My mom is into "The Secret"

lately my mom's gotten into all kinds of weird "power of positive thinking" kind of stuff.

she watches "the secret" and bob proctor videos all the time, and now she's trying to get me into it.

to me her being into this sort of thing seems kind of hypocritical.

Anyways what do you guys think? Is the "law of attraction" approved by the watchtower? In my opinion the whole concept of it is bs and I hate that she is so controlled by her emotions that she will believe anything. She is always mad at me for listening to my "satanic" music yet she gets to do whatever she wants I guess.

I wouldn't be too harsh with her. I don't know her and don't know the entire situation, but based on people I know and my own personal experiences, my guess is that there's a very, very fine line that divides "positive thinking" and denial of the sad realities. A lot of JWs' brainwashing is masked with a false sense of security and certainty about the future. Being already conditioned that way, the I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that she may fall into denial, probably maybe realizing that the WT isn't giving her the certainty or sense of security it has.

Just a guess, and I may be way off. Either way, I hope that she awakes. Facing reality can be very, very painful. Pipe dreams glazed as "positive thinking" may be what a person needs at a given moment.

I think that I saw that or a similar illustration before. I remember stating that I wonder what does any of that has to do with eternal life in paradise or being a decent person. Not to mention that that's some very capricious Jehovah is that's so important.

Aren't you a bit amazed that the WTS/JWS is still around ?

i know i am, to me its a bit of a peculiar anomaly that the wts is still around and functioning in reflection of its decades and now complete century that the wts has been bullshitting to people .

organizations like the church of god have shrunk dramatically from its heyday of the 1980's, this too was another organization that spread and grew by publishing its own magazine proclaiming a armageddon soon doctrine and its main publication was called " the truth " .

i'm guessing some of this has to do with the fact that people who get lured into this cult aren't aware of its past, its doctrines, the people who started it and so forth.

Based on what I know about this types of organizations, I am in fact, amazed. I have to give them credit for managing to survive for so long.

Experts in cults and researchers of these types of groups, all agree that there are two types of cults that tend to have short longevity. One are the type of cults that are based on recovery from addictions. They tend not to last because a lot of the recovery stuff doesn't resonate with second or third generations who have never experienced addictions or its effects, the way people who joined did. Hence, people just don't care much about recovery from an addiction that they don't have.

The second type of groups is where the WT falls into. Those are the groups that predict the end of the world. I guess that unlike other groups that get disbanded after the "end" date comes and goes and they are still here, the WT never gives a specific date. All they do is keep saying that "it's right around the corner". Those groups that predict things and give dates for some major event end, sometimes abruptly, sometimes slowly. The WT has been masterful in keeping their people expecting for an end that never arrives.

Inactive Witness Preaches To Me Today

a rather bizzare situation, this morning.

i was taking my daughter to the park, as i walk past a row of shops a car horn beeps and shouts me.

i turn round and see a car in a disabled parking space with a guy who used to go to my hall smiling and waving to me.

Chances are he's a republican too.

Jokes aside, I have encountered a few ex-JWs, not just fairly recent inactive ones, who have done similar things. The JWs is a cult that negatively influence people, and the degree of that influence varies.

To put it in Christian terms, count your blessings. To put it in secular terms, some of us have many reasons to be very grateful by leaving and maintaining clarity.

JW.Org claims they have fullfilled Jesus command to preach in all the inhabited earth.Have they really done that ? I dont think so.

apart from the fact that they have mainly followed in the footsteps of christendom before them what virgin territories have they ever gone to that christendom before them has not gone to .

i would think none.. how many lands ,countrys ,are their that they have never made any significant inroads into ?.

we are not talking about token service in any of these countrys in major cities , but a real door to door witness to every individual householder that gets it every few months as in western lands.. some that i can think of : north korea ,mainland china , bangladesh ,india , pakistan , jordan , israel , iran , syria ,burma ( sorry cant think of the new name ).

I don't think so either. Even if they have accomplished that geographically, as time passes, they have newer generations that may need preaching. Their premise in that respect has never made sense.

I don't think that the way finallysomepride is handling this thread is ok, but I do share some of the same sentiment. However, there's always good 'ol fashion, "YOU DON'T NEED TO REPLY, MOVE ON".
