There was a group out in California, 20 or so years ago called 'Christain Prophets of Jehovah' that used to picket the Cow Palace. My mother in law was one of 'um. I didn't think much of it. She was quite delusional and paronoid.

Angie, thanks for the post, I remember reading many of these things a couple years ago when I first went online and have enjoyed reading these again, despite the small font size. I wondered about the NWT of Rom.14:7-9 for years because it defied common sense.

Setting: 1960's east Palo Alto, Ca.(Outer limits theme in background) Fear that my all my relatives and beloved grandparents were all going to die like in the pic in the Paradise lost book. Fear of my abusive alcoholic step-father coming home in the middle of the nite. Frequent physical attacks daily for being the only white boy( jw at that!) in an all black school. Being mocked at the door by the same students in field service. Fear of prejudiced adults sicking their dogs on you. Fear of the Black Panthers in your midst. Fear of the Zodiac killer. Fearful sights of the war in 'Nam on TV each night. Fear of the Congregation Overseer who intimidated me. The fear seeing older brothers I knew being reprimanded for sins such as wearing a mustache. My first talk in the main hall against my will at 8 years old .Fear that Jehovah will kill me for succumbing to that piece of birthday cake at school and being jealous of the christmas presents the other kids got. 'cause Armaggedons' right around the corner. Wishing an Alien would wisk me away in time .

WHY DO JW'S USE MORE OLD TESTAMENT THAN NEW?
by minimus inevery book that is published, every magazine written ,highlights the hebrew scriptures as opposed to the greek.do you think it's because most christians stress christ's words and jw's need to be different?

Very simple, the majority of the NT writings are not applicable to the great crowd according to JW theology. (Remember they were writtin for THEIR instruction) It is up to the ruling party to decide which scriptures pertain to great crowd and the potential converts. That is why the pet scriptures are reiterated so much in the pubications. There's countless scriptures that you just will not see because they conflict with current dogma. As a diversion the writing dept. has been good about creating all those antitypical parallels from the OT that Jesus and the apostles just couldn't figure out for themselves or forgot to tell us 8&> Gal. 1:8,9 says it all.

I liked this little gem on page 291
" Will Great Britain and America become Fascist under the dominating control of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy? The Scriptures and the facts appear to fully support that conclusion."

Why did the society shut down it's radio station?
by voltaire inon an earlier thread about the wt's tv commercials i said that the society used the media before, more specifically i reffered to their radio station.
it seems to me that they quit using it because they were pressured to.
i remeber reading something, somewhere about the provacative, imflamatory nature of rutherford's remarks being the principal factor.

Voltaire, I looked up the info from the Divine Purpose publication, circa 1958. It gives the Society's version of events. It stated beginning on page 120 that " the radio station WBBS began on February 24, 1924, the president of the Society inaugurated this station by delivering an important lecture entitled "Radio and Divine Prophecy". Live broadcasts of Rutherfords' lectures called "The Watch Tower Hour" with introductory and concluding music furnished by an orchestra maintained by the Society began November 18, 1928 and they continued through 1930. "For more than 3 decades it broadcast as a noncommercial, educational station throughout the entire New York metropolitan area and the neighboring states of Connecticut and New Jersey".The live broadcasts were surplanted in 1931 with what was called "transcribed lectures" on records because the live broadcasts prevented Rutherford from traveling and organizing conventions according to page 122. These 15 minute talks allowed the society to rent telephone lines by the hundreds for simultaneous broadcasts over hundreds of radio stations. This was called the "wax chain". In 1932 this "wax chain" had expanded to more than 340 stations. Rutherfords' attacks particularly against Roman Catholics created public backlash and the demand to take Rutherford off the airwaves. In 1934 the Society began using colporteurs in the use of using phonographs both from cars and at the doors subjecting the neighbors to these prerecorded "lectures".The Society stated it was very successful .On page 138 it says on October 31,1937 the Society withdrew from the airwaves but prior Rutherford spoke on nationwide radio on the concluding day at an assembly in 1937 that the broadcasts were ending and that it was because of a 10 year boycott and intimidation that had been practiced by the Roman Catholic Hierarchy and other clergmen.
Hope this helps. I had to sift thru many pages on the subject reading Tom and Johns' supposed conversation &>:(

Airwalk, it's been 18 years since I last attended at the Cowpalace(or in Ca. for that matter). I'm sure it hasn't changed much. I hated the traffic, especially after driving(crawling) 50 miles down the bayshore freeway.
Amazing, your reference to the 1971 Kezar assembly brought back some memories. Bad ones! Those were the worst seats I ever sat on. My wifes' father was in the orchestra too.

my notes from letter read at service meeting
by DB inat tonight's service meeting, a letter was read concerning child molestation and the society's policy.. to preface, i jotted down notes in the form of a brief outline.
also, the elder reading it said that the letter is primarily directed to jws for the purpose of answering questions that we may encounter.. here's my outline:.
god's people are happy, in stark contrast to this world.. one reason is that we respect bible's view of sexual matters.. we abhor child abuse.. we will not protect abusers, or sheild them from the consequences of their wicked acts.. we expect elders to investigate every case (report) of child abuse.. but, we congregation follows bible stipulation that there must be two or three witnesses to establish a matter.. no congregation privilages extended to known child molesters.. elders are instructed to report abuse when required by state law.. people have the "absolute right" (my quotation marks for emphasis and to underscore that it is a quote from the letter) to report child abuse to the authorities.. since 1981 several articles published dealing with with matter in wt and awake.. when circumstances made the need clear, we have strengthened our policy over the years.. we feel that our bible-based policy is strong.. some additional notes: there were several scriptures cited and read, i did not jot them down.. well, i did note 1 tim 5:19 and 24. these verses were read after the comment abuout the need for two witnesses.

I too just came back from hearing the letter read at the service meeting. What stuck out in my mind was there was no obvious change in policy. The statement was made that the elders did not discourage the victim from going to the police.(when does a 6 year old do that?)
There was NO mention at all regarding the parents or others in the congregation having a moral or legal responsibility to go to the authorities with allegations of abuse. Non whatsoever. The elder giving the concluding prayer referring to the allegations in the media used the trigger words 'Gods enemies' 'lying accusations' and prayed for those 'contaminated' by watching the show for having any lingering doubts to be strenghened and to avoid listening to future utterances from the froglike expressions found in revelation.

why is a kingdom hall called a kingdom hall
by orangefatcat ini have always tried to figure out for years what is the reasoning behind the name kingdom hall, any thoughts on this?

This change signified Rutherfords' perception of the church or congregation of god. With the recent reinterpretation of the identity of the great crowd in Rev.7 it seemed to Rutherford inappropriate to call the house of worship 'the church' any longer since the future coverts weren't even called christians at the time, but jonadabs.
Just my thoughts.
