Right, misread their site....they want you to join some kind of 'club' that DOES cost money to download the software. The two options are "Yes, let me join the club" or "I'm already a member or plan to join soon".
So, if I felt like being dishonest, I certainly COULD download it for free, but....
(well, no 'but' really, I mean, I had no problem with napster, so...)
going to www.cheapbytes.com and buying cds with it on it for like 5 bucks
Never even heard of them before...looking around. Hmmm....only has version 7.x available.
if you don't wanna download off your 56k.
Don't WANNA?? C'mon - 3 CDs?? That'd take, like, ALL WEEK...(well, 111 hours, actually).
EDIT: IOW, if I decide to give it another try, I think the version 8.0 of Mandrake I already have will do fine, thank you very much...

an email i received today.... since the pledge of allegiance and the lord's prayer are not allowed in most public schools anymore because the word "god" is mentioned..... a kid in arizona wrote the attached.
school.
now i sit me down in school.
Sorry, misquoted, wasn't the original poster who said the above....
I think if theres going to be rules they should apply equally
Anyway, my point is...yes, there are obviously rules. YES, they are applied equally by the administration as a whole.
If individuals teachers or VPs are creating problems, attacking the system (IE., 'taking god out of school is the cause of so many problems') is the wrong approach.

The school this girl went to allowed marilyn manson and eminem but not her shirt. I am not trying to say theres some big conspiracy
What I'M saying is, that if you whipped out her school handbook, I'd be REAL surprised to learn that shirts with profanity on them are allowed but religious texts are not. Note that there is nothing wrong with just having a Marilyn Manson or Eminem shirt - the point of the original poster is:
kids are wearing marilyn manson shirts and blood and gore and anything else they want, yet she wasnt allowed to wear her shirt
What I'm saying is that, I'd bet that, according to her school handbook, that statement is patently false.
In order for it to be true, obviously, the ONLY clothing 'banned' would be religious clothing - there could not be a restriction or 'ban' on ANY other kind of clothing.
In fact, I've got a paypal account. Bet you $20. You don't even have to use her school handbook - find me ANY contemporary, US, public school handbook that bans religious texts exclusively.

Just checked their site (would have saved me a lot of time if you had linked to it in your post )
Anyway, yeah, I looked around. Unfortunately, of the half dozen games I play on a regular basis, none have a 'compatibility rating' (?IIRC?) of more than '2' out of 5, so....maybe someday....
Looks like Mandrake 8.2 is being charged for, though (kinda defeats the purpose of the whole 'free' thing). And, in any case, I'm stuck on 56K, so downloading that does NOT look fun...

i've decided to join the modern era and have purchased a hp with a 1.2 ghz processor.
works a bit faster than the 166 mhz i was using before.
i'm a bit disturbed by my own consumerism though.. yerusalyim.
I'd be suspicious of a case AND PS for $30
Hey, that's what the ad said. And, yeah, I'd be a little suspicious of that, too. Myself, I'm running an Antec 350W.
I just priced out a new system
I've built a bunch, and I'm sure a few others on the board have...mind posting the specs you're looking at?
wont get one till the new thunderbird
You mean thoroughbread? The thunderbirds are the old 'Athlon' chips - the XPs, MPs, 4s, and Duron 1Ghz+ chips are all 'Palomino'.
I wouldn't do it for less than $45/hr myself
Well, unless you have a list of certifications as long as your arm, no one up here will pay you that. Tech-savvy people are a dime a dozen in my area.

dont' bash it till you try it
I HAVE tried it, actually. Actually ran a Linux server on my LAN for a wee bit a while back.
With WineX you can play virtually any windows game in Linux at the same speed
LOL! I realize this is hardly a mark in favor of Windows, but if game developers can't get their games to work properly on an MS OS running DirectX, I have serious reservations about the game running under Linux...
In any case, I understand it only emulates up to DirectX 7...all of the games I play on a regular basis right now require DX8.
(Although, honestly, if it DOES work....hmmmmm...I may have to re-install Linux....I have the Mandrake 8.0 installation sitting on the shelf behind me....)

i am thinking of getting a new computer.
i have an hp pc right now and thinking of switching to mac.
i saw the i-mac and fell in love with it --- its bucks but it does a ton of stuff.
It will also mean throwing out all of your current software.
There is, of course, the option of networking the two, but....uhhh....why get an iMac? Just aesthetics? If so, you can easily find PC LCDs. The 'bubble' case is a little odd, but there are some pretty spiffy PC cases, too. The 'beige box' that used to mean 'PC' is rather passe nowadays.

newer xp's won't do MP without modification i've heard...but the old ones work perfectly though
Hmmm...it was the older ones I had heard the stories about. Dunno....maybe Tyan just makes good boards...
Also, my workstation also functions as a server...I have 116 processes running right now
Ahh, see, no point in running mine as a server. Only 3 PCs on my home LAN, so peer-to-peer is fine, and I don't have a decent enough net connection to have a web server running on it.
no decent apps for linux
Sorry, I'm going to stand by that...I've worked w/ various Linux 'office apps', and just don't like them as much as Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Access. Needless to say, if you're any kind of gamer, Linux is right out (unless you only play Quake). And, last I checked, none of the excellent Adobe graphics programs worked on Linux, either. And telecommunications software? Forget about it!
All our server-related stuff beats the crap out of microsoft products
Well, I can't disagree with that. I don't do much server-side stuff, though. What I *DO* do on servers uses MS-SQL and propriety call processing software for a telecommunications package. Both, obviously, require a Windows OS.
Windows is a joke of an OS
Depends a lot on the version. WinXP and Win2K are both very, VERY good operating systems.
If I don't like something, I can change it.
*shrug* - well, if that's important to you....you do OS-level stuff, so I assume it is. For those of us who don't, Windows IS a better choice.

I'm sure I'd charge someone at least $20/hr for work on their PC. It would take about 2 hours to assemble and properly test that box. So, tack on $40 to the price.
You may rest assured Best Buy does not pay its computer assemblers $20/hr.
As to warranty? Pffft...who needs it? Look at the price on those components....by the time one breaks, it will be considerably cheaper to just buy a new one. Plus, you'd probably want to get the upgraded one ANYWAY...
(and, in any case, like I said, these are RETAIL prices - you are still buying the components from RETAIL shops - ask them about THEIR warranties - almost all the parts come with decent warranties.)
