The town motto is "Keep Austin Weird" so that ought to tell you something about it. It also calls itself "The Live Music Capitol of the World" so needless to say there are a lot of live music venues and festivals going on all the time. It's in the hill country and has a lake downtown and several others nearby, meaning lots of watersports and hiking to do. Extremely liberal fun town the only thing not to love about it are the toll roads they just put in and some of the yanks that immigrate there.

We aren't the best? Thanks for destroying another ideal Six.
I don't really see the need to compare to other countries so I won't address that. What I do know is the we have crappy health care, to many underage mothers and a society which instills no personal accountability for any of our actions. That IMO contributes to the infant mortality in the US. What do do about it? Education, better health care and people having to take responsiblity for their own actions. Not likely to happen though. Not soon anyway.

I agree with DJK.
It's understandable you want to share with him what you are learning and hope that ya'll can leave the dubs together but try and remember this is something he has believed for a very long time...it's his FAITH. Don't expect to change it, well not quickly anyway, this stuff in ingrained. IMO just continue to grow and learn yourself and keep the lines of communcation open and hope something will get thru to him eventually.

Looks to me like Odrade got the point of the thread pretty well.
While it's a valid warning it's ironic who started it. Maybe some introspection is in order.

Are there a minimum set of core beliefs that all Christians accept?
by nicolaou infor example, a christian could not simply believe that jesus was a compassionate man could he?
christ must be accepted as being divine either as part of a trinity or at least as the son of god.. must a christian believe that the miracles of jesus as recorded in the bible are actual events or can they be accepted as allegory?must a christian believe that "all scripture is inspired of god"?jesus is said to separate the sheep from the goats - can you be a christian without accepting that jesus will kill all the goats?there seems to be so much about christ that many christians are simply too uncomfortable to discuss.
why?

Christian is a broad term. You might try narrowing it down to a specific religion within christainity to start.

I've told my daughter that no one knows for sure if there is or isn't a god but a lot of people have different belief systems based on their own faith and experiences. If it makes them feel better about their lives then who am I to question it? Bottom line respect other people's beliefs but don't allow them to dictate what you should or shouldn't believe, figure that out for yourself.
We have been to several different churchs, attending here on the island regularly, and she has been involved in a Jewish household, we discuss non christian beliefs and wouldn't mind attending services when and if we come across them. She attended some christian after school meetings, enjoyed them but didn't feel the need to become a christian herself. IMO experience is the best teacher.

Moderate Christians. How is it I love and despair of them at the same time?
by nicolaou inrecent exchanges with mouthy and renee on the forum and via pm have only reinforced my view that the majority of sincere christians are good, kind and loving human beings.
it's because i'm drawn to compassionate people that i also want to share with them the powerful and refreshing atheist outlook i've discovered over the past few years.
(goodness!

As long as you feel the need to "save" them then no you can't have just a dialog with them.

by Elsewhere ini was walking to my car after work, it was very cold (low 40's f) and getting dark and a beggar woman walks up to me sobbing and crying about being cold.
she didn't want to go through another very cold night light last night (low 30's f) and she needed money to get into a local shelter.

I'm not really blonde. I figured I better post it before my hairdresser did to protect her business as I was going around pretending to be a natural blonde. Then someone would have to call her to verify and who knows where that might lead.....ya'll might find out my real nail color as well.
