  im an atheist and i like the idea of being an athiest but its kinda hard

  im an atheist and i like the idea that comes with freedom of though and analytical thinking that follows being atheistic vs having a religion im just kinda in a jam because i need to try and find something to completely lose the thoughts in the back of my head that say what if im wrong and i "suffer" because of it.

  i feel that if i can find something to destroy these thoughts i can be alot more comfortable with my views and opinions.

  anyone have any thoughts on what i should do.

  One of the reason that people with faith adopt a label such as Christian, Muslim, Jew and so on, is that a reward is offered to them for wearing the label, collect-able at death. Also there is comfort to be had by believing a benign god is guiding them in their present lives.

  Atheists do not believe in a reward or a punishment. I have never seen the need for non believers to adopt a label of any kind. Once we settle upon a lable to wear it becomes necessary to defend that label from becoming tarnished. It also becomes necessary to to close our mind a little in order stay on the 'straight and narrow.'

  People who decide to publicly declare themselves as strict Atheists take on all the disadvantages of having a set faith and none of the advantages. To me you either have a faith of you are free. Why should free men wear labels?

  ok, i am on my 8th book this month - not too bad for this mommy.

  anyway, i've gotten back to my previous life of indulging myself into books that you can't put down.

  little children by tom perrotta.. excellently portrayed 2 unhappily married suburbans who's repetitive wrong choices impact a their dull lives, yet alter your own moral thinking of them being heroic in their quest to find happiness with a self imprisoned/trapped marriage they each lead.

  I remember Richard Jessop very well, a portly man who always seemed to be dressed in brown, who was always kind to me.

  We spent many hours in the field service during one of his visits and then Saturday came. He stood surrounded by elders in their smart suits hoping to be given charge of a territory map by the circuit servant. He ignored them all and handed it to me, a teenage pioneer.

  He told them,' Trevor has been out with me all week while you lot were working to pay for your new cars. He does this full time.'

  Question on good and evil...

  growing up as a dub i always belived mankind was inheritantly good.

  that because of adam and eve being perfect, they then ate the fruit and so that sinful side was passed on through the generations.. since leaving i have often wondered whether mankind is inheritantly good or evil.. when wicked acts occur, this makes me think that some have this evil deep down inside of them.

  yet when someone helps others i then think that maybe some have good inside of them.. so is mankind inheritantly good or bad?

  As a race humans share something with all other creatures on the planet - the desire to survive.

  Good and evil are subjective labels. Surviving socially may involve being kind and considerate to others in a group. Defending that group may involve killing other humans.

  The difference shows itself in more subtle ways in our complex social structures. For example is it good to be competitive at the expense of another? Or should we always put others first? Those who are prepared to die for others often have a belief that they will be rewarded in another life for their altruism.

  In the end, I think that most of us are a mixture of empathy and kindness, tempered by the duty to see that our own needs are met and those of our loved ones, whatever it takes.

  me and my wife married as two dumb young pioneers who don't know any better.

  she is european and very very highly strung.

  so argueing was often.

  You say: I DO want out of this marriage but I love her dearly too, torn apart. I just find it hard.

  I am reluctant to give advise nowadays, but you have answered you own question. You want out and yes you will find it hard.

  I have many male friends who are now divorced. They all found it hell at the time - but are much happier now.

  You are still so young with your life ahead of you and there are plenty of women out there.

  Does it matter what other people believe. If they are socially responsible it is their own business. Sometimes we want others to give up their faith because their having a faith makes them a target for the anger that a lot of ex-JWs carry around.

  For many years, I used to get my Y- fronts in a twist over the inconsistency of what Christians believe. But recently I have been converted to the 'I don't give a damn, even if I am damned club.' Talking with Christians on this site, such as Burn the ships and little toe helped me to question my motive and realize that I was still angry.

  I have reached the point where I no longer care what anyone believes, in any religion, as long as I can continue to see the world the way I want to.

  We all need something to bring us a little comfort in life and if religion 'floats your boat' then why not.

  i have been going to a christian church called the vineyard.

  they have a live band and lots of singing goes on there.

  You have every right to share your feelings and explore what is behind the physical states of ecstasy that various people experience.

  It takes courage to step outside the box and examine human experience without preconditions or assumptions. It is the path to truth and understanding.
