Hi larc,
I happened to have pulled some old notes from my bookcase regarding Eynseck(blows dust off).....
Your post pre-supposes that he blew psychoanalysis out of the water. Of which it didn't.
He was quite the provacative thinker,not considered at all profound.
Those who have evaluated his theories and works actually found him to be dishonest by hiding ambiguous evidence and unsubstantiated opinions with his work. He couched these opinions in scientific verbiage,that made them sound quite legit in drawing unequivical conclusions.
It's been found that he exagerated and misled in his evidence regarding crime and personality.
Not all statisticians agree and approve of how he used factor analysis in his research.

.Phenomonology and other qualitative methods are used and approved by psychologists(of which he didn't,not all phenomena can be reduced to simple numbers,not in the realm of the psyche.He was NOt a psychoanalyst,more in the behavioral realm of psychology).
Some of his theories??
here ya go;
"Smoking does not cause lung cancer.
All things have a physiological explanation
There is a correlation between race and IQ-that blacks have a genetically transmitted handicap....
and last but not least,his insidious effort to detach the conscious mind from human action....."
I can go on,but i do think the little I shared brings some his theories into question.
I know in the course of study I took,he only gets a minor mention on the introvert extrovert theory,nothing more.
I did go thru several rather new texts here in my possession and it doesn't seem that he was any great threat to the more profound thinkers and honest researchers.
I also have some notes on what he wrote about jews and intelligence,Unfortunately,like my postings,my notes on that part are unreadable lol. Quite into eugenics wasn't he?
Thanks for the compliment on 10 nutty beliefs.I need to go thru the pile of notebooks one day here. maybe I can add something as good and relevant again :> I have mounds of writings and essays that i havent looked at in yonks ages lol.T

The third I mentioned is also a book,and I must correct myself here,it's 'relational world'(not rational) This is Dr. Wachtels seminal work!

Of course the psych abstracts are to numerous to mention.I'm sure the Uni database will spit out more than enough to whet your appetite.
And there is always Horney(one of my favs) and Fromm.
I don't know if you are familiar with object-relations theory/ the Kleinian school of thought? it's being used in this domain as well.

You are misinformed about the efficacy of psychoanalysis.
If i may direct you to a few publications:

"Empirical perspectives in the psychoanalytic Unconscious"

"Empirical Studies of the Theraputic Hour"(studies testing the efficacy of psychoanalytic treament,confirming the value of psychoanalytical treatment for various psych disorders.)

"Psychoanalysis,behavior Therapy and the Rational World"

There are many many more pubs that show you aren't aware of the clinical effictiveness and aspects of what's going on in this domain of psychology. You can also get Journals from the APA,Div 39(which I belong too regarding this topic. T

I actually agree with that experience you shared. I believe for ceretain serious disorders and issues,this place is not where they should be.That some folks do belong in a professional structured milieu,which this is NOT.
This place is no substitute for a medical and psych assessment.Just a thought,T

Cognitive theraputic techniques such as Ellis' or Becks are used more for the 'worried well'.
That would entail esteem issues,in chronic anxiety,anger and depression. In a nutshell your therapist helps you to confront irrational thoughts by re-examining them.

This technique is used with the biomedical or biopsychological approach,using meds that address and alleviate some of the severer symptomology in order to even start at any 'rational approach. behavioral techniques are also used.
From my personal and prefessional experiences,even esteem issues are approached eclectically and multi-modally.
Ellis was originally trained in the psychodynamic but was disatisified with it's slow rate of progress,not that there was no progress or use for the psychodynamic,or benefits therein.
Freud actually combined a biomedical view w/ the psychodynamic.He recognized the interplay.

Psychodynamic therapy is an approach in which the unconscious aspects of mental life are explored and brought to the conscious level. patients develop insight from this as they make connections between repressed psych info(painful childhood memories and experiences for example) and present moods and actions. It is still used effectively today. The major difference between these 2 modalities is the approach.One is directive,the other non-directive w/ the pt. That's the beauty of having many techniques to work from.mot all benefit from the confrontational schema.

I'm just putting forth the notion that as much as I like Ellis,beck bandura etc,the other psych approaches shouldn't be discounted.They need to be seen as having useful tools for wellness as much as RET.

And then, for those w/ students of psych and interested ones,you
could always get your mind blown by reading Szaz lol. The 'anti-psychiatrist' and what he thinks about all this lol. Entertaining as well as educational.
