Studying the new "Keep on the Watch!" brochure - The Illustrations (Part 2)
by ozziepost inwho else but a dub would wear a business suit to the beach?
the message given to new witnesses as they reach the end of the brochure is that it's quite normal.. .
on page 31 an illustration shows a serious, bespectacled man in business suit and tie who is seen explaining an opened bible to his companion, presumably a worldly person since he's dressed in a caual, open-necked shirt.

The witnessing on the beach reminded me of something that was being pushed right before I left...remember parking lot witnessing? OMG...we'd lay in wait at a Wal-Mart parking lot, wait for someone to pull in and get out of their car and we'd run, literally run over to them to try to get them to take the mags. Then Wal-Mart complained, so instead of targeting people going in, we targeted people leaving. That was harder because we were walking up to them as they were coming out and they would see us and take evasive action to avoid us. I lost count of how many people I startled who were snoozing in parked cars. Walk up and knock on the window, they'd jump half out of their skin. After a while, Wal-Mart prohibited any kind of solicitation without their permission. They put up signs, hired off-duty deputies, etc. Of course some felt persecuted, but I always felt uneasy about bothering people in a parking lot.
I remember being told that we would be vegetarians in the new system. Except for this one elder who loved to fish. He proclaimed from the stage that we would eat seafood because fish didn't feel pain the way animals did. (not to start a animal rights argument...it's what he said, not me).

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at the Kingdom Hall!
Change that to read:
You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is in church!
and I'd bet that is what it used to read before some cutesy JW got ahold of it. I have a friend who considers herself "christian" and is always sending inspirational and religious emails. This one is similar to ones I get from her.

Today, I'm Going To Bring The "Crisis of Conscience "Book To My Mother
by minimus inmy mother has been expressing to us how she reluctantly is beginning to see that the organization indeed has some problems.
she is starting to "feel" that things aren't right.
this past thursday, they gave a "marking" talk for my daughter who hasn't attended a meeting in years.

Having read how your mom has been treated lately, I agree that it's time to help her see what's going on and I hope you help her to get free and that she lives her remaining years free and happy.
But your experience gave me pause to wonder about my own parents and their age group:
I wonder if it's always good to upset older ones who have known no other life than being a JW. I'm not talking about the evil elders or snobby pioneers, or helping parents who want to escape, I'm talking about the everyday, trying to do their best, rank and file JW who like being JWs. My parents were good, decent people, raised their kids well. They were happy people as JWs. They are now old and retired without too many years left on this planet. Even though I am inactive and they think I'm taking wrong steps, they don't make too big a deal out of it, just once in a while I get a snide remark. They are happy in their lives now as they were before. Do I want to upset their happiness by exposing their belief system? Maybe the regrets for a life wasted would be too much for them. Maybe the anger would make them bitter and unhappy. As long as they are happy and aren't being mistreated by the congregation, I'm willing to let well enough alone. As long as they are happy.
I'm not questioning you minimus, like I said, your mom is being mistreated and nows the time to show her that she doesn't have to be unhappy the way she has been lately. Good luck to you and her.
I guess I'm saying that each one of us needs to weigh matters before we try to "free" aged parents. They may be happy and we just may make things worse by creating a controversy.

I knew a brother who had a very dry sense of humor...he got a door one day and the householder said he wasn't interested, he was a Baptist. The brother looked at him with no expression on his face and deadpanned, "You can be forgiven for that".
It was funny as hell at the time, but now I save that line for anytime anyone says they are a JW.

Do you like to get drunk???

Not anymore....
When I was young, but still a JW, we would push the limits on drinking. Even though my friends got plastered, I usually just got a good buzz.
Much later in life, after becoming inactive but before trying to leave the JWs, I started to let loose more and on different occasions, several times a year, on vacation, work trips, parties at home, I got good and smashed. Passing out and not remembering what I did the night before smashed. A year or so ago, I decided I was too old to be that stupid, so I have willed myself to drink less...a few beers or 2/3 drinks and when I feel the buzz, I back off. No more hangovers, no more wondering what I did the night before, no more regrets over stupid stuff said and done.
What's interesting is to be the only sober person in a room...depending on my mood, it can be high entertainment to watch them or highly irritating. When you see how stupid everyone gets, then you realize being drunk ain't so great after all.

Were You Affected By The Cliques In The Congregation????
by minimus inevery hall has their cliques.
elders and their family/friends always seem to have certain ones that they were close to.
i knew of only a few that didn't lament they never seemed to fit into the "clique".

I do believe JWs are MASTERS of leading the double life! Subterfuge and deceit is a trait of a real good Witness!
It's a trait of a real "bad" witness who wants to be seen as "good" is the way I see it. There are many JWs who talk the talk and walk the walk...those are the ones that you have to watch out for because they'll blow your cover real quick if they catch on to you.
But, yes, a good many JWs become masters at leading double lives. How can we determine if we lead a double life or had leanings toward a double life? How many of us dreaded sharing classes with other JW kids in school? Ever had that sinking feeling when you realized that the new employee was a JW, a pioneer no less?

Staying under the radar and out of trouble was my specialty. Back then it was to not get caught, um, "doin' things" (that was before my "mature" stage when I tried to be a good lil dubbie). Now, I use that skill to stay faded and not raise flags with my new life.

Nancy can't watch scary movies.
by Nancy Drake inlast night, i got up for work (third shift) everyone in the house is asleep.
after watching the movie "the ring" earlier that day with my neice and nephews, i started scaring myself with my thoughts.
my son's tv has a weird short and sometimes it comes on by itself...(one time i woke up around 5 am and saved by the bell was blaring in his room)...(now that's scary).

When the first McDonald's opened in the old USSR, the people in Moscow were ecstatic. As one patron put it after buying a cheeseburger: "Not only do you get a hot meal, you get the toilet paper to use afterwards."
