  camping information.

  my wife and i are planning on taking a year off and taking a jeep and a camper through all the 48 contiguous states and alaska and some of canada.. living in florida, i have always had guns and a concealed carry permit.

  but researching for our upcoming retirement vacation, it seems to me that i might not be able to legally carry firearms on my upcoming expedition.. it seems every state has different laws and licenses.

  what does a camper from florida do when he goes to new york or california?

  Just a travel suggestion...

  If you want to hit every state, here's a suggestion for Maryland and Virginia. Stay away from Baltimore! If you're coming up 95, turn east and visit Maryland and Virginia's eastern shore. Take route 50 east through Maryland. Visit Assateague Island which is an uninhabited barrier island on the ocean. It is wild and natural and they have wild ponies!

  Then go south into Virginia and visit Chincoteague Island and from there cross back over to the Virginia portion of Assateague island to see their wild ponies. This is the home of Misty of Chincoteague, the pony of the children's book of the same name. You can stay in the town of Chincoteague. It's a quaint little town where in July, they have the pony swim and sale which manages the herd and benefits the local fire department.

  This is a unique slice of America and you avoid the big cities. Plus, you cross two states off your list at the same time!

  I believe, in general, that a shotgun would be less problematic than a handgun, and if you're using it for wilderness protection, it may work for you.

  Keep in mind that in some states if you get pulled over, you must immediately disclose that you have a firearm to the police. And, I know that in the state of Maryland, you must carry your firearm unloaded with the ammo in a separate compartment of the vehicle. Not sure if there is an exception for a concealed carry permit or if Florida's would be considered acceptable in MD, but it's nearly impossible to get a CC permit in Maryland.

  Also, you are not getting into any sensitive sites like the White House or other museums in DC with any kind of weapon if you're planning on visiting them or other cultural sites.

  In general, the north does not take kindly to weapons, especially handguns, and they are highly regulated. I would research every single state before you travel through it.

  i have been frustrated by the inability of most jws to escape their bondage to the kh, despite repeated exposure to negative information about their religion and belief system.

  perhaps it's due in part to something called normalcy bias- a definition i have found is:.

  normalcy bias is part of human nature and, to some extent, we are all guilty of participating in it.

  Zimunzucz, I also read The Orwellian World of Jehovahs Witnesses from my college library in the mid 90s.

  I was already out simply because the whole thing felt wrong, but reading that hit me like a ton of bricks. I could really see the parallels to Orwells 1984. Eerie.

  The Confederate Flag

  the latest controversy over the confederate flag just sums up to me the state of dysfunction that exists in american society.. in summary: a white supremacist nutter shoots 9 black people dead in a church.

  he's clearly inspired by the messages of others which the confederate flag is often a symbol of.. it seems like a no-brainer to remove it.

  not only isn't it removed, it isn't even lowered at all as a mark of respect.. and of course now there are the people who want to defend their right to have it.

  Flying the confederate flag, to me, is kind of like still having the bumper sticker for your favorite candidate...months after he lost the election.

  "We Already Forgive Him" - What Does That Mean?

  the children of one of yesterday's shooting have told the media that they have already forgiven the killer for what he did.. dylaan roof has not apologised for what he did.

  he hates black people and probably regrets not killing even more.. what does it really mean to forgive?.

  if the legal system asked the victims relatives what they want done next would they ask for dylaan to go free and unpunished?.

  I've been coming to a similar conclusion lately. And it can become such a habit that you even do it without faith being involved. You can put on a facade in your community as well.

  Witnesses don't have the habit of authenticity.

  It came in today's mail

  it came today, the dreaded envelope containing my personal copy of "return to jehovah" from my elderly, desperate mother.

  it included a small note asking me to read it over and to let her know what i think.

  she got it at her assembly.. firstly, i'm angry that she continues to push her religion on me, given that i stopped attending meetings over thirty years ago, and very offended that she assumes that i still want to be a witness, which is her choice of religion, not mine.

  well, i don't wanna rant too much but sometimes things cut you don't they.. a family member had a get together for the family, jw and non jw and of course i wasn't invited being da'd.. i understand why they couldn't invite me but it just made me think.

  in normal society this wouldn't happen.

  i'd have been there.. the shunning is so unnatural and damaging.
