulfilling. When I've asked a question or debate them on something I've never seen a people so offended and angry yet they will criticize you and tell you how wrong you are to your face.
This site has been so helpful to me to gain more insight and understanding with what I deal with on a daily basis.

This article was posted by someone who runs a Facebook page called Jehovahs Witnesses & Friends and it was posted on Saturday.
I have a question.. I discovered my JW husband doing a google search on the cross and Geoffrey Jackson and the whole child abuse scandal. Do you guys think there is a glimmer of hope?
When I mentioned Geoffrey Jackson both my husband and another JW didn't know who he was. She said, "oh isn't he that bald guy on the governing body?"
I just thought it was interesting that they didn't even know who the men are on the governing body. Certainly does not emulate how the apostles interacted with the early Christians.
So I guess the "new light" is that these men on the GB are fallible and make mistakes? I'm just kind of confused now. Did this just happen pretty recently? Sorry, non JW here trying to catch up with what's going on in the organization.

Thank you guys so much! All of this info is great and will be useful when this topic comes up. I couldn't wrap my brain around this issue about the cross. Like some people have said on this site, the GB has basically given themselves Christ's authority have made things like this a salvation issue.
