CORRECT ME IF AM WRONG!
by tresbella ini just stumbled on something at the bookstudy last week!
o.k as you all know we are studying the draw close to god book and in chapter 15: "jesus sets justice in the earth" read paragraph 10 on page 152 and tell me if you do not see a correlation: (and i quote)
the religious leaders buried god's law under a mass of man-made rules and regualtions.

Such questions were addressed with rigid, detailed rules
You mean like trying to determine whether or not conduct between a young man and women was "loose conduct" or "uncleaness"Q: "Were your hands above the underware or below?"

by Snapdragon ini was just reading the thread on how to pick the proper pumpkin.

it was always "satan's holiday" that i still tell my friends that i probably won't participate in the festivities when i decide to have children.. what do you guys do about this issue?

I just let my daughter go to a Halloween / Birthday party combo.
And if a Druid were here right now I would have a beer with him.

Geez Sherry don't bite my head off, this was in the article quoted at the start of the thread
Reeve's support of stem cell research helped it emerge as a major campaign issue between President Bush ( news - web sites ) and John Kerry ( news - web sites ). His name was even mentioned by Kerry earlier this month during the second presidential debate.
and I was just projecting the next thing we are going to hear about it. I didn't realize from the title of the thread it was a Chris Reeves tribute thread.
I'm sorry Reeves died, I'm sorry he was ever injured, I'm sorry I offended you.

According to the History Channel web site -
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Now we are going to hear from Kerry how Bush killed Reeves because he wouldn't fund any *new* strains of Stem Cell Research - even though any private company can research any new or old strain and the gov't is funding the current strains.

What has changed since I left/got kicked out in '92?
by outbutnotdown ini have long ago come to the conclusion that the jw religion is a negative influence on society for many reasons.
their "love" is so conditional that it doesn't count as love..... their prophecies are contradicted by many different, more accurate dates from which their chronolgy is based (587 b.c.e rather than 607 b.c.e., for example).... and i could go on, but most here have developped an understanding of why the witnesses do not have "the truth", so enough said about why we are where we are.. but what has changed in the last 12 years, since i left?
i felt that the about-face on the 1995 generation change of thought brought a lot of people out, and thankfully so.

Well the generation that was supposed to see the end (1914 + 80 = 1995) didn't.
The associated with the UN by become an NGO in 1991 and left in 2001 after being found out.
About 600,000 have left due to realizing they were in a cult. -
