Welcome Sara - I also will look forward to hearing from you. Yes, your description of your aunt as a single mom disillusioned with her church makes it obvious why she was easily influenced by jw teachings. Your post is very interesting indeed.

Why I'm Here...
by Sara Annie inso many stories from so many people.
i've read with them all with interest and sympathy, and felt that if i am going to stick around and be a productive member, i should probably tell my own.
i know i am not the only non-jw on this site, and i wanted to offer the perspective of a 'never-was' as to why i am here and participating in the discussions.

Will they ever say "Peace and Security"?
by JH inwith all the trouble around the world, do you think that one day we will hear "peace and security".
we heard this so often when we were in the jw's, but no one knew how it could happen.
i don't see any peace in the horizon.

Yeah, we'd hear it, especially around 1986. Of course, they modified their 'understanding' somewhat to include peace talks that could take place over a span of time, rather than one distinct declaration. Whatever the case it was, and still is, used to keep the jw faithful on alert, and hence, very active in jw concerns.
Great post of Russell's words above. There he was, a hundred plus yrs ago, saying the same thing.

Diamond........... runningman, neon, and wolfgirl are right on target. Forget the brewski. They want you back in service, that's the whole Idea. The idea isn't to just hang out and have a nice time, it's to get you 'reactivated'.

Why does the WTS say Jehovah will Judge?
by Pleasuredome in.
why does wts keep printing in their literature that jehovah will judge when in the gosple of john it clearly states that christ will judge, and that judging was given to the son by the father?
"for the father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the son," john 5:22

I'm sure they'd explain thst since God appointed Jesus as judge, He in effect does the judging.
However, it seems to me to be another case of Jesus being overlooked, while the name Jehovah is over-used. JH makes a good point; Witnesses really can't say much to or about Jesus, it would seem.

It is now 2003.... Where is Armageddon?
by Nosferatu ini find it extremely amusing how each year is passing without armageddon.
"for the year 2000, i visualize a world transformed into a beautiful paradise!
but i don't think that either the present world or its rulers will live to see that day.. we are living in the last days of the system of things.

Sometimes, I think about trying out another religion (of course, if I were found out, I'd be considered disassociated). But in realty, I am not very religously inclined anyway. I've never prayed much at all, and I think being religious kind of begins with that. If I don't want to talk with God, why bother with the rest of it?

Would you post as much if...
by Jourles in...the number of posts next to your name was not there?
or what if the date from the time you signed up was missing?
do you think that some here crave the attention that they receive just by the amount of posts that they create?

I don't think stats and status here are really in any way like the numbers and status are measured within the Org. In the case of the latter, such things affect the lives of people and how they may well be viewed by their friends, family, and other jws, and by elders. That can be and usually is very stressful, and I don't think we're dealing with that here.
Personally, I am kind of intrigued stats, so I like the posting numbers, etc. I check the stats section every so often just to see who's posting a lot, and which subjects are hot, etc.

I noticed that the guy who sent this ridiculous e-mail put an "lol" in there. So, he thinks it's something to laugh at? Well, we're the ones the ones laughing at his stupid, self-righteous e-mail message.
And as Mulan quoted that jw from your former hall as saying: " why didn't they just leave them alone?". Good question!

Question for SwordOfJah and other real JWs
by Realist ini have a request.. could you perhaps state all the real facts that support the idea of the gb being inspired by god?.
i am not talking about feelings, faith etc.
but of real proveable fact...things that would be accepted in a court or that would survive scientific testing.

As ashitaka and other said and implied, the WT says that God directs them, and yet, they do not (or, cannot) really say how it's done. They use terms like "leanings" of the spirit.
Also, the following logic: 'if it is true that God used humans, like Moses, to lead 3,000,000 Israelites, then he must be using humans to lead his people today' still offers no proof as to which humans He chooses. Using that logic, one could just as easily say, 'well, there's 900 million Catholics, so God must be using humans to lead them, since he used humans to lead 3 million Israelites'.
Also, the Witnesses always fall back on the "we're the ones doing the preaching work" explanation, but in fact the good news about the Christ has been spread abroad by many missionaries and others, including Bible societies and so forth.
Back in Bible times, it was miracles that were the proof needed that God was leading a person or group.
