Who Would Be Good Judges On American Idol?

it looks like the ladies are officially gone along with simon cowell.. who do you think would make good judges?.

I admire Ellen for saying that she found it difficult to "judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings", as she said. Here is a celebrity who makes a lot of money, and yet she seems to care about the feelings of others. I think it also shows that it does take a certain kind of person to sit there and make judgments.

I'll liken it to the times we had speech counsel at the TMS. I was the overseer and I often felt bad about giving a "W" (Work On This). I could sense people squirming in their seat as I counseled them, and it made me and them uncomfortable. I guess they did away with it, finally.

More Society cutbacks - Society says "screw you" to the publishers yet again

at our service meeting it was announced that there is a change in the manner in which magazines are now to be delivered to the congregations.. up until now, magazines were sent to each kingdom hall via ups.

in years past magazines were sent to each congregation po's home address via ups.. going forward, magazines will be sent only as far as the assembly hall.

it is the responsibility of each kingdom hall to send brother(s) twice a month to drive out there, pick up the magazines, and return.. this of course saves a little bit of money for the society - shipping larger packages to fewer addresses will cost less.. however, what about the expense to the local congregations?.

If I were still an active jw, I'd be incensed at this. Not only do they have people driving all kinds of miles, there's also the poor depot servant (slave) who has to work there all day.

TRINITY Challenge for JW's, Unitarians and Anyone Else

trinity challenge using only the new world translation of the holy scriptures -- let us debate and reason on the scriptures about whether god almighty is a trinity, or is only one person.. on another thread, bane said that we know for a fact immediately that nearly all religions other than jehovah's witnesses are false because almost all of them believe in the trinity.

and bane claims he can "out-scripturize" anyone with the help of jehovah.

These discussions will go on forever, and I think one reason for that is that humans have to use the Bible to try to prove their point. It seems to me, from reading every comment on this thread and many, many others over the years, that one can use the Bible to, in effect, prove (or at least establish to some degree) both concepts - Trinity and no-Trinity.

To me, therein lies the problem - the Bible may very well teach both concepts. Perhaps it either gives us contradicting indications, or it intentionally teaches both concepts. Or maybe there's some in-between - some level of existence by God that we as humans simply don't understand. After all, would God really expect mere humans to fully comprehend all aspects of His being? Could this whole thing instead be fluid - could God exist and act on both levels (Trinitarian and non-Trinitarian).

Take the Holy Sprit for example. Some say it's a person. Others say not. The Bible is used to argue both. Could it be that the Holy Spirit can act as both? Could it be a non-person which at times takes on the aspects of a person? Or vice-versa? How do we really know for sure?

A question for those who believe in noahs ark

many times in the recent weeks, i have heard statements to the effect of "you dont understand biblical science", "science proove the bible right" etc.

i want to begin by saying i really like it when people make those kind of broad, sweeping statements because when each party in a discussion come clean about what they believe to be true, you can easier get down to a factual discussion.. and i really do want to understand biblical science.

i has spend a long, long time reading cuts-and-pastes on this site, and i have read a large part of the content on aig.

I would guess that Flood geologists would have serious problems trying to respond to this thread, which involves an interesting take on matters - what observed, scientific occurances would a global Flood have predicted? - Like Evolution Theory, or General Relativity, which predicts certain outcomes which should be observable and confirmed by such observation.

So far, only TD has offered an extensive answer, and as his comment suggests, the global Flood would predict occurances that scientists have not observed.

I can't come up with anything either (I'm not a Flood geologist or apologist). To me, it seems that the Flood would predict outcomes that we have not observed, such as the extremely rapid evolution and speciation that TD mentioned.

many people have contacted me about the recent claims by a group called noahs ark ministries international.1 the evangelical organization claims to have discovered noahs ark.2 i have responded on several occasions to these dubious claims on my blog.3 and still, this group has stood behind their claim,4 insisting that what they have found is real based largely on the belief that because the bible says the flood and the ark are historical, it must be so.

so, instead of addressing their spurious claims yet again, i thought i would approach the issue from a different angle: forget about noahs ark; there was no world-wide flood.. the worldwide flood described in genesis 6-9 is not historical, but rather a combination of at least two flood stories, both of which descended from earlier mesopotamian flood narratives.

The Flood not being global or being a story doesn't make Jesus (or Peter) a "liar", any more than his relating the Rich Man and Lazarus story would make him a liar. We all know there was no "Rich Man" and no beggar named Lazarus. We also can easily see the exaggeration (hyperbole) in the parable. But unless you believe in a place of fiery torment, you know that this whole story is just a contrivance that Jesus used to make a point. And even if you do believe in a place of fiery torment, this is still just a story.

If the Flood were merely a story (or a local occurance) I would suppose that Jesus would still refer to it, much as we might refer to the Good Samaritan story in order to make a very important point about being a true neighbor.

Whether there was an actual good Samaritan or not is kind of besides the point - it's the story that resonates. Just because Jesus made reference to the Flood does not in itself make the Flood a historical occurance, nor does it make it global. Could the Flood merely be a story, which Jesus pointed to in order to make a point?

today is my 2yr anniversary since being df'd - and my life has changed a lot!!!

this is a letter i wrote to my parents...i did see/talk to them in feb when i had my surgery, but of course as it goes, now that i'm 'better' - they are back to shunning me.

so this was sent to them both, so that they understood that despite all the jw bull ish, and how they are treating me now - i'm ok and happy!

What's hard to understand are the words of Jesus at Matt 5:48. Understood in a literal sense and lifted from the context, they don't fit with human experience. In context, Jesus is discussing the elevated standard of loving one's enemies, not just their neighbors. He's taking the Law of Moses and expanding on it while amplifying the underlying principal - in effect, one must do more than just love those who love them.
