Should My Mother Shun My Daughter?
by Englishman ini don't know why i never spotted this before, but my daughter from my first marriage has just pointed out to me that her grandmother - my jw mother - has never ever contacted her since she was a child.
how would her grandmother respond if she - my daughter - made some contact?.
my first response was to say that i'm sure she would be delighted to hear from her, but then i got to wondering.

Englishman:
I'm stretching some because I do not know for certain the culture in England during the time of your mother's upbringing. If you have a 30 year old daughter, I would assume your own mother was born in the decade of the 1920's or 30's?? If so, it is likely she was raised with conservative values about living together outside of wedlock. That was true of most people in that generation, not just JW's. Was she raised as a JW, or did she come to it later? Perhaps the religion, with its strict views of sexual matters, was attractive to her due to her pre-existing mind-set.
It could very well be that she justifies shunning her granddaughter because of her "life-style", at least in her own mind.
However, that does nothing to explain why she did not contact the girl when she was a youth. I'm consistantly appalled by the number of JW's who have shunned the children of inactive or disfellowshipped members. How can they possibly justify such a heartless attitude? Would not the child of the former believer need even MORE contact, love and support? Not so very long ago, children born out of wedlock were stigmatized. It seems as if being the offspring of an apostate is even worse than being labled a "bastard child."

Red Religion and the Lawless Man
by GinnyTosken inive been sorting through my old jw books and found one published in 1951, what has religion done for mankind?.
skimming through it, a few sections caught my eye.. the societys comments about the dangers of the totalitarian red religion of communism are hilarious, since they easily apply to the society itself.
substitute russell, rutherford, knorr, and franz for marx, engels, lenin, and stalin, and brooklyn for moscow, and voila!.

Wow, Ginny! I wonder how many JW's baptized in the past 30 years even know of this book's existence? I wish I still had my mother's copy. Some of the older books are rife with racism. Even though other publications and entertainment (ever watch cartoons from that period?) reflected the same attitudes, that's no excuse for God's chosen channel. Shouldn't they have known better than Satan's corrupt world?

The Legend of 'Fearless'
by Farkel inthe year was 1950. it was a wicked and lawless time in the old west.
grafitti which staked out the turf of the many rowdy gangs in town was everywhere.
this was the wild west where a mans mettle was measured by how many drinks he could consume and still maintain a lightning draw and trigger finger.

I've posted this before, but will repeat it for newcomers:
When my (20 year old, no-longer believing) daughter and I stepped for the first time onto Waikiki Beach on the Island of Oahu, we could not believe the beauty. Everything was perfect: ideal weather, scent of tropical flowers, amazing color of ocean, warm sand beneath our feet, lilting music in the background. She concluded:
"Mom, it's like the New System...only with denim and alcohol."
If someone forced me to live in the Watchtower picture of the new system, I'd miss denim and alcohol...along with South Park, dirty jokes, contact sports, and Fred Hall.

How about:
"Inside me, there is a thin woman struggling to get out...I ate her"
or
"Bad news, Rev. Roberts. God's arrived and wants to see you...she's black."

I Look Death in the Eye
by COMF ini have always had trouble breathing.
in track i was great for a quick burst of speed in the 50 yard dash, but couldn't move enough air in and out to keep myself going for the longer runs like the 330. i had sleep apnea really bad, with the classic symptoms where i stopped breathing for a while and then suddenly snorted myself awake gasping for breath.
for most of my life, surgery wasn't an option due to my jw lifestyle and employment choices (cleaning business = no insurance).

I can relate.
About 7 years ago, I came near death from e-coli poisoning. None of the excellent health-care providers had a clue why the deadly virus attacked an ovary, rather than an organ in my digestive system. I spent ten excruciating days on an antibiotic cocktail which collapsed my veins and left me looking like a herion addict. By the last day, I was reduced to tears when the IV specialist had to be called just to find a location to insert the needle.
I recall quite clearly the sudden, jerky awakening from the morphine-induced stupor which passes for sleep. Time does get distorted. I was a devoted Witness then, and would have considered it an honor to have died rather than accept a blood transfusion. Thankfully, it did not come to that extreme.
I'm most grateful we survived to find ourselves at this point. Perhaps we have both gained a perspective and an appreciation for each moment we are granted.
Cheers,
Wasa/Isa -

You just bring your bad self and you'll share Lemon Drops (TM) with no one. If the other losers don't show up, we'll hold our own "fest" and whip them in effigy.
Or...potato salad would also work.

I'm liking these Down Under folks better all the time. Time to start saving frequent flyer miles.
I'll keep the beer cold, the shorts short, and the whip in the closet...just in case.
Cheers!
