A JW reading this shakes their head and makes disparaging remarks about a parent who would demand such a thing...all the while denying their children the oppurtunity for higher education, and then promising their children's inheritance to the Watchtower Society in WT prepared 'giving' documents. Father denies children inheritance unless they quit Jehovah's Witnesses

"from beyond the grave, father-of-four patrick carroll continued a five-decade crusade to steer his children away from being active jehovah's witnesses and into catholicism.. mr carroll wrote into his will that his adult children were not to receive any inheritance unless they met two conditions: attend his funeral and become catholics within three months of his death.. mr carroll died in april 2012. his children attended the funeral but they did not become catholics and challenged the condition in the nsw supreme court in a bid to still receive their share of his estate.. but justice francois kunc last week ruled that mr carroll was entitled to place such conditions on his will.. the court heard that mr carroll's motivation was not so much about imposing his own beliefs but rather the fact he never approved of his children becoming jehovah's witness.. the court heard that mr carroll did not raise his children as catholics, neither he or they had attended church services when they were young and he did not enroll them in catholic schools.. but when he split from their mother lillian in 1959 she became a jehovah's witness and over the next decade the couple's four children, robyn, paulene, anthony and susan, were baptised as jehovah's witnesses.. mr carroll never approved of "their adherence to that faith", the court heard.. "[lillian's] conversion to that faith enraged mr carroll, who for the rest of his life continued to express his very strong objections to lillian's and the children's member of that faith," justice kunc said in his judgement.. the court was told that all four of his children remain active members of their congregation.. in his will, written in december 2011, four months before he died, mr carroll left more than a third of his estate to his four children "dependent upon them becoming baptised into the catholic church within a period of three months from the date of my death and such gifts are also subject to and dependent my children attending my funeral.".

Convention Season-"Saving Good Seats" & Other Embarrassing Behavior
by Darth Fader The Sequel insince it is the convention season (and i am not attending this year or ever again), and i have been seeing other posts about some of the goings on at the various ic's and rc's, i am reminded of some of the truly embarrassing behavior i have "witnessed" (pun intended) over my lifetime of being a jdub at the various conventions and assemblies.
probably the most disillusioning experience at a convention that i have ever had was one year when i volunteered to be an attendant.
all of the volunteers were asked to attend a special meeting a few months beforehand to get instructions for our duties as attendants.

To anyone who has never experienced the opening of the doors to the coliseum/arena/etc at a JW convention, they would surely think that you are embellishing the story, or taking poetic license to make a point. But I've experienced it personally. One of the most disillusioning experiences I ever had at a convention was the 8am stampede for seats, while I, the lowly attendent, tried to survive in the midst of it all, similar to Kevin Bacon in Animal House

i knew many elders and servants over the years being counseled because they rarely answered.. funny thing....my mom who is 88 cries if she doesn't give a comment.

Hated it. Loathed it. But to show that you were 'reaching out', and especially so, once you made pioneer or MS, you were expected to comment at least once a meeting. Another one of those unwritten, peer pressure 'rules'...

Is this a WT sanctioned or approved action? Or was it some rogue rubes trying to liven things up? What with the WTS promoting/marketing JW.org, I wonder just who is responsible for something so out of place in the traditionally stuffy, boring convention setting.
Worse than the banners/signs themselve are the JWs on Facebook sharing the photo as if it were brought down from on high by Moses himself...

Why Do Certain "Inactive Ones" Get Bothered By The Elders While Others Don't?
by minimus init seems some inactive ones and active jws are hardly ever bothered by the elders while others are constantly called, checked up on, etc...... what gives?.

Here's another option: Fear
May not be true for everyone, and I'm not saying it's my case, but I dare say that some elders are afraid to go toe to toe with some inactive ones, knowing full well that they could not win a battle of wits with them. Or with some it may not necessarily be fear of the individual, but fear of having their beliefs shaken.
Even as I say it's not my case, there was one MS, who I was friends with, who just kept bugging me about coming back. One day he asked point blank what it was keeping me from meetings, etc. Tired of the harrassment, I just said, 'I can tell you but you won't like it. And if you don't want your world shattered, you'll drop it. But if you really want to know, we'll sit down and I'll tell you everything'. That was one of the last times I talked to him. He is no longer in my life.

New DVD review
by Laika ini managed to catch the new dvd on youtube last night before the inevitable takedown.
as a film i felt it wasn't anywhere near as good as the prodigal movie, the story wasn't as dramatic, the characters much less interesting and developed and the direction weaker.
i found the prodigal relatively entertaining (all things considered) this one was just dull.. here are some of my random thoughts anyway [spoiler alert - ha!].

Holy Cold War Propaganda, Batman!
Well, this tactic was inevitable. Because of the free flow of information in the modern world (Internet mostly), the doctrines of the WTS can no longer be defended in the old tried and true method - print it as truth and it is truth. It's too easy to debunk not only their core doctrines, but their everyday standards and practices. So, knowing that free thinkers and nonconformists are probably lost to them anyway, they will now strive to keep the ones they have in line with emotional blackmail, guilt and fear. TaDA! Introducing video dramas! Create a scenerio where what is normal to the average person or family is somehow falling short of keeping up with Jehovah's WTS standards. Make the viewer feel guilty, especially family heads. By Jah, we will have that Family Worship! How many husbands/fathers were squirming during this thing?
A couple of nitpicky observations that stuck in my craw for some reason...
Where'd they get black guys with beards? Real actors? ....or dubs allowed to grow a beard for the production? (and how is that different than being a JW actor who plays a part that requires smoking a cigarette or being promiscous, etc)
Mom went to work a 'couple of years ago'. She got a pretty good gig for being out of the work force for 16 or more years. Went right to that board room...
How many dubs can recite a scripture from Deutoronomy while laying on their back working on a sink?

Where does the Bible mention 7000 year long Creative Days?
by tim hooper into my total astonishment, there is no mention whatsoever in the scriptures re jehovah's creative days being each of 7000 years duration.. nothing!.

Abandoned the doctrine, yes. Recanted, no.
When discussing creation, they no longer give definite lengths for the creative days, other than calling them great lengths of time. They do however, give a glimpse of that old official doctrine by saying that each day could be 'thousands of years each'. Why not just say 'millions', and align more closely with science?
They've even gone so far now as to say that the earth is millions of years old, but that the creative days did not start until much later (Too bad this new doctrine doesn't agree with the Bible - Exodus 20:11) This keeps their doctrine alive, though never specifically calling out the creative days as 7000 years each. They also still claim that Adam was created 6000 years ago, keeping us in the last thousand years of day six.
It's obvious that the WTS doesn't want to be associated with creationists, so they waffle in their creation doctrine, which in fact aligns much closer with creationists than it does scientific fact. The difference between 49,000 years and 6-10,000 years is microscopic when compared to the actual age of the universe - 13.8 billion years.
