So, you may justify many absurdities by using the Old Testament as the Word of God
.
And, yet, the Apostle Paul held up the OT as worthy of respect by saying "all scripture [the Old Testament] is inspired and beneficial". Not that I believe the NT either, but this scripture is used as a basis by JWs (who, incidentally believe the "all scripture is inspired" reference means the entire Bible is inspired) for basing Christian beliefs on.

For those in the Watchtower who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible
by opusdei1972 inthe watchtower says:.
9 while most major books of religion say very little, if anything, about god, the bible acquaints us with jehovah god and his activities.
it helps us to see the many facets of his personality.

I simply don't believe that every word of God is in the Bible
Then how do you choose what parts to believe?
If Jesus was not infallible, then that undermines the core concept of the entire Ransom concept, does it not? If the Ransom is in doubt, then a Christian is wasting their time being a Christian.
If I read a book, any book, knowing up front that 50%, 75% or more is a lie, inaccurate, or nonsense, and I don't know (or can't know) what is true or not, is it worth reading at all? No.

convinced 95% of all active jw's don't have a clue as to where 1914 originates
by goingthruthemotions inso talking with my wife last night...i was explaining to her about a conversation i had with a person at work about end times.
he has a strange belief that some scriptures in isaiah perdict something huge is going to happen in september of 2015. she then states that no one can predict the future only the father knows and he is in a cult.
lol on the inside.. i then stated "what about 1914 and the dubs perdiction and what it means today" she said no there was never any predictions.

99.9% of JWs also are completely oblivious to the fact that the 1914 date and its chronology wasn't even invented by Russell. At best, he plagarized the entire concept from the Adventists and William Miller and stapled the WT label on it.

"In the coming 26 years [1914/1915] , all present governments will be overthrown and dissolved." (C.T. Russell, Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 2, p. 98-99, 1889)
"In view of this strong Bible evidence concerning the Times of the Gentiles, we consider it an established truth that the final end of the kingdoms of this world, and the full establishment of the kingdom of God, will be accomplished by the end of A.D. 1914." (The Time Is At Hand, 1902 edition, p. 99)
"We see no reason for changing the figures--nor could we change them if we would. They are, we believe, God's dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble. We see no reason for changing from our opinion expressed in the view presented in the Watch Tower of January 15, '92. We advise that it be read again."
--Watchtower 7/15/1894, p.1677So it was in this harvest also up to A.D. 1878 the time prophecies and the fact of the Lord's presence.... but the same fact and scriptures, teaching the same time and presence, stand unchallenged and incontrovertible. (The Time Is At Hand; 1889; 1915 ed.; p. 236)
"We have no doubt whatever in regard to the chronology relating to the dates of 1874, 1914, 1918, and 1925..." W 5-15-1922
"This chronology is not of man, but of God. Being of divine origin and divinely corroborated, present-truth chronology stands in a class by itself, absolutely and unqualifiedly correct...." (Watchtower, July 15, 1922 p. 217)
.
After 40 decades of wolfing about 1914 and a 100% failure of all that WT said would transpire in that year, it waffled with this astonishing statement:
"We did not say positively that this would be the year."
--Watchtower 11/1/1914, p.5565.
The plain truth of the matter is most JWs know nothing of their religion or the basis for their beliefs because they don't have to. As a JW, your only job is to obey the GB and believe what they tell you to believe. Why study? If a JW discovers evidence that contradicts what the GB teaches, they have no freedom to dissent or question it.

P.S.
There isn't any "good" advice found in the Bible that didn't already exist in other cultures long before the Bible was written. There is nothing unique to the alleged positive advice in it. Many already had it figured out before god supposedly decided to chime in on human affairs.

OEJ: I suspect you know the answer you'll get from the athiests on the forum, so I'll skip that part.
.
Instead of targeting atheists, why not just consider anyone with at least two functioning brain cells? One does not need to be an atheist to know the smell of bulls**t.
The bible has some good advice as well as some great examples showing how far humankind has come over the years.
How? Christians are living off rules that were invented 2,000 years ago; OT supporters (like Muslims) haven't progressed beyond 3,000 year-old nonsense. It is the secular world that progresses, not the Biblical/religious world.
To your point, while the secular world had established the earth is a sphere, the Catholic Church took a few hundred more years to catch up with facts. Hell, some Fundamentalist Muslims still believe the earth is flat...because the Koran says so. Evidence holds no sway with the religiously ignorant.

9 While most major books of religion say very little, if anything, about God, the Bible acquaints us with Jehovah God and his activities. It helps us to see the many facets of his personality. The Bible reveals God not only as an all-powerful, wise, and just God but also as a God who loves us. (Read John 3:16; 1 John 4:19.).... (w12 6/15 pp. 25-29, paragraph 9)
.
Actions always speak louder than words. "The Bible says..." a lot of things about god's alleged wonderful qualities, but taken at face value, the stories in the Bible reveal that god is a dick.
"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it, a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." - Richard Dawkins
