A brother in our congregation just died from cancer. They couldn't operate without blood. So, he just sat back and wasted away. . Why don't you ask him?

Fred Franz Discredited a GB -- Part II
by RationalWitness infred franz discredited a gb -- part ii .
after elaborating on how jesus christ had 'used' c. t. russell as a modern-day evangelizer, franz continued his talk with an historical look at the origins of the gilead school, evidently intending to remind his audience that it was not a "governing body", but the president of the society who had been 'used' by god to bring about this marvelous educational institution.
his comments regarding how the society's president was "viewed" are of particular note, as they suggest what the governing body's nearly year-long discussions were aimed at bringing about ...well, so that watch tower bible and tract society, uh, operated throughout the years, and then, to make the story short, we come down to the year 1942. and i can remember a special meeting that was held on thursday, september the 24th, of the year 1942. a new president had, eh, arisen to preside over the affairs of the watch tower bible and tract society.

I would be interested in hearing Maximus' read on whether or not the change indicated an internal power struggle. I've wondered if the younger brothers haven't gently pushed aside the aging and frail (senile?) GB members. A sister once told me about an opportunity she had to eat a meal with Schroeder. She said that it was occasionally difficult to folow him. Seems he had difficulty maintaining an entirely coherent line of thought for extended periods. That was several years ago.

Fred Franz Discredited a GB Part I
by RationalWitness intoday's history lesson .... fred franz discredited a "governing body".
the last page of the february 1, 1976, watchtower, was devoted to a notification entitled "governing body adjustments.
and so that's what happened with philip, how he became an evangelizer.

Excellent post! More than anything else, I appreciate knowledge of the inner workings of the organization. I grew up with an almost superstitious view of the governing body and any annointed I happened to know. I'm looking forward to the second part.

GB Split Over Bible vs. Policy
by Maximus inplease read the following brief paragraph carefully: .
"once again, the ruling ecclesiastical class suppressed efforts to make gods word available to their flock.
they violently silenced a voice that pointed to some of the errors of their non-biblical beliefs.

It's interesting that the society always berated the Catholic church for not allowing its members to read the Bible. The society allows JWs to read the Bible as much as they want but doesn't allow them to reach any conclusions other than those approved by the society. What good does it do to be able to read the Bible under such circumstances. At least the Catholic church was honest. "Don't read the Bible", they said, "because you can't understand it." The WTS society has created an illusion of independant study. "Here are the conclusions you are going to reach, now read this", summarizes their approach. There is no difference in the end.

3 of the Slimiest positions in the WT Org.
by D wiltshire ini think three of the slimiest jobs you can have in the wt org.
1) public relations; (you have to tell lots of 12, 14, truths).
four thumbs down.. 2) writer; (you have to be able to slant the truth or someone will replace you).. 3) legal department, ( lie with zeal for your side, and instruct others how to lie with zeal).. .

being on a judicial committee can indeed be a stressful assignment. I am very grateful that I'm no longer in such a position. The worst of it is that the Society wants to pretend that the local body is acting on its own, when in reality it is merely a puppet.

Please give us excerpts. I'd be interested in any failed predictions as well as general kookiness.

Objection by an elder
by cnn77 ini approached one of the elders with some of my doubts..... i mildly pointed to the fact that the wtbs had been errent in it's prediction of 1975 as well as some of the other "new light" issues.. his response was one which i have heard many times before: "the society is made up of imperfect men.
interestingly, in 99% of cases most witnesses will accept this explanation and feel guilty for questining a their fellowman ( the humaistic side of the organisation is unconscioulsy impressed onto the mid of the questioner).
at least that is how it has worked on me - until recently.. the next time i am fed this line of reasoning i would like to ask the following question: "ok brother elder, i accept that they are not perfect.

The WTS has the best of both worlds. They demand to be respected and obeyed as though they were infallible, but when they err, they want our patience and understanding.

Why did you get baptized?
by NoLongerAjw inwas it for love of the kingdom hall and jehovah?
pressure .. felt like you had to?
for me it was because all my friends my age had gotten baptized.. and it was left up to me to do it too.. to fit in i guess.

I was too young to know better. When you think about, even 15 or 16 is far too young to commit one's entire life to a cause.
Especially if their baptism is the end point of years of indoctrination with no exposure to any other point of view. A question for Godrules. At what age could one legitimately claim to have been too young to have been fully aware of what they were doing? 12?? 9?? When the society rips other religions for infant baptism, it's the greatest hypocrisy. When it comes to determining what one believes about the meaning of life and how it should best be led, there is no difference between 12 days and 12 years. -

Prevalence of JW Suicides - Real or Imagined?
by AMNESIAN inin one or two recent threads i've seen reference to the possibility of a rising number of jw suicides being another of the organization's very dark realities about which it is vigilant in keeping concealed from its pub populace.
is there anyone reasonably informed regarding this?
is there reason to suppose the incidence ratio among jws is any higher than among any peoples/religion?

It seems to me there is a great deal of depression among JW's. Is it higher than the general population? We could probably
only find out with the society's cooperation. That won't happen. If the rate of depression/suicide is only equal to that of the general population, that is suficient to show that there's no mystical force at work in the congregations. Jim Penton reports that the society held a meeting in which JW doctors were consulted. According to him, the brothers in charge were told that the average JW is under a lot of pressure and therefore more suceptible to depression than the average person. If I recall correctly, Penton believed this was behind the barrage of articles in the 80's that emphasized how caring God is.
