Is it possible it might have been better to refrain from using the pronoun "you" in the above quote? Just a hint - it might be a tad inflammatory.

Perhaps best to use "a nation" or "one might wonder" instead. Your use of the word personalizes the diatribe and is probably not what you meant to do.

Or I could be wrong.

Don't know where in Seattle you are, Gretchen, but all we ever got was rain with a few ice pellets mixed in. We were almost disappointed - stocked up on movies, video games and liquor, hoping to be snowed in.

Real ice storms are beautiful and deadly. I remember last January when there was a thick glaze of crystal coating trees, houses, cars. The sun came out and it was as if everything had been dipped in diamonds. I barely had time to appreciate the beauty, when branches began snapping off. I think somebody died when a tree hit their car.

I, too, had to put the book aside. It was the most arrogant approach to Christianity I have ever read.

The recurring theme: If you do not accept Christ (as narrowly defined by ME), you are without hope and devoid of any real purpose in life.

Also: God determined your individual path long before you were born and has a purpose in mind for every single human.

Using logical equations: if A and B = the only course to life, then screw you if you are a 14year old female born into a Muslim family.

I hated this book.

We had some ice pellets here earlier, but it's too warm now to do much damage.

I was passing through Portland in the 80's when I encounted a true "ice event" and it was pretty bad. We holed up in a sleazy motel and waited it out. The Gorge was impassable at the time. It's the only time I've seen Multnomah Falls completely frozen.

When conditions are right (as they were this morning) it's amazing, scary, and a thing of wonder.

i was the "bad association" for the young hero of that riveting tale.

all i could think of was the drama ending, going to lunch and sucking down a couple of muff'n'eggs followed by a danish, washed down with some shasta, and a pudding cup.

i just prayed my mom would rashion me out enough food-tickets to handle the job.

Particularly interesting to me was the last sub-heading: "Not a Choice for Christians", thus taking the "choice" of adult Christians out of the picture. In other words - more honest words - "You don't have a choice because we have already spoken."

Interestingly, my way-in-Dub-daughter does Yoga exercises daily. She doesn't seem to have a problem with it. I think the younger generation takes a lot of this stuff with a grain of salt.

If you've even given an old lady a ride in your car just so you can sit in the "elderly" seating area at the Convention.

If you've ever pretended to be pregnant just so you could go to the front of the bathroom line at a Convention.

If your floor-cleaning business fails to pay the bills and you have to move in with your parents who are living with their parents...for exactly the same reason.

If you've ever looked around at a meeting for field service and picked out the "fun" people to work with. (or, when realized there are no "fun" people out that day, you make up an imaginary "study" you have to go on alone, that "study" being a waitress at Denny's)

An End To The Quick-Build KH?

i've just been talking with a recently departed dub elder.

he tells me that the wtbts are becoming very wary of lending money for kh "quick-builds".

he says that, in the uk at least, there are brothers who act as building inspectors who have been appointed by the society to make sure that any new kh being built comes up to certain minimum standards before the society will part with any mortgaged money.. this, he says, has brought to an end the era of the quickie partly pre-fabricated kingdom hall, so beloved of the local news conscious dubbies.

I live in an area where lots of brothers, and yes even sisters, are in the construction trades.

One of the last "kick-off" meetings I went to was at the Puyallup Assembly Hall. The brother in charge introduced the committee heads - plumbing, electric, roofing, etc. The head of one of the departments was a sister who owned a business. I was blown away by his comment:

"This is not a teaching assignment, brothers...so if a sister is in charge of your department, headship goes out the window."

I thought maybe I misremembered this, but recently when talking to another person who was there, they remembered it exactly.

Although there was a brother who was technically "in charge" of accounting, I did most of the job-costing because I was the only one who had a working knowledge of the Excel spreadsheet they were using. For a brief, shining moment, I thought things might change. But Monday morning, it was back to business as usual.
