Elder's Manual Here
by Simon insome may find this useful, it's quite interesting and, if nothing else, really annoys the elders that you can read it.... url: http://home2.inet.tele.dk/carloc/index.htm

Let me weigh in with the Old Hippie from another country. There has never been any effort to accumulate any kind of information on disfellowshipped ones at all. In the countries where it's allowed the notes, etc. from the judicial hearing are kept in a sealed file and that's it. This other stuff is just paranoia.

larc you and I are a whole lot closer in experience than I realized. Addressing your questions.
In my area only a very limited number pursued higher educaction of any kind. There were quite a few Witnesses that had some education and we had a couple of COs that had degrees and I think that made a difference. I'm pleased to say that's not the case now, at least in my area. I think you're looking at something around 40% are doing something beyond high school, maybe 25% going for at least a Bachelor's. I consider that very encouraging since the US average is about 30% going to college. The dreaded home schooling thing hasn't taken hold here like it has in some areas either.
Yes, I think it is harder for women.
"One thing I am not clear on. What is your status today regarding the Witness culture. Are you in, out, or in between?"
What a good question. Not one that I have a can definitively answer because I don't define myself in those terms. I'm a Christian, I think the basic doctrine as espoused by Witnesses is pretty sound, I think all explanation of prophecy is speculative and that biblical chronology is almost indeciperable in most cases, some of the base dates are probably wrong, maybe by as much as two hundred years, I believe in conduct that is simply and clearly defined by the scriptures not that which is extrapolated or interpolated, I think people should mind their own business, I believe that a public ministry is a necessity for Christians but that it must be in balance with all other aspects of the Christian personality, etc. I could go on for a few pages probably. So I don't really know how to answer your question other than to say I feel personally answerable to God and that the names of organizations doesn't have much to do with that. Not a very good answer I'm afraid and the grammar is horrible but I don't have time to fix it.

ISP usually I like your stuff but you're being a little too clever here with the way you are cutting off your quotes, especially the one on search warrants. What don't you include the rest of it?

COJs books are certainly meaty. It would take considerable research to verify every thing he says. I've got the newer version of "Gentile Times" I'd like to see the one of the older ones because he apparently addresses "The Lies of Ptolemy" in that one.
I think "In Search of Christian Freedom" needs a good editor, too wordy.
For my money, Penton's "Apocalypse Delayed" is the best of the lot.
Reed and Rhodes are a waste of time and money. Haven't read Morley.

One comment to larc in particular. If you think this board, or others like it, is in any way a representative sample of JWs you're making an enormous leap of faith. This is a very small subset, a vocal group of ex or marginal Witnesses with negative experiences that they are prepared to continually revisit for some purpose not very clear to me, some kind of catharsis I guess. The number, compared to the numbers of Witnesses as a whole, is statistically not that significant. By the way, I am not denying that these negative experiences are real though I think some things look worse in retrospect and to be fair some things look better.

If you guys want to be locked into your cherished paradigms just go ahead, it doesn't bother me. I do find it amusing that any negative assertion is pretty much taken as Gospel while anything that doesn't fall in with the herd mentality is immediately suspect. What I've said is true, whether you believe it or not is a matter of absolute indifference to me.
On reflection, I do have to admit one elder did say something to me about the "creature worship" deal with the Junior Princess. I told him when we stopped bowing down to COs, kissing the rings of DOs and prostrating ourselves before Bethel Brothers then it would be time to talk about "creature worship." That's when he told me about some honor he had to forgo when he was in school because his parents didn't want any part of wordly prominence, and that was the end of that discussion.
Most Elders are very much aware that stuff like that particular Watchtower comment are ignored.
What most of you don't seem to grasp is that unless you do something that is actionable judicially, there's not a whole lot anyone can do about your activities other than shoot their mouth off a little bit. I've never cared a whole lot what anyone else thought so it hasn't bothered me.

I'm happy to report that last year in our local high school the Junior Princess was a Witness and the fastest middle distance runner they have is a Witness. No one said a thing.

Silentlambs--ELDER LIABILITY ALERT!!!
by Investigator inwts attorney--morenowhos screwed?!?.
the legal liabilities are rapidly mounting for congregation elders & kingdom hall properties.
this will involve all legal matters especially pedophile cases.

I think you nailed it ISP. I believe it would be difficult to establish that Elders had a legal obligation to make an announcement to the congregation giving the specifics of such a matter. In fact, you can get into legal trouble making such an announcement if you're not very careful. I know of a church in Oklahoma that was bankrupted in a case like that.

I'm familiar with the quote from the Watchtower, but I also know, at least in my experience, that most people don't pay a shred of attention to that kind of stuff.
