It shows how dull and boring our JW kid lives were that we actually thought an assembly was something to look forward to, hahaha

Flashback to the sixties Seatle
by Tater-T inso while making a you tube video of my dad today, i came across this in a dvd of home movies from way back, i didn't even know about it... originally shot on super 8 film, shot off screen with camcorder in 1992, with open mic, transfered to dvd in 2010 .. made to you tube in 2013.... check out the food service, without paper plates no less .. it's only a couple minutes on convention then, a little seatle conventions were a family vacation when we were growing up ... .

Clarity & rebel yes, yes, yes! Me too!
this was done in the 70s.
seems funny, now, but this is a horrible thing to put in the minds of little children. Don't forget the JW parent tells their 3/4/5 year olds this stuff. And it's so damaging. I remember constantly being afraid as a child. We had hills across the road from us & I used to look for places to hide all the time.
I also felt constant guilt over everyone who was about to die.
I also felt fear, because even at 5 I knew the great Jehovah was not going to protect the JW whilst destroying all the worldly people, why would he? All around me JW were getting cancer, having car accidents etc etc in the same way as everyone else.
By the time I was a teen I developed a lot of behaviours which I later found out were related to anxiety.
laughingly, my JW parent in one of her reminiscent moments commented once about what a carefree childhood I had!!!!!!!!! It really is child abuse to tell children these things.

There's no guilt just such a relief in not having to sit through that boredom. There is such a sense of freedom in walking away from attendance. It's amazing. Week nights, weekends they all open up for you.....free time!
The hard part I found is, that if you have been raised as a JW it is actually hard to adapt to having free time, being able to do what you want. You are not used to it. You don't have hobbies, or friends (they were all JW) no history of socialising, because your social life came from the JW. That's what is hard to establish.
No guilt though, when you leave JW, you leave guilt behind as well!

Hey wizzstick, welcome!
Oh my goodness! I remember all that 80s rhetoric so well. That's why we never got to do anything. Well, why would you plan anything? Armageddon will be here any day. ANY DAY! Luckily I was out before these changes.
You know what's funny though? People in the 70s must have gone through a similar experience with 1975 came & went. But by the time we grew up in the 80s it was never, ever mentioned.
Look forward to hearing more of your story!

Hey obs, thanks! Making vegetables into "pasta" is something I've long wanted to try, I'm going to search that brand that you mentioned in your post.
i read your previous comment about Crossfit, I had almost an identical experience, it is "culty". In the end I chose not to go with Crossfit, because I knew fast reps of weight bearing activities are not for me. Their rhetoric is so forceful though. I also experience cult like rhetoric in Bikram yoga, but I still practice and tune it out.
One good thing about paleo is that you can make an amazing Thai curry. Find a good paste with nothing artificial added. Paste, coconut milk, tiny bit of fish sauce & any meat, it's spectacular.
I make a Thai yellow curry with salmon & veg. If I'm feeling virtuos I make cauliflower "rice". If I need stodge I make sweet potato (kumara) chips. A curry over hot chips is heavenly. Don't forget to squeeze lemon on top.

Some good tips? Get a slow cooker, too easy to cook roasts in there & then slice it up & leave in the fridge - so you have a big stack of cooked meat ready to go!
Next, on a home day I slice up a lot of onions, capsicum with herbs & caramalise with olive oil & balsamic, sometimes I add mushroom, whatever veg you like - this is the base. This is the most important thing, it provides a really nice sauce that stops food from being dry and/or boring.
This vegetable base sits in the fridge & you can add in to eggs in the morning, with spinach, for an omelette. You can add it to a lunch salad, wrap or toasted sandwich. You can top it with a fried egg for lunch.
At night grab some of the meat, & add to the veg & dinner is almost ready.
If there's a particular veg you want to add, then you are just cooking one thing at night, when your tired & hungry, like broccoli, asparagus or fennel & then adding to what is already ready. I stir through spinach most nights.
Melt some blue cheese on top if you like (makes everything fancy!!!) Any non paleos or kids add some rice or pasta. Stir through cream or sour light cream if you like.
Dinner is done - its paleo, but you can adapt it for non paleo eaters.
good luck!

I think, once you say diet, food diary or I'm not going to,eat something, then weirdly you set yourself up for for failure somewhere down the line.
I understand BOTR, I have tried not eating carbs (like bread, rice or pasta) but I could never do that long term. My way has been to think about what you really love to eat & then eat the best quality of that, in not too huge amounts.
I love food!

Should all elders be painted with the same brush?
by Socrateswannabe inan hour or two ago, i was reading a topic on this forum that welcomed new elders to jwn.
there was some criticism aimed at the op and i understand that elders shouldn't be singled out as special.
one poster said he/she hates all elders.

You are not the only one in your situation Socrates, that's for sure.
I hope it helps you, to write it out....this forum, exposes us to so many differing points of view.
Good luck to you (sorry, it's late and I can't think of an alternative to luck!)

Hey socrateswannabe,
it was me, I'm a she, and I made the comment that I hate all elders. Yup!! I do!
I did clearly say that I hated the ELDER not the man. I know you couldn't find the original post, so easy to maybe not pick up on this important distinction.
An elder is a leader in an organisation that made my childhood & young adulthood miserable. It's that simple.
You know how you tell everyone from the platform to "hate what is bad". That is me, I am the bad that everyone hated. I am what Jehovah, and his representatives, like you, hate.
I am bad,i knew I was bad when I was 5, and I secretly craved tinsel & presents and Xmas.
When I had a crush on a boy at school.
When I daydreamed about going to a friends house after school.
When I wished I could go to uni. When I daydreamed crazy elaborate fantasies in my head where I was not a JW. When I didn't look forward to everyone on earth being massacred, I knew I was wrong.
All those things made me bad, and hated. I was hated long before I was DF, the DF just made it official.
Should I not hate the "nice " elder? The one who tries to be decent & kind? Who takes no pleasure in what he does? Is he different from the "bad" elder?
You are both part of the same structure, you both do the same things.
