I see no reason to belittle good efforts nor to praise them as extraordinary as witnesses do. But they at least do help their own.. and whether it is a showcase or not, non-witnesses (relatives and others) benefit, cause efforts by others can then be devoted to others, since witnesses are cared for. I see no need to employ degoratory terms, even though they are witnesses. (One reason why I left the JWs was the handling of abuse cases. However, I do not fall in the trap of thinking that everything is black and white..... like I did when I was a witness.

Just read an article in Awake (I am DA, but was given copies from my ex mother in law) on the relief efforts after Katrina. 17,000 witness volunteers from all the US as well as 13 other countries took part in the relief efforts. Relief centres were set up, some lasted for more than 2 years.... Some witnesses even quit their jobs in order to work fulltime in the relief work. 5,600 homes of witnesses were rebuilt and according to the article several non-witnesses were helped too. Even though the concentrated efforts were done to aid fellow believers, it was a huge project. I admire that part of the witness religion. I disagree with a lot of things, but they are early on such spots and efficient. However, also other groups do a lot (and in times of non-disasters, much more).... I remember when reading about andres, moe than 3000 witnesses helped out, whereas 9000 mormons did and thousands of SDAs..

WORLDS APART: Actors Going in Service
by compound complex inthe orthodox muslim faith is a constant source of debate in the western world today, and it would be obvious to draw a parallel between saras dilemma and the difficult situation of young muslim girls in a western country like denmark today.
director niels arden oplev has openly stated that this was a parallel he had in mind when he made to verdener.. .
sara goes proselytizing with her father (jens jrn spottag) and younger sister (sarah juel werner).

Please remember that everyting is not like in America. In Europe, beards are accepted in Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands. In e.g. Norway, moustaches are frowned upon in many congregations, but widely accepted in the US, even portrayed in the Societys magazines. I guess sometimes, cultural differences have someting to with it ;-) E.g. in the philippines, one can see JWs giving talks without a tie....

Specific TV, Film, Music or Computer Game references deemed inappropriate?
by veen ini was down the pub tonight and my sister said she went to see 'sex and the city' in the cinema.
i gave a lol and said the title of the film sounds just like something which would be specifically singled out at 'inappropriate for true christians' in a district assembly talk just because of it's title.. .
immediately everyone started having a go saying that what i said sounded like the criticisms of an apostate and if i went to assemblies or meetings or read the literature anymore i would know that they don't single out specific shows etc anymore.. .

I was translating from the article. One has to read the enitre synopsis. Hundreds of films are in the process of being entries in order to be nominated as one of the select films that have the chance of getting an Oscar. So there is a long way to go. but a very good start. ust imagine if a film on a JW related film had an audience of more than 10 million people in the movie theaters in the US, that equals the number who have seen it in Denmark so far...

http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Kultur/2008/08/13/103804.htm?rss=true Synopsis: The movie "Two Worlds" was a film liked by moviegoers. 315 000 Danes (that is 6 per cent of the population) watched the film this sommer, thus making it a blockbuster this year. The film will be the Danish entry for Oscar this year. The movies is based on a true story. Sarah lives with her family, that are Jehovahs witnesses. The high school girl is facing opposition when she falls in love with the somewhat older non-witness Teis. Two worlds is the obvious choice as a Danish entry to be a Oscar nominee, but it is still an untraditional choice. Two worlds is a Danish movie, but the plot could might as well have taken place in a small town in France or USA. According to the principal of the European Film College, the movie might reach far. It has a strong script and the story is somewhat old-fashioned the way it is told, which is normally to the taste of the Academy. However, more than one hundred other countries have sent in movies in the category "Best foreign-language film".

Being a social person, I`d love to meet quite a few here. However living in remote Scandinavia, there is not that much chance.... although I was hoping to meet someone while going to the US in October...
