"Why I don't like people coming to my door, selling religion"
by Captain Schmideo2 inthis is from a blog, "news from me" that i read fairly regularly.
mark evanier is, among other things, a comic book writer (co-writer for "groo-the wanderer), a television writer, a great raconteur, and was a close person friend of jack kirby, one of the world's greatest comic book artists.he got an email from a jw trying to explain why they come to his door.evanier's answer is well thought out, and should explain to even the densest j-dub why people really don't like being bothered.
maybe his correspondent will take it to heart, but probably not.

I like when he says that when you are selling something as important as salvation and you sell it on the same model as door-to-door aluminum siding, you cheapen your message. -

jw.org cart days numbered?
by jookbeard inreading a report of an elder in a friends cong has been hiding and spying on the pioneers who seem to have a practise of dumping the cart and finding a local coffee shop, i've noticed that they do this in my local high street as well but this week they seemed to be all huddled around the cart, they've clearly been warned, a vast percentage of the time i see they seem to be more interested in fiddling with their mobile phones and gossiping, is just seems these carts are a means for the pioneers to turn in "easy time" i wonder what sort of figures show how much literature is being taken by the public?
i bet its very minimal.
naturally the gb would say they are a phenomenal success , we clearly know they are not.

Yes, now there's really no reason the elderly and infirm can't pioneer. -

Standardized or United in Love ?
by TheFadingAlbatros inone of the main trigger points who brought me to decide to officially separate myself from the jw org.by very recenly sending my letter of dissociation was reached when i became fully aware that the jw.org is standardizing their flock with their repeated manipulations and new lights instead of uniting them with love.
.
and once fully standardized according to the jw.org standards it is very difficult for a jw to have normal and human contact with "worldly" not standardized people.. thanks for reading and take care..

rmt1, interesting visual. I can see the bell curve in my mind. Acceptable Witnesses are within 2 standard deviations of the mean. Outliers are axed.
Fading albatross describes a situation in which a single data point becomes self-aware, of not only his position in the normal distribution, but also the entire distribution and the fate of the outliers.
Those hugging the mean are the most indoctrinated and very easy to manipulate. These data points are not very self-aware. The farther you move away from the mean, the less indoctrinated and the more danger the Society sees. Those in the 3rd standard deviation tend to talk. That is a danger sign to the Society. Once you are an outlier, you are a problem. Cue the witch hunts and the loyalty question.
The true sheep cluster together on the mean. As sheep do.
Anyhow, fun idea, rmt1!

Asshole Atheism – Not for me, now or ever.
by donny into start off with let me clarify that by asshole atheism i am not referring to strong atheism or any other type of upfront atheism.
what i am referring to is the belligerent, hateful atheism that smacks of trolls and other types who want to derail conversation or comments at any cost..
i enjoy hearing comments from both sides of the subjects of theism, nationalism or politics, especially from those who have intense opinions.

There once was a girl
who had a little curl
right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good
she was very, very good,
but when she was bad
she was horrid!

A couple questions for atheists on Suffering
by little_Socrates inwho told you that the world should be free from suffering?.
do you find any value in suffering?.
do you think it is possible to experience all the beauty and goodness and pleasure the world offers without also experiencing the bad?
-

The EXISTENCE of suffering is a problem for theists because it contradicts their worldview.
The EXISTENCE of suffering is not a problem for atheists because it is compatible with randomness of the universe.
That is not to say, however, that suffering cannot or should not be ameliorated. But, it is not intrinsically evil. Evil is a word with religious overtones. Suffering just is. And as humans who are empathetic to others' negative feeling states, we try to be as prosocial as possible and help others. We do this because humans are a strongly social species.
Something doesn't have to be intrinsically evil for us to want to do something about it. Sickness isn't evil, yet we want to cure it. Having a dirty house isn't evil, but we want to clean it. Getting bad grades isn't evil, but we want to improve them.

Suffering isn't intrinsically evil. It just exists.
A god who claims to be loving and all powerful, who is prayed to to relieve suffering and who is given credit when the suffering remits, yet who deliberately allows suffering to exist and doesn't allow suffering to be relieved for others, well that god is evil.
Suffering is only a problem if you believe in an all powerful loving God.

Another 'devoted witness' dies, without the fulfillment of the promises
by fulltimestudent inanother xjw called me this morning to tell me that a reasonably well-known 'old timer' had just died.
which set me thinking about death and the jws.
we were so positive that armageddon was coming in our life time that when death arrives on the door-step its hard for some to cope.. not that this man who just died may have been in that situation.

More wasted skills and turned down scholarships. More children put in second place after the organization.
And this man stayed in for the long haul. I wonder if he ever reflected back on his life and what his judgment about it was.
Rest in peace, Farleigh James.
