What religion are you now?
by Michalea ini've struggled with wanting to be 'something' mostly probably to fill that hole that was left and to try and belong somewhere, anywhere really.
so i've tried penecostal, presbyterian, united churches but they all seem fake.
i always compared everything to the jw's, and didn't even realize it.

Bedtime Story
by expatbrit inlet me protect the farm.
the dog thought about it, and agreed that the family could well afford the chickens and that since the wolves did look hungry, it wouldn't be right to deny them food.
well, the dog went slinking off to his hiding place under the stairs, and the family decided that they would really have to do something, and give up one or two of the golden eggs, to protect the farm.

US Patriotism VS the Rest of the World
by Xena inabaddon and i were having a discussion in another thread regarding the differences between us patriotism and european patriotism.
apparently some people consider the us to be peopled with rabid flag waving, my country right or wrong, ugly americans.
i am wondering what the general concensus of this board would be?.

I just have one point.
Just because an american agrees with one of the official positions of the American government doesn't mean that they are guilty of blind patriotism. It sometimes means that they have made a decision based on the imformation available to them. Others make a decision based on the imformation available to them. Sometimes two different people will make different decisions based on the same imformation. Imagine that.

Are humans simply intelligent animals?
by JH in.
since man is very different from animals, then maybe we were made in god's image.
but for those who don't believe in god, how are humans any different from animals?.

Realist,
I don't really think that point needs to be argued unless you think the world is on the verge of a moral collapse. In which case I would guess that you are some form of christian. Most people are aware that we have much higher standards of conduct than say 1000 years ago. We can't assume that just because there were laws in the bible that everyone in the world followed them and if they did they would have been stoning their children for being rebellious or offering their daughters up to a mob of rapists. Invading a country and killing every man woman child and beast. Pleeeeeeease.

Abaddon,
That's almost the same thing that I said. I do agree with you on the technological issue but how do you explain the social advances? Is that merely due to the technological advances? Physically I know it isn't possible to change in a couple thousand years. Or is it? With the advances in medicine, haven't we changed natural selection? Some would say that we are degrading the species by helping the weak survive and reproduce. I don't think it's possible for apes to develop vocal chords to the point that they could communicate with humans within a few thousand years unless there is some way of artificially mutating them physically. I do think they have feelings. I was taught as a JW that humans were the only species that were capable of love but I don't believe that anymore.

The intelligence of humans has taken a quantam leap in the last 200 years. Geologically speaking, it has been a very short period of time since man didn't even have a language. In my opinion we are not far removed from apes. I do feel that all other animals are simply less intelligent but have the desire to survive and live in comfort.
It is a fact that some humans are more intelligent than others. Should we hold the less intelligent to the same level of responsibility. Are the prisons full simply because those people are less evolved, less intelligent, barbaric? Is that nature's way of improving the species? We all know that knowledge is power. For example: The first country able to invent the nuclear bomb had the power. The countries inventing and producing computers have been the most prosperous.
The problem is that so much of our intelligence today is artificial. We have learned so much from schools, television and the internet but deep down our intelligence is the same. We can easily conceal our lack of cognitive powers. Inside we are animals trying to become something different. Only time will tell whether we will succeed.

What was that Chicago AM station that you used to be able to pick up just about anywhere in the country at night? I used to love to listen to that station when the sun went down. That was all the rock I could get in East Texas after 10. PM. Surely someone remembers that station.
