  dawkins raises a point which some, if not many, theists will dismiss as irrelevant, but i am not exactly sure why.

  Hi there, Nickolas. I realize that these labels are not derogatory but they are not always helpful either. As humans, with the power of speech, we tend to try to reduce everything to words. This is essential on a forum like this. However some things cannot be appreciated or explained through words.

  For example, I sometimes have the most vivid lucid dreams that I watch unfold without words. They leave me with a different perspective. On waking I cannot put into words what I have experienced. The mind is capable of much more than we may realize. Though words are enormously helpful, there are times where they are not up to the job.

  It is unfortunate that anyone who does not pray to a personal god is often labeled an atheist. Many people have a sense that there is a pervading intelligence at work throughout the universe; that the universe is aware of itself. This is not enough to be a theist. A theist believes in a personal god that he or she can talk to.

  We each have many obvious beliefs going on in our mind but also subtle, less easily defined views. Labels are not helpful because not every thing in the universe, or our mind, can be nailed down and finalised. Nor is that a desirable aim.

  religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress.

  religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation.

  Religion has brought hope and comfort to many people. At the same time it has been used to control and blackmail the 'oppressed masses.'

  Marx may well be correct in thinking that religion disguises the impoverished sate that many live in. He is suggesting that liberation from poverty and political oppression is what is required for true happiness.

  The difficulty is that one of the main benefits of religion is it promises that despite death of the body, the ego will survive. This takes away the pain of contemplating our demise. This is why the bible says, "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” All religions offer a similar promise.

  A political utopia coupled with prosperity cannot offer our mortal selves the hope that religion does.

  i dont care what you are, your culture, race, sexuality, or religion (the main point of this post).

  constantly 'ribbed' by my brothers and their friends growing up (i was the oldest and the only daughter).

  Original I posted here to help come to terms with leaving the Tower. Nowadays, posting here adds another dimension to my life and provides an escape from other more serious interests.

  Debating, with a view to changing peoples mind, is no longer on my agenda. People can believe what the hell they want, as long as it doesn't go on my tab!

  i was sitting in my garage, as i often do, to chill out and i actually ended up becoming angry.. so here i am, in my garage, kicking it on the stool for the drum set that is in there (i am a pianist/composer, not a drummer).

  i start to think about all the crazy stuff that transpires on this planet.

  we have all seen shows and heard stories or maybe even witnessed events that don't add up.

  i've been thinking alot over the past few days on what makes a christian a christian, and i'm coming to some different conclusions than i ever have.... the watchtower likes to use the term "true believers" or "true christians".

  i'm at a loss here lately.
