  law school is obviously not the hardest program to follow.

  it isn't something that can be replicated on the internet.

  a first year student can find the law.

  I always laugh when people expect to be paid well for their study and hard work.

  I work in what I consider one of the most important of the helping professions, teaching. You know, help form future generations, make a difference in the lives of many children, teach profound lessons that will stick with students for life, etc.

  Turns out society doesn't think that's worth much at all, well monetarily anyhow. "Teachers should teach for nobler reasons than just money!" That's what the local taxpayers say, as well as, of course, the local budget committee.

  Religion VS Atheism and the decline of ethics and morals

  being back in college after leaving the borg, one of the required classes for a degree at my college is ethics.

  after learning a few things, i am curious where morality and ethics is heading for the future of humanity.

  i wish i could find the source again, but several weeks ago i recalled reading a transcript of a very old document that talked about when christianity was being spread in europe, it brought civility and community.

  Different perspective on "Yes ma'am" and "No sir."

  I think it depends on where you live. We don't really use that much in the north. I am a teacher and the students just don't say it. In fact, the teachers agree that when kids say it, it feels cloying and, well, kind of slimy. Like Eddie Haskel on Leave it to Beaver

  These things are so often regional.

  And, please, finger bowls? I wouldn't frequent a place that uses them, however, I do enforce napkin use in the school cafeteria.

  The thesis is that the more disgust sensitive a person is, the more likely they support conservative causes like opposition to gay marriage (icky).

  Some people are more sensitive to some moral foundations than to others.

  Politically, liberals are more sensitive to care vs. harm and fairness vs. unfairness and

  conservatives are more sensitive to loyalty vs. disloyalty and sanctity vs. disgust.

  I will try to find the reference for that.

  I once had to substitute teach a 5th grade music class and we sang The Streets of

  Laredo. They really liked it, mostly because it was about dying which was cool to them and they did a grreat job of singing with vigor.

  I really had to explain what "lay the sod o'er me" meant. They had no idea.

  if all of the ex-watchtowerites and other critics of the religious bs we've been fed all our lives want to know and understand all the whys and hows of this monstrocity called the christian church, how it really came to be, what it is and what you can do about it, here it is on a neat platter.

  it will shock the sensitive ones among you (if there still are any) to your core.

  no fantacy and no bullshit here guys, this is the unadulterated truth.

  Let's Talk About Sex

  a old thread was bumped recently in which posters from 9 years ago raised objections to evolution basesd on personal incredulity regarding sexual reproduction.. i remember an elder in one of my old congregations saying something to the effect that "how could evolution be true, if men evolved before women...blah blah" you get the picture.. i have refreshed my memory of a chapter in nick lane's excellent book "life arising - the ten greatest inventions of evolution" and put together a summary.

  it would be great if others would add to it - cantleave, adam, tiktaalik, s&r, bohm et al?.

  here is my starter focusing on the problem with non-sexual selection.... if the driving force in evolution is the struggle of selfish genes to pass on copies of themselves to future generations, then sex seems counter-productive.

  So I Went back to my old Kingdom Hall Today...

  ...because it's now an art gallery.. it was really strange to have a look around the building and see what they have done with it.

  a lot of the old kh features are still there.

  they have kept the old platform, it gets used as a music venue on occasions.. i went up on the platform and faced the hall to bring back memories of the hundreds of times i stood there giving talks.. they have quite a few of the old chairs and the magazine/literature counter is still there but it has been moved beside the stage and painted.. all those huge windows have been restored and the place is full of light.. you can see a lot of pictures at their website, they have called it "the berwick watchtower".. the owner asked my wife and i if it was our first visit - hahaha.
