Thanks Introspection, very interesting indeed. I don't have my copy of the Tao handy but will be looking this up the first chance I get. As I said it is the one thing about the Tao that never rang true for me .. perhaps Lao Tzu truly was the wisest of men.

This is a deep and complicated topic. When a spider traps a fly and rips it to pieces does the fly flinch in terror when too late it sees the dark mass looming. All animals including you and I have the ability to invoke evil both on an individual level and at a tribal one. Recently we have seen good examples of evil born of mass hysteria and cold blooded political and religious leadership in Germany, Russia, China, Cambodia, Rhuanda etc..
The blackness of the Brooklyn thugs pales when compared to Pol Pot's Budhists and the Rhuandan Hutsies but is there all the same, cold and black not careing for anything or anyone but that all powerful invisible God "The Society".

Francoice and Introspection - I am Taoist but that balance of evil and good is not a viewpoint I've ever been comfortable with. Something smells fishy about it .. perhaps it sounds too much like Persian dualism .. perhaps I'm wrong .. at this stage I'm clueless but in no hurry

i enjoyed englishman's post about americans vs europeans.
i chose to start a new thread because i want to take the topic in another direction.. the usa is still a young nation and an enigma.
the nation was created by european settlers who wanted to get away from things they did not like about europe, especially religious intolerance and inflexible governments, and have the opportunity to build a new future.

Changing tac a tad to something music mouth touched on - One of the most shocking things I have ever seen on the idiot box was during a recent presentation of an american music award to native americans. (Grammy?) The first thing the lead singer said on accepting the award was "I want to thank Jesus .." the audience burst in rapturous applause while my wife and I looked at each other in horror and disbelief - how sad and what an inditement against 'american culture' .. here were grown men being honored for their contribution to indigenos american music thanking the newly arrived white mans god. Many of our aboriginal people have been subdued by western religion too but not many have been reduced to publicly thanking jesus for the earth they walk or air they breath, thank God.

reading through some of the posts re the mcveigh debate, it's obvious that there is a huge divide between the usa and europe over many issues, in particular with reference to the way that society should deal with deviants.. i think that there is a lot of other cultural differences between our societies, and i'm just wondering if this is why the wtbts has had a far higher "conversion factor" in the usa than in europe.. some of the phraseology contained in the watchtower magazines is incomprehensible to europeans.
i remember that words that are in common usage now, were, when first used in the wt, totally baffling.. the expression "no way" wasn't in common use until years after the wt featured it, like wise with "points up", also "right on" meant nothing to anyone.
indeed, many return visits to placed magazine householders resulted in them asking a bewildered dub for an explanation of these then strange terms.
