  Relax...Isaac Newton said the end would come no earlier than 2060

  i just ran across this article.

  the following words caught my attention: "in one manuscript from the early 1700s, newton used the cryptic book of daniel to calculate the date for the apocalypse, reaching the conclusion that the world would end no earlier than 2060.

  i'll say this: at least isaac newton's word is way, way more reliable than the watchtower bible and tract society's.

  Yeah Newton was pretty neat--although a religious fanatic. He also apparently died an eighty-something year old virgin. He thought the secret formula that would explain the universe (unified field theory) was hidden in the design of the Jewish temple and studied it obsessively.

  I would tend to listen to him more though than those old doofuses in Brooklyn. F=MA

  I just read the article you posted--at first I thought it was a pop-up ad! That's a great article. My old physics prof must have been one of the ones who had access to those papers 'cuz he told me this stuff about Newton years ago. I wonder if the WT will have any lame comments now.

  Maybe posted before BUT, Ever see any fist-fights break out in a KH, etc?

  just curious to hear any stories on any "brothers" or "sisters", you witnessed getting into a fist fight or getting physical at a k hall or just in general anywhere?.

  how about maybe some major cursing arguments?

  i know this would probably be pretty rare, but...... any stories?

  My two teen-age brothers once duked it out. That was hilarious.

  My Mom whacked the PO over the head with my Dad's bookbag. He had called her a "spoiled brat".

  He then called a JC and tried to have her DFed but all they wound up doing was annulling her baptism.

  Later on, though, they told her that the annulling didn't count and she was still considered a baptized JW so she had better behave and stop smoking or they'd DF her for sure.

  i'm not talking about the stuff you hear at the kingdom hall, i'm talking about the "experiences" you were told of by people you knew.

  the big one for me was demons.

  so many people i know had experiences with them.

  My inactive (for years now) JW sister just called me all scared because her hubby bought some of those rip-off get rich quick CDs...and the lady on the CD tells everyone that an "entity" named Seth divulged this how-to-get-rich info to her.

  My sister asks ME (!!!) if she should be concerned over demons. (And I'm supposed to be the big nasty evildoer in the family)

  I told her she should be more concerned over losing their hard-earned money in a scam and that hubby should quit watching those late-night infomercials.

  My Dad used to always tell me as I was growing up that "life" came from the man and that the woman's role in reproduction was nothing more than an incubator. I do think the WT taught this as fact at one time and some of them still believe it. Anybody ever hear of this?

  New date for Armegeddon???

  i must have missed this on my travels thru different x-dub sites, but i think i read something on here about their "new light" regarding the timing for armegeddon.

  since its been over 30 years since 1975, how do they predict armegeddon now?

  what do they tell new converts regarding the 1975 debacle?

  In my day the Great Tribulation was the really, really big bugaboo for us faithful ones, since once armageddon started we could all just sit back and watch the "wonderful"slaughter of millions. In the GT however, the Dubs were going to be severely persecuted, many of us even losing our lives in horrible fashion. Nice way to look at our immediate future, huh?

  No wonder I'm half psycho these days.

  what do they tell new converts regarding the 1975 debacle?

  I remember after 1975 came and went (and yes, it all happened just the way you all remember--I was there) and there had been plenty of time for Adam to "name the animals" ( I remember in my old copy of the "paradise book" Adam was sitting there stark naked with some sort of squirrel in front of him!), then my father said something like no one was really sure about how long it took Jehovah to create Eve and then it was undetermined how long it was before they had sex...

  Anyway, this gets even stranger. According to some--and I don't believe this was ever published, it just shows how the human imagination can run rampant and justify any strange belief--Adam and Eve may have lived celibate for a hundred years or so, being all child-like and not realizing just what those nether parts could be used for aside from going wee-wee. I remember in 1979 and '80, a lot of Dubs were using this theory to keep up morale in the now decimated troops. Basically the big A could come at ANY TIME NOW, since no one knew just how long it took Adam and Eve to consummate their marriage.

