Why weren't (aren't) we appalled that God required a human sacrifice?
by True North inapologists for the genocidal behavior written of in the old testament have often stated that its victims simply got what they deserved, and that they deserved it in part because their unclean religious practices included human sacrifice, even the sacrifice of their own children.
christians have long prided themselves in comparison to many pagan religions in that christian religious practice has never included human sacrifice and that christian principles would make one abhor such practices.
so why did we (do we) so readily accept the concept that the christian god would require a human sacrifice -- of his own son, yet -- before he would allow himself to be propitiated?

I'm on holiday in the UK and so I don't have my books at the moment, but human and child sacrifice was a feature of worship of certain Canaanite deities, especially the agricultural god Dagan and the underworld deity Malik/Milku/Moloch. Dagan only required the sacrifice of human cadavers, people already dead (the so-called "pagram" sacrifice), but the cult of Malik involved the sacrifice of living children and slaves. Malik was the "eternal king" of Sheol, the king of the dead Rephaim kings, and who apparently was identical with Rapiu/Rapha, the eponymous ancestor of the Rephaim. In Judah, the Valley of Hinnom was the locale of Ahab's sacrifice to Moloch, which in Joshua 15:8, 18:16; 2 Samuel 5:18; 1 Chronicles 11:15, 20:4 is associated with the Valley of the Rephaim, and which is paralleled by the "valleys of Sheol" in Proverbs 9:18 where the Rephaim reside. The later Jewish and Christian notion of Gehenna is certainly connected with this earlier notion of valleys of the Rephaim in Sheol. It is easy to say what happened, but your notion is "WHY" and that is much harder to understand from ancient sources. It was believed that Rapiu and the Rephaim bless the current kings in power, and perhaps the sacrifice was meant to satisfy them. There is also the ambiguous relationship between Malik/Rapiu with Resheph and Mot. Are all three the same deity or are they different gods in different cults? Mot however is represented in the OT and in Canaanite literature as insatiable, always hungry, desiring to eat the souls of the living, and perhaps the sacrifice was done in times of stress to halt some pestilence or famine. I know Mark Baker has a detailed discussion of the evidence pertaining to the mlk-sacrifice. Also see my post on Rapiu and the Rephaim:

What's the latest on Passover?
by Justin inno, not the memorial.
i'm talking about the jewish passover.
during the periods of the first and second temples, it was necessary to have the lambs slaughtered as sacrifices at the temple.

No, I did not connect it with barley harvesting....is Unleavened Bread made from barley? If it is, then I stand corrected....I was thinking in terms of the planting of wheat in spring....which from what I've read on Passover is what is relevant, the planting of wheat, and not the harvest of barley. There is a planting of wheat sown in the fall that is harvested in the late spring (i.e. Shavuot) and a planting of wheat in the spring that is harvested in the late summer of early fall. There is no harvest of wheat at the time of Passover...Resheph is appeased to ensure the good health of the young, and they are most vulnerable when they are born, in their first few months, and not at a time later in the year. And Resheph is not a "pagan" notion but a native Israelite one.

Passover apparently became Temple-centered during Second Temple times and previously was an agricultural festival celebrated locally. It was not a harvest festival (that's in fall). Instead Passover itself is thought to have celebrated the birthing of livestock and the Feast of Unleavened Bread celebrated the planting of crops. The sacrifice of the lamb was to appease Resheph, the god of pestilence, who would otherwise claim the firstlings. Resheph extrudes into the Exodus story as the Destroyer killing the firstborn. I don't have material handy (I'm at an internet cafe), but that is the theory. I thought the conflation of the Exodus story and the passover festival was pre-exilic, but I'm not sure....

So, how did a nice young ex-JW lady like yourself become such a hardcore fan girl and meet all these fascinating people?
Pretty much knowing one person leading to another and so forth (my s/o is a techie). It's a lame answer, I know, but that's how it happens. Last month I had dinner with the real "inventor of the internet" (no joke) and he had just seen the Passion and started talking about it and then I got going about the Bible and he was genuinely fascinated and had like a million questions for me... ;) And then he had dinner with us again the next week and this time it was at my home, and so I was able to bust out all my books and show him this 'n that....it was fun, especially since I never had the opportunity to talk all this great stuff in person...

Apostate bastards know more about bible/god history than others.
by gumby inhow many religious people have done a critical examination on the bible/god/religion......more than an ex-dub has?
the mormons possibly.. one only has to read some of the over 1 million posts on this board, to notice how much re-search various ones have done on these subjects after leaving the dubs.
why do you suppose that is?.

Not me. Bible researching became an enjoyable pursuit for me as a dub preteen; in 7th grade I was known throughout my grade as the one "writing my own Bible," actually I was writing a commentary on Genesis. Of course, at the time I believed Enoch and Noah were real people, but still it was an interest that I always find pleasant and enjoyable. I think I read the Aid book cover to cover two or three times by the end of 8th grade.
Growing up, I didn't give the FD&S/GB authority structure much thought....it was all about Bible beliefs and loving Jehovah, only when I turned 13 or so was it really bludgeoned into me what obeisance we are supposed to do on behalf of the Society. But, having never baptised, I never made a dedication to the Organization, got tired of all the talks being about the Organization instead of God, and just went to college and left them all for good, without having bitter feelings of it all....i was just glad to be out.

Great pic. I'm jealous you got to go there - big SW fan since I was a young thing.
I went there just after Phantom Menace premiered. It is supposedly hidden away in a secret location in Marin County, except it is on Lucas Freaking Valley Road....however, supposedly it was already named that before George moved in. It's about halfway up on the righthand side at a nondescript gate, that they gotta then buzz you in, then you drive quite a way in to a checkpoint where they then have to phone whoever invited you to confirm you are a guest. Then you drive a little way until you see the big white ranch house and all the adjoining red brick buildings. Dennie showed me their tiny little sound foley studio with tons of different kinds of shoes and surfaces and a bathtub, etc. It's all old fashioned radio theatre sound stuff. Here is the webpage on Dennie and what they do:
http://www.starwars.com/episode-i/feature/19990622/
You can also see her in the Jurassic Park DVD Special Features. I then got to see various modeling and art departments, and in the ranch house there is a magnificent library that is chock full of books on fashion, wardrobe, etc. and people were in there designing clothes for some movie....It was all pretty kewl. Seeing the light sabers, the ATATs, Luke Skywalker's mechanical hand, and especially all the awesome Indiana Jones stuff was my highlight.
