Out of the Blue, An Elder Calls

Hey Doug,

My mil kept asking the elders to come and talk with my husband (she doesn't care about my spiritual welfare). My husband, after many attempts to be polite with her - told her forcefully to STOP. He put it too her like this. "I'm never coming back to the meetings. If you keep sending the elders around to talk with me - I'm going to REALLY tell them how I feel. I will be disassociated........and then you'll never be able to talk to me again - and out of respect for your spirituality - I'll never speak to you again either. Is that what you want, mom?"

Well, since we live next door to her, and she's 86, she stopped asking the elders to come by. But she still blames me for his leaving - as if he isn't smart enough to make his own choices. Ahhhhhhhh, the life of the wicked daughter in law.

Glad you told the truth to your former friend - maybe give him something to think about when his guard is down.

Christmas Life & Eating mottos

Holiday Eating Tips

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the centre of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one
dessert? Labour Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Hello Bryan,

Wishing you the best in finding information.........and then emotionally thinking & feeling about it. Please take your time in thought making (for want of better words).....because as each new information piece comes forth - it fits somewhere in your puzzle. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes not.

It took me 5 trips & years back to my childhood city, much driving around, and even asking strangers if I could walk through their houses to try and put my memories in some kind of order. Amazingly enough, no one ever turned me down.....and thankfully, I had my husband with me.

It put a time sequence to the random memories I had and helped a lot. I didn't turn up any *good* memories. But it still helped me - some memories were rock solid, and some were distorted by being a young child, or by remembering what someone had told me...instead of the memory of seeing/experiencing the happening myself.

It's been brought out a multiple of times that JW's (and groups like them) attract needy people......even people with emotional problems. Sometimes, the controlled lifestyle suits them.......sometimes it gets worse. Point being............be could have had serious mental/emotional problems before - which is not an excuse, just a possible reason.

Whatever the reasons, it's a shame the rat poison didn't take effect sooner.

Just another reason we're all lucky to have survived the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Low Carb or Low Calorie?

i have finally quit the denial of my weight problem and realize that i need to do something about it.

i really need to get my cravings under control.

my doctor, my therapist, and my husband have all told me that.

reduced caloric intake, regular exercise & drinking AT LEAST 8 glasses a water a day.

Tried & proven - no matter what types of food. It takes a continued - vigilent - effort to take weight off and then the same effort (but more fun shopping) to keep weight off.

I've lost 50 lbs over the last year at Weight Watchers. Through them & other reading, I'm eating calories & carbs that have a significant impact on health & weight - and really value the support meetings. I eat 6 small meals a day - as I suspect I'm insulin resistant & very, very, seldom feel hunger. However, if I start eating sweets on a regular basis, or sweetener substitutes.......the sugar/carb craving comes back. It does take vigilence & self-awareness.

I've tried Atkins about 5 times......would lose 15 lbs, then no more, and actually get physically sick. It doesn't work well with anyone in my family.

10% loss of your body weight is a great start for all sorts of ills, particularily knees & heart (and a size smaller.)

There was a smoking study done recently (on news program - the other one without Katie & Matt) - the smokers who were part of a regular support group had a tremendous advantage in results over the loners. Their support group was through the internet.

Can JWs EAT Blood?

Several years back, a quote was put up on jwd where the WTBTS directly quoted a doctor who said that a blood transfusion was the same type of operation as an organ transplant, because human blood is considered an organ of the body.

I couldn't believe how some WT writer was so stupid as to allow that in print - because we all knew that organ transplants were allowed! The writer cut off the quote in the wrong place with the infamous *...*

And then Maximus called me on my post. "Stupid. (didn't say it, but meant it.) The WTBTS allowed that little quote in that magazine so that if they ever had to go to court for encouraging death/murder/suicide......they would use that quote and say "See? We've always allowed freedom of beliefs."

Of course, when I was a jw, I never saw that little quote. And I read more than the average jw.

I once read where all live transplants (hearts, liver, skin, valves, etc) - have some blood in them........because that's where the life really is. All transplants until the middle 70's were considered "eating one's own/or another person's body." Then that teaching changed - and it's allowable.

So, jw's have been eating human body parts & blood for decades now, with the WTBTS's permission. JW's now can now injest their own blood if they want (and that's what they referred to when the first blood recycling machines came out).

And the WTBTS has ALWAYS referred to a blood transfusion as the SAME as "drinking" - "Does it matter to an alcoholic whether he drinks the liquor, or shoots it into his veins?"

busted by a fake evergreen tree

my wife and i have not been to a meeting for well over a year.

we are not disfellowshipped, but would be if we admitted to the elders what we've been up to, mainly smoking.

we was both born and raised in the "truth".

An elder and his wife run a restaurant in Summerville, SC - in an ancient two-story home looking straight out of Gone With the Wind. I was mesmerized when I saw all her decorating (it was in summer) - and it occurred to me that she'd decorate the same way (a LOT) during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. I asked her what she did to get around the holidays......yet heavily decorate her restaurant?

"I do *seasonal* decorating." And then she smiled. Smart woman.

I've been doing that for years, but had a truly Christmas decorated little tree a couple of years ago. Made my husband too nervous (his mother lives about 2 houses away - but never comes over - but she *might*). So, I put my little fake tree on my back porch last weekend, putting apples, birds, baskets, snowmen, etc., on it with other plants around with stuff. He said he'd quote Brother S........ about "seasonal decorating" if any of his jw family said anything.

I do appreciate that jw's are taught & react so strickly for THEIR religious freedom - and have no respect for another's religious freedoms. And that jw's are a cult or at the least, very cult-like. Meaning, some of them can't open their minds at this time.

On the other hand, bigots, racists, Nazi's, etc., could be deemed cult-like also. Would we bend to their beliefs? I suspect not. We probably would request that they do NOT bring their beliefs into our house, remaining silent in respect for our home. But then, we most likely would not go to their house if they had their beliefs hanging up (flags, etc.)

So I guess it remains a personal, family, thing. And it's always a pain in the butt this time of year for a lot of us.

How do you know Armageddon is not coming??

There is no way to prove that something is not coming. Because there's no evidence of it "being"........so how can you prove something where there is no evidence for or against?

IF there is a God, perhaps the best advice is to live a life gentle with people, trying not to hurt, but trying (and doing) some good. At least, that's what I think.

And IF there is an Armaggedon (which of course, means there'll be a Rapture too [jw's don't like to include that little diddy])..........then it's beyong our scope anyway.

Besides, Christmas is on the way...........there's a great new *not quite kid's book" out called "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." $10.95 and TERRIFIC! It's an editorial from the 1920's in response to 8 yr old Virginia who wrote into the NY Times (I think that's the paper). A famous writer wrote back............and his editorial was reprinted every year until the paper shut down. Approximately 50 yrs. Wonderful pictures for children and adults.

So think positive - there's is some truth to positive thinking. Armageddon is NOT positive thinking. It's JW thinking. ugh.
