  I have too much crap!! How to declutter/dehoard.....

  some areas of our home are very nice, tidy, clean.

  and other rooms are just junk and clutter and clothes and papers.... omg.

  and now that we are getting older, we realize that we face a time of transition -- and this is hard to cope with too, as we believed the lie that we would never get old, etc.

  If you're just a random acquirer and things do not get put in their place, you might not realize how much of one type of item you have.

  As you are sorting it might be helpful to put things of one category together temporarily so you have an idea of just how much of one type of item you have. Then, ask yourself, "How many of these do I actually need?"

  For example, I like candles and candleholders. I store them all together in my "Candle Department" now. As I tidy, if I find misplaced candles, I return them to the Candle Department. If the candle area is full, then I know I need to purge.

  Also, if I want a new item, I know I must get rid of an old item. That's how you stay organized: One in, one out.

  Have you kept these things out of sentimental attachment? Have you just impulsively bought things you liked without considering space constraints at home? Is it difficult for you to organize things? Are any of these things valuable? Are you ready to purge but just havent had the time? Are you selling your home?

  More details would be helpful. My MIL is an actual hoarder and I have some experience here. You may not be a clinical hoarder, but just suffering some disorganization. These would require different approaches.

  Seriously, listening to talk after talk like this growing up was the reason I couldn't write a coherent paper in high school. I couldn't develop a theme and support it with relevant details. I bombed a lot of papers. It took me until college to figure out how to write an effective paper.

  It was painful until I figured out the formula. First you have to develop a thesis and then you have to defend it, and I'm not even talking about finding sources to support your argument, I'm just talking about writing simple 5 paragraph essays that had details that were relevant and support a clearly stated thesis.

  No instruction for that with the JWs, despite their claims of a college equivalent education.

  My experience with the people in my hall

  i've been awake now for about 6 months i'd guess and a member here for a couple of weeks.

  it's been eye opening to read other peoples experiences on here and i appreciate all of you.

  i've noticed in many, seemingly most, of your comments that you were not treated well at your hall or you have had very negative experiences in the "org" so i thought i'd like to share mine.. in all my time as a jw i have to say for the most part i always loved the people.

  I definitely would have voted for him as dogcatcher! Perfect career choice for him.

  At any rate, that second talk was ridiculous in so many ways. There was no clear theme, poor and rambling development, and a ridiculous propensity to fabricate illustrations that are dubious in their efficacy.

  Elevators? Herons? Welfare fraud? (People certified 85% disabled and yet working fulltime in the ministry?)

  My TMS evaluation:

  Gay advice from the Governing Body

  according to them you are not gay if you are attracted to the same sex, it's just hormones and you might grow out of it.. i wonder what hormones in particular they are talking about and if they feel that a female who goes through menopause is in danger of turning gay or even if taking hormones will adjust your thinking?.

  Fulltimestudent, I just want to say thank you for sharing your scholarship with us. I can tell you put a lot of effort into your comments both here and in other threads and I want to let you know that I appreciate it.

  I always enjoy your thoughts and upvote them often.

  I also agree that it is valuable to consider the insights of Eastern culture, since we live in Western culture and are therefore influenced by what we consider the norms to be. Stepping outside of one's cultural point of view helps us to disentangle "nature" from "nurture."

  Fortunately, I could read widely as a child and was encouraged to do well in high school. That support suddenly stopped when I wanted to go to college, though. It was bewildering and hurtful.

  I went to college as an adult, but haven't finished my master's degree, yet. It's been difficult to do while childrearing, and is much more expensive than it would have been 20 years ago.

  I'm still pretty resentful.

  Mensa accepts people in the top 2% of standard intelligence test. In a normal distrubution, with a standard deviation of 15, you would have to score more than 2 standard deviations (score 130) above the mean in order to qualify since only 95% of scores are represented within 2 standard deviations of the mean and that would leave 2.5% on the right end tale. So, I'm more than 2 standard deviations above the mean, but not quite there. :(

  It's kind of hard to even comment on this thread without sounding like an as which I think I kind of did. (I posted what literally went through my mind while considering the OP. What a nerd.) But, I would be willing to bet that there would be a greater percentage of of EXJW Mensa members than JW Mensa members.

  That said, my earliest complaints about the religion were that something just didn't make sense. I knew there was something wrong, but I didn't know much about logical fallacies as a teenager. I left at age 19, but didn't know TTATT until years later as the internet began blossoming. When I had the intellectual tools, I could finally put it all together.

  The religion really just doesn't make sense. It also takes some personal honesty to admit that, which is another issue altogether.

  You know, it's when people start using their own vocabulary to assert "freedoms" that the courts have not granted that an armed takeover of a federal wildlife refuge starts to make sense.

  I certainly hope that you were not supporting those folks, but your rhetoric is worrying.
