The straw that broke the camel's back
by Satans little helper inyou know, the last little thing that blew your patience out of the water and forced you to face up to the fact that you were in a cult that doesn't believe in the bible so much as it believes in it's own power structure?.
for me it was beards.
stupid i know and possibly the most trivial of things to be 'stumbled' over but to me it was the epitomy of what was wrong with the witnesses - arbitrary rules poking their noses into the lives of people where they had no business.

My wife and I had been married for a few years, and were still doing barely enough to stay in the good graces of the cult, but all the while slowly beginning to think for ourselves. We attended a district convention one summer and sat through the first day's morning session. We watched as a seemingly endless parade of people young and old, were marched across the stage as shining examples to follow, along with cheesy, canned experiences. We also got to hear about how wonderful the organization was and how happy we were.
We broke for lunch and went to the car to get the food. We got in to eat in the car because we would surely be acosted if we went back in for lunch by sister nosy about where we have been and what congregation we were going to now. We both looked at each other and without saying a word, cried profusely; we knew. We knew that we no longer believed the things were were taught since preschool. We cried out of bitterness over years wasted, and for family we dearly loved that would never speak to us again. It was just such an entirely different perspective looking at the trees from outside of the forest. It's so amazing to think that we accepted indoctrination by rote as 'bible study'. We didn't go back in for our books, and we've never been back since.
As an aside, I've recently moved to another area, and it took them almost 2 weeks find me. I tried in vain to engage them in a thought-provoking conversation at my door, and it was predictably silly. It's like talking to a doorknob. The worst part of it is that they are so smug and judgmental. I finally just had to politely end the conversation with: "You know, if you are still required to keep house-to-house records, go ahead and mark me down as a goat." My wife suggested that I should have sealed the deal by answering the door nekkid. :)
Excellent thread by the way.

RNM:
Congratulations to you both! You made it out! So few do. Regarding helping family still in the Borg, you must start the process of of getting them to think for themselves. The best way to do this is the use of questions: "Has the WTS ever been wrong about anything before?" (The only possible answer is "yes". If they answer otherwise, they are either ignorant of the facts, or choose not to see the past changes.) "Since they have been wrong before, could they be wrong about anything now?" "Have they ever changed one of the dates for Armageddon BEFORE the date passed?" "What would Jesus say about the manditory reporting of feild service time to a publishing company?".
You can't take direct issue with the WTS with an an active JW; they are highly trained to defend their faith, whether they believe or understand it themselves. It's useless to try to explain a color to someone who refuses to open their eyes. The only way to weaken the mind control grip is individual thought. Use questions skillfully. Best of luck to you, and welcome.

This one may be a bit too obscure, but see what you think. Just to make it easy, both lines are from the same movie:
"It's a trick...get an axe."
Actor 1 to actor 2:"I"ll swallow your soul!" Actor 2 to actor 1: "Come get some."

LDH: My experience is incredibly similar to yours. My wife and I were raised in the Truth(TM), and had been desensitized to the real world around us for many years. We started slowly slipping away because of the chores of living life. Gradually meeting attendance took last place. We still considered ourselves to be "good witnesses", and would never think of doubting anything we were rasied to beleive. We just weren't "doing all we could do in Jehovah's service." Then, in the summmer of 1994, we decided to get our act together and attend the district convention. Jehovah was going to be so proud of us. Although we got through Friday okay for the most part, it just didn't feel right; something was wrong, and although we really didn't talk about it, there was an uneasy feeling we had never felt before, especially not in the presence of "Jehovah's chosen people." It was not until the next day, Saturday, when we could see through the canned experiences, and the clear living of the "double-life" by those heaped with praise and applauded for there exemplary lifestyle. It was a dog-and-pony show with no substance. It was so clear now. We had been gone just long enough to come back and see everything with objective eyes. At lunch, we went out to our car and cried profusely. We were sickened both by what we had been a part of, and by the sudden realization that we had spent all of our lives up to that point in a world that didn't exist in reality. We left and never went back. I still toy with the idea of attending a Sunday meeting to remind myself what I'm NOT missing, just for sport. The problem with doing that is that since I'm not very smart, they may evoke the dormant guilt mechanisms they spent a lifetime implanting in me and suck me back in through no fault of my own. Then my wife would have to murder me in some horrific way per my instructions. She has standing orders to kill me if I become involved in any mind control cults again. I'd rather be dead than be forced to live that way again. :)

I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas." Not sure it was the absolute worst film ever made, but awful would be a polite understatement.

Actually had to make that decision for myself a few years ago. I was facing brain surgery when my JW father stepped up and and boldly informed my surgeon that there would be no blood transfusions. I was 30 at the time. The surgeon said: "well okay, if that's your wish, I'll honor it. But you should know that you have an artery as big as my thumb near the area I'll be cutting. If I accidentally knick it, there's a good chance you will bleed to death." After some very objective research and serious soul-searching, I was able to secretly get the 8x10 "no blood" decal removed from the outside of my medical file without my family knowing about it. Just to be sure, I made my best friend, who is an attorney, responsible for my healthcare decisions, and had the Advanced Directive form removed from my chart as well. In the surgery prep area I was acosted by an incredibly zealous JW scrub nurse who said she had seen my "no blood" forms, and by golly, she was on my side and was going to make sure I didn't get any of that evil stuff. Like a trooper, my pal stepped up and took care if it before she could finish her sentence as I was being wheeled off. I never had to say a word, and I never had to disappoint my family with the news of reversing my decision. Everything went fine, and no transfusion was necessary, but that is such a hard decision to make after a lifetime of indoctrination. I just couldn't believe that the God I serve would value blood more than the life it could save.
