  a theory about parents/parenthood

  personally, i know of several cases -- and have heard of many more -- of grown children not getting along with their parents.

  some of these cases that i know about have nothing to do with the jw experience.

  these people -- parents and their children -- go years without speaking (although sometimes living in the same town) and actually see each other even less.

  There are some folks who are just too toxic to be in our lives whether they are related to us by blood or they are our children or not.

  There are many people who have major problems and they are someone's child. The sociopaths of this world are someone's children. There are many factors involved in relationships with adult children and their parents and sometimes the parents may have done a really bad job of raising that child into adulthood. Maybe there was even abuse present whether it be verbal, emotional, physical, psychological or sexual or any combination thereof.

  But then again, maybe not. There are many very screwed up adults who are messing up the lives of others constantly and there are many in jails and prisons who were raised in a very loving, decent family situation. Those adult children may even have siblings who turned out just fine.

  Are the parents to blame for the manifestations of the problems of their adult children? It isn't as black and white as yes or no. Depends on many things.

  In your case LB- I don't blame you one bit. Take the emotional vampire out of your life.

  i was to meet them thursday near williams, arizona, for lunch.

  they called because plans had to change and they couldnt make it.

  Atkins - good or bad?

  i keep hearing good and bad about the atkins diet.

  i started it a month ago not really to lose weight, but, i had heard that atkins eliminates sluggishness during the day and insomnia at night.

  what was startling was the amount of energy i gained.

  I went on the Atkins Diet about 3 years ago and lost 52 pounds and have kept it off ever since. I restrict my intake of carbs on a daily basis now but I've been doing it for long enough that it's a way of eating for me now.

  I have a friend who went on the diet and had no success with it at all. She didn't like the way it made her feel within the first week. It actually made her feel sick. I think the reason it works for some and not others is that some folks don't have as much of a problem with carbs as others do. Obviously that was a problem for me and I now watch my carb intake.

  One good thing about this diet is that if it works for you, it works well and it works quickly. The weight comes off rapidly and that spurred me on to continue forward. But it is not for everyone.

  STAR- YOU GO GIRL!!!! BTW- your hard work has paid off!----You look BEAUTIFUL !!!!

  today i received a big heavy box from the mail lady.

  it was a box of gifts for my whole family from xenawarrior.

  i was so surprized at her generositity, the kids were so excited and they loved everything.

  Holiday Traditions

  every year since i was young, we got to open one gift on christmas eve.

  when i was little i used to get excited wondering what it would be.

  it took me many years to figure out that it would always be pajamas.

  These stories were wonderful to read tonite!!

  I have celebrated Christmas all my life and for my family it is about togetherness. The whole fam damily gets together every year and there is a great deal of kibitzing card playing, joke playing and laughter. Yeah, there are a large number of gifts exchanged but that's always for the children. To watch them throughout that whole process from seeing them eye up the shiny (yes Gently, it's about shiny ) packages under the tree to watching their patience being tested to seeing their faces when they get that one item they wanted so badly is a wonderful thing.

  One of my fondest memories is from when I was very young. My dad's brother lived with us and was probably 20 at the time and my dad was probably 25. I remember sneaking out (I'm about 4-5) and seeing them wrapping gifts in the living room. My dad and his brother, mere kids themselves were playing with all the toys and having alot of fun. There was one of those old metal tops that you'd pump up and down to rev it up and evidently that toy never saw it's intended recipient because those "boys" had wound it up so tight so many times that they broke it.

  Thing is that I can see my mom through all of this- laughing and enjoying it all herself.

  Thanks for triggering this memory for me again tonite with your post meadow!!!

  Before We Leave, Just Want To Say

  katie and i are about to head out to the airport, and by 3 pm tomorrow afternoon will be happy husband and wonderful wife!

  we would almost certainly never have met each other if not for this forum, where we have both laughed and cried and healed, with and through all of you friends.

  Paid for insurance, but insurance is canceled

  i know this is off topic... but i'm p!$$ed right now and need to vent.. i got a letter from my dentist saying that i had to pay almost $200 for some work that was recently done.

  the reason stated is that my insurance (health and dental) has been canceled.

  i called the insurance company and they confirmed it - my insurance is canceled - but they could not give me a reason why and told me to call the company that is providing my insurance.. .

  You'll have to check your state's laws regarding health insurance. Try this:

  I cannot imagine that they would be able to cancel your insurance without written notification stating the reason and refunding any premiums paid. If you are paying for your own premiums, you are likely paying for a month ahead.

  If you find that you do not get satisfaction when eventually speaking with someone from the insurance carrier's office- you might want to get in touch with the Insurance Commissioner for the State of TX:

  Their function is to be sure that insurance carriers are in compliance with state and federal law and to investigate complaints.

  Try not to think about it right now because there isn't anything you can even dig into about it until the holiday is over.

  Martha Stewart's Apple Pie:

  First you start with some apple seeds and you plant them in the ground. You must tend to the tree daily by fertilizing it with your own special mixture you made......

  after about 6 years you have apples you can go out and pick for your pie....

  using the pie tin you've forged out of old tin cans from your kitchen......
