  how dumb and pathetic.. no extra training should be necessary for even slightly trained and disciplined soldiers.

  i guess it is for some of the rabble that the us call "troops" though.. of course the real problem is not just those on the ground that have committed the latest attrocity.

  it is the chain of command that tried to cover it up and all the way up to the president who sanctions bombing of civilian targets with nothing more than rumour for "intelligence".. from now on america, you are on your own.

  Just who is "you" here? Just the soldiers? Or all Americans? Since almost all American soldiers are Americans and are more or less raised with American values, your implication is clear: Americans are raised such that they don't know that shooting babies is wrong. ......

  Alan darling, I've been following this thread with yawning interest, it's waxes and wanes from hairy chested tub thumping to the blind preaching to the deaf (eg: 9/11 is linked to the war for oil). Excuse my picking up the above. Perhap's you're right about Simon and he 's implying that all americans need to be taught basic human values but that allegation was not proved by your argument above.

  i sure like the comradery here for ex"s. but wonder why so many here leave their belief in god altogether.. what is it that caused disbelief?

  in it, he talked about how he 'has had to endure both his son and daughter leaving the truth.

  G'day Bavman, Sorry to hear of your troubles especially of your son's involvement. Yes It's all about your dad, his distress, his pain his feelings of seperation and loss. Do you have feelings? I don't think so. Selfcentredness comes natural to men but is an obvious universal trait among witnesses. I once met a woman at the doors who loudly declared Jehovah's Witnesses to be "the most selfish people on earth". When I questioned her on it she went on to explain that "that religion" was all about 'me surving armageddon', 'me being made perfect', 'me getting everlasting life' and so on. That woman really made me think and examine peoples motives in that light. Yes your dad is so full of himself he can't see the pain of others. Maybe a bungy jump would clear his head. Elders traditionally use talks to slyly berate those they have issuse with. I remember watching our PO use a service meeting talk to belittle his youngest son calling him a 'problem child' and going on about his problems 'keeping regular both in feild service and in the smallest room in the house' ( the kid was a terror but didn't deserve that). unclebruce

  um sorry to hear about your troubles MsMcDucket. That's an interesting observation you've made re: the connection between nightmares and a dodgy sleeping position. I've heard that eating cheese before bed causes nightmares too

  Interesting 'discussion' lol. The misunderstanding /re-interpretation of Simon's language by AF particularly so.

  I know a few Vietnam vets and the stories they tell about US methods of warfare are quite alarming. Australia and the US have very different ways of fighting. Generally our armed forces can't abide waste at any level and fight by stealth whereas the yanks fight by grunt and attempts at overwhelming force. In Vietnam helicopter pilots bombed an area with daisy cutters - a football sized bomb that blew 3"nails over an area the size of a football field.

  After they'd done the job they'd land and carry out a body count. At a party in Adelaide, I once heard an american huey pilot bragging about his '600 odd kills'. A vietnam vet workmate of mine countered with "how many of them were women and kids?" at this the guy went absolutely ape shit. (I guess most of his cowardly actions were against women and kids). I hope the arsehole has nightmares and dies a painful death (oh I do think I broke my vow not to wish evil

  Unfortunately things haven't changed. While Australian soldiers frequent Bagdads cafes and kebab shops, Americans drive around, music blearing, shooting from fear rather than intelligent evaluation. I doubt any amount of the proposed "ethics training" will stop the entrenched callousness of US forces.

  The US military could learn a lot from Australia. They'd only need check out our current operations in Timor Leste, the Solomons and Iraq.

  For all their faults and failings the US are our allies and our friendship with the american people has never been stronger or more productive.