  A woman pulled a shotgun and threatened my Dad and me when I was about 9. To give her credit I think she was just totally frustrated because had had his foot in the door and wouldn't shut up or leave--she had started out by smiling and saying she wasn't interested.

  A dog attacked me in a rural territory when I was 11--went for the throat but got my coat collar and ripped it all down the front instead. Lovely. I'm terrified of dogs to this day.

  Anyone here have experience in Native American culture/worship?

  since leaving behind jw beliefs, i have been interested in learning other belief systems.

  i am really interested in native american beliefs as i have native blood in my background, and i feel more at peace and closer to god when i am in nature.

  from what i have read, it is not a set religion with rules and such, but more a cultural/community based faith.

  I WOULD NOT advise spending some time on a reservation. They can be dangerous places and most Native Americans look with scorn on Anglos who claim to be "part Indian". They will totally mess with you.

  Go to some pow-wows, they are wonderful. Try to see a Hoop Dance if possible. Read Black ElkSpeaks for a very in-depth view of how the Native Americans (used to, anyway) view the world and the universe.

  I was married to a fullblood for 13 years. My kids are half-breeds and yeah, they get casino money now.

  I was always treated quite well but then again, they were all terrified of my husband since he was the craziest and meanest of their local tribal group.

  Has anyone ever played with a ouija board?

  this past weekend, we met a new couple in our campground, and the conversation soon came 'round to the supernatural.

  the lady said she has had quite a few supernatural experiences, and that she plays her own home-made version of the ouija board.

  my husband was all excited and begged her to play .

  I never had one but my 2nd daughter told me that she and some friends were playing with one, and she asked it her father's name. Evidently some other girl was holding the pointer and it spelled a misspelled version of his name. Well, she was skeptical and thought this girl just knew his name, so she asked it the name of her aunt (my sister) figuring the girl holding the pointer didn't know that name. She said the pointer began to move towards some letters that were'nt my sister's name at all, and then, to her horror, she realized it was the name of my DEAD sister--the one who died when she was 3--in 1957!!! No one in the family ever even knew that sister except my parents and me.

  This daughter, though, is a wannabe JW and I can't believe she hasn't exaggerated this a little. I personally wouldn't want one because I got scared of them after I saw The Exorcist (haha) but I think it's mostly poppycock and superstitition.

  I wouldn't want a skeleton laid out in my living room either--but I know it wouldn't do anything except lay there...

  I do have fun with my Tarot cards though, but I don't believe they are supernatural at all--just psychological--like reading rorschach pictures.

  Targeting the mentally ill.

  perhaps this is just my personal experience (i grew up in a less than liberal, "fire and brimstone" congregation) but it seemed to me that we attracted and "exploited" (for lack of a better word) people who had mental illnesses and most definitely should have been directed to professional help.

  i think it may be because our congregation was in a small town, and our territory was "slim pickings" as one elder described it, so if they could target the weak with promises of a glorious paradise to beef up their monthly report, so be it.

  it was easy to target those who may feel like pariahs, promise them friendship and love, dunk them and drop them when their needs interfere with the theocratic agenda.

  I think they attract each other for a lot of reasons. The Dub love-bombing attracts those who are social misfits due to their illness plus they are often superreligious themselves, or go through periods of it.

  When I was a child there was a young man who was most likely bipolar who was one of those "instant" conversions and baptisms. When he started to act funny at the meetings and with some of the cong members he was DFed. He shot himself a couple of weeks later. He couldn't have a JW funeral and I was told he wouldn't make it into the new system since he was DFed and a suicide. I cried and cried--he had been kind to me.

  Later I knew a young man who had to take a lot of meds and was convinced by some of the sisters who were into health foods and juices that he could throw away his pills if he would just eat right. Also he was a fairly recent convert so he was led to believe that the borg was all he needed, you know, prayer, meetings, field service, blah, blah, blah. He went off the deep end, got all crazy, got DFed, and died in a skid row hotel room.

  I also knew of a bizarre JW in my parent's cong after I was out who used to do his streetwork in the middle of the night in front of the all night market--scaring people half to death 'cause he looked really strange and just stood there waving the Watchtowers at them. The elders had to make him stop.
