Curious as to what a wedding at the KH is like...

The weddings I would go to also ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS (and I do mean ALWAYS) played the stupid 'Electric Slide.' Gawd, how annoying! It was like THE song that everyone would always hop up and dance to. After so many times of hearing it I would cringe when they would start it. Usually I'd find myself on the dance floor and then as soon as it would start and everyone was jumping up to come to the dance floor I'd sit down. Man, it was so annoying. Then it turned into the 'other' electric slide...I don't know what that one's called, but where it says '...Now Slide to Left....Slide to Right...' I would just sit there in bewilderment. It's so funny now to think of it. Still have Electric Slide phobia though. LOL!

Also at JW weddings: No bouquet toss, no garter, no dollar dance ... translation: no fun

Sometimes some with some more $ sprang for a Latin band. One wedding I went to had a pretty famous Mexican local band and the place rocked. The whole place was jamming and we all had fun.

350 of your closest ~~friends~~ brothers. People you see at the assemblies, who don't even know the bride/groom.

I was once at a wedding where they asked all the brothers to please assist in serving the food. All the women and children sat in this big auditorium (think gymnasium) and the men in suits ran around w/ aprons on to serve the plates of food.

Don't forget the carefully rehearsed mandatory-waltz. Or maybe that's just in the Spanish congregations. (practices were held just as frequently for these as they were for dramas)

I also remember one time when the father of the bride (and mother of the bride) walked her down the aisle, passed her over to the groom and then jumped up on stage and married them himeself. He was fine but got choked up at the end. I THINK my dad wanted to do that with me too -- but fortunately I married out of the 'truth'.

What's Your Pet Peeve At The Meetings?

overtime, overtime!

the thing that was a kill-joy for me was going overtime, just ask my wife and kids.

my entire day would be ruined.

By far, the fake people at the meetings. I was in a Spanish congr. and, as customary in the culture, women frequently kiss hello (along w/ a handshake). It was one quick movement... It was weird that all of a sudden this click of women would do it, but they were selective, then someone from their click would say Hello to me like that... when I KNEW these chicks couldn't care less about me. It was all so fake and stupid. (p.s. Almost upon my exit these kiss-hello's were also frequented by sisters AND brothers...and it was ok if you were friends w/ them -- but it also weirded me out a little when some guys would do this when they probably were just trying to get closer w/ that sister cause they wanted to date her. Happened to me... shiver!)

It would also bother me when the elders would pressure others in the hall to give a 'ride' to the elderly bro/sisters who had no other means of getting their on their own. I didn't mind picking them up, but they'd always talk from the platform that this was something we ALL could/should do to help, but inevitably, it never worked that way. It was always the same family doing all of the driving around town to go pick up sister X cause everyone knew WE would pick her up.

Wow, I can't imagine what you're going through. Honestly, I looked you up cause I hadn't seen you post in a while, and I feel a certain motherly attitude when I hear of ones that are trying to understand this whole JW stuff -- while being on the outside.

I will pray that your love and support helps your friend through this most difficult ordeal. She's SO lucky to have you there.

maybe the advice i need is somewhere else in this forum, but i really don't want to have to search for it, i really need some advice now and i don't have the time to sift through all of the other entries here.

so please bear with me and share any and all advice you have, even if you think it's not what i want to hear.

Hi Super_Becka,

I wish I could write more, but I have to run now...but I'm off to have dinner w/ my husband, the "non-believing mate". = ) I'll share with you my experience at a later time. However, my happy ending became as a result of me leaving the organization...and I **was** --unlike your b/f, a full-fledged JW. (I've known some fence-riders too though, some family, in particular.) It was a hellofa ride...but I've never been happier. Take note, however, that there's either the JW stays a JW and reeks havoc along the way, OR the JW leaves ...and there's hell to pay for that, but there could be the light at the end of the tunnel.

For the most part, we had some real nice ones. We were in a small congregation and the CO and his wife would stay with us at our house for the week. I remember being a little kid and having these 'guests' stay with us. I used to feel so priviledged that we got to have them at our house (which was very humble, the couple would use a pull-out sofa-bed at first, till later we got a bed in there.)

I remember one couple in particular, they were very sweet -- they stayed with us when I was about 9 or so. The sister helped me fix blow-dry my hair before bedtime and the brother actually sat with my dad and played the guitar and sang with us. It's very Brady Bunch now thinking about it, but at the time, it was a real nice feeling cause they were extremely genuine and sincere. I remember them both saying that my mom was 'the typical mom' (a complement) -- cause she made them such yummy pancakes in the morning.

Another couple who stayed with us were also very nice. The CO would stop us as we would kiss our mom and dad goodnight -- and just when we thought 'oh no, what did we do?' ...he'd have this soft smile on his face and say 'what about me? don't I get one of those too?' As a little kid I looked up to them, like an aunt and uncle and I'll never forget those memories.

On the other hand, I did run across a few CO's later on (teens, early 20's) that were out for blood. My dad (the ex-elder then) and mom would talk about how mean he was. Yep, he was just a jerk. And his wife had the personality of a flea.
