When I was a kid the book study conductors always just picked someone out of the crowd. This was usually when no one raised their hand to begin with. I used to cringe just knowing my turn was coming. I'd try to hide behind the person in front of me so as not to be seen. But later on I saw a pioneer brother at the hall refuse to comment when called on out of the blue. No one had raised their hand to answer and the brother on the platform picked on him, assuming, I guess that the pioneers had all the answers. This pioneer brother said "I did not have my hand up". The brother on the platform asked if he would like to comment anyway. "No" was the answer. I'm sure he caught hell later, but I realized then I didn't have to answer if I didn't want to. From then on I was always prepared to refuse to answer if called on out of the blue.

Did you ever get put on the spot?
by Soledad inby that i mean from the platform at the kingdumb hall?
i remember some study conductors who had the habit of calling on people in the audience that seemed distracted or unprepared--on purpose so as to embarass them.
some were so out of it when the mic was handed to them they had to ask what was the question, why did you call on me i didnt have my hand up, etc.

"Bible Students" and 1919
by artful ina have a couple of questions pertaining to the wtbts and "bible students" from 1914-1919 and onward that i would appreciate receiving your feedback on:.
1. does anyone know how many "bible students" (jehovah's witnesses) there were in 1919?
i know that wtbts keeps such meticulous records of their "flock" now, but i have no access to material that covers that time period.

While we are on the subject of 1919. A key Watchtower doctrine is that Jesus found and appointed a Faithful and Discreet Slave Class in the year 1919.
An interesting doctrine. While Hooberus goes on to disprove this doctrine with the Society's own publications, something I would like to ask is: How can you prove, thru the Bible and only the Bible, that Jesus would find this FD&S in 1919?

He has no intention of keeping any of the offensive coaches, even though Jerry is pushing him hard to keep Wade Wilson as QB coach. He probably won't keep Joe Avezzano as special teams coach either, but that's not final yet.
Why wouldn't he want to keep Avezzano as special teams coach? This year notwithstanding, Avezzano has been a good special teams coach. I'd want to keep him. His coaching the indoor team would have to end though. You can't do both of those jobs. Either you're the Cowboys special teams coach or your the Desparado's head coach. Decide which one you want to do.

I'd say Bro. Courteau is in for a back room session when the CO finds out. His intentions may be good and sincere but it doesn't fit in with policy from headquarters. In fact if this is the scenerio I will feel a little sorry for him. Maybe he's doing what he feels is good for the community in general, not just the JWs and he will get in trouble for it.
Now if this is sanctioned, then we have another problem. Hypocrisy once again will be rearing its ugly head. "You everyday dubs do as we say, but ignore what we in charge do".

Did you keep "satanic" LP's as a JW?
by Pleasuredome in.
i kept all my iron maiden records 'cos they weren't satanic in my opinion and the music was just too good to be thrown out.
anyone else keep records that would have been deemed "satanic"?

So we(our generation, that is) have become our parents, LOL. Whatever the "oldie" station plays, that's okay. But this new devil music called heavy metal and rap is obviously demon inspired. Brittney, Christina and all the other little vixen singers are just tools of Satan. We should stay clear, LOL. Bands with weird names should be avoided. Who knows what demon helped inspire someone to come up with the name Audioslave.

LOL, Blondie. I like Sinatra but nobody ever singled him out along with the music of my generation. My stuff got trashed while parents kept all the Rat Pack stuff and other music from that time. Like those guys were any more moral. Right.
I had that same Rush album. Parents took one look at the cover and out it went.

Dancing today
by Haereticus inif i am not mistaken then about forty years ago there was a study article in wt, which quite clearly stated that a mature christian should not dance with anybody else than ones spouse.
somehow i remember that the article gave an example of a couple visiting another couple and let's say the male host would grab the female visitor and lean on her going together circles for few minutes.
then the article went on asking what the visiting male would feel in this situation and what diffrence music would make?

So using your bible trained conscience is not allowed then, huh? So why bother training it? Geez. How did I ever allow myself to get caught up in this crazy lifestyle?

My album collection was purged after a Circuit Assembly that highlighted the debauchery of the music of the time. Not my choice. Parents went through my collection and got rid of what seemed inappropriate to them. Course they kept their Sinatra records. I replaced the most fav of those albums as time went by. Looking back on it, it really was stupid. The whole backward masking thing reeked of illogical ramblings of hysterical paranoid zealots.

Finally drew the line one day when someone happened by the house and saw a 'Santana' album and commented that the name was just too close to Satan and it made them uncomfortable. Telling them that it was a man's REAL name made no difference. After that, all music was kept out of sight and earshot.
I guess JWs can't be Buffalo Sabre's fans either, huh? They got a guy on the team with the last name Satan. Pronounced different but spelled the same. O hockey must be demonized. No more going to hockey games or *gasp* don't watch SportsCenter. They might show Sabre highligts. We wouldn't want to see "that name" on our TV screen.

When I was younger, there was no dancing at any kind of get-together, including weddings. As I got a little older, wedding receptions started including dancing. But the music was tightly controlled. And then a few years after that, some get-togethers started having dancing, but the music had to range from all over, so as not to leave any age group out. Of course hard-core dance music, techno and disco were not allowed. Just middle of the road stuff. And then sometimes lyrics would get the JW DJ in trouble.
I remember in the 70s, discos were frowned upon. Matty said that discos/clubs are now banned. Banned in what way? A DFing offense? Or just not recommended as discos were not recommended back in the 70s? I'd like to see the reference on that if available.
