  Stupid reasons why songs are labeled "bad"

  one, i have heard that, since boy george was on heroin, that listening to culture club would amount to taking it yourself.

  to me, that is a lame excuse to ruin a song or discography.. another example was michael jackson's thriller album.

  they wanted me to get rid of that album because i would be "supporting that apostate" by listening to cuts from it.

  Madonna's music was seen as undersirable (it wasn't all that good anyway ). I had one of her CDs, and an elder visting my home was visibly displeased when he saw it on my CD rack.

  There was a lot of talk about Thriller - don't buy the album, don't watch the video. I remember several discussions by Witnesses about that disc and the title song especially.

  It's not just jws either. I remember a letter to the editor of a local newspaper written by a "Christian" who objected to Bennie And The Jets by Elton John, contending that the lyrics fomented teen rebellion. Perhaps the letter writer was a jw, but it could have been any fundamentalist.

  I feel that time has actually slowed down considerably since I stopped running around like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to meet the demands of the jw schedule. My weekends have filled in nicely with activities that I used to have to cram into Saturday afternoons because I usually went out in service both weekend mornings. Plus there were the meetings. So a typically "zealous" jw weekend is really just one afternoon. When I was an elder, I was lucky to have even that.

  I look forward to my weekends, during which I can now enjoy going to the gym, watching sports, and traveling about an hour to visit my child. My weekends aren't the stress-filled marathons they used to be.

  One elder once asked me "since you no longer attend meetings, what do you do with your time?" What he failed to understand is that now I finally have some time.

  I guess part of the problem for many people is that God never seems to rise above the human societal contraints of the times. In an era during which women were treated as property, God treated them as...property.

  Sox, Cubs......I Believe

  i believe in curses.

  the billygoat.

  the bambino.. the sox just lost to the yankees 6-5 after leading by three in the 8th.. we all know what happened to the cubs.. and i believe in the rally monkey too, from last year's angels (though i guess he's looking for work these days, poor little fella).. this is all in kidding, but it does make me wonder.....are some teams "cursed"?

  JRK, allow me to quote the Matthew 24:34: "This generation will be no means pass away [until the Cubs win another World Series]."

  Of course, since the Cubs have not won one since 1908, we must understand this "generation" as overlapping.

  Resurrecting an old thread - ESPN's 30/30 last night aired "Catching Hell" dealing with the Cubs' loss to the Marlins in 2003 and the infamous Bartman incident. The program also dealt in large measure with the 1986 Red Sox loss vs the Mets in the World Series and the infamous Bill Buckner play.

  This program revealed a very dark side of sports - fans who have no perspective. Fans who are willing to go as far as calling for the lynching of a person because they do not understand the concept of what a game is. It's just that - a game, not life and death.

  A close look at the Red Sox loss shows that they had already blown their two-run, 9th inning, 2-out lead before the Buckner play. And the Cubs were in fine shape even after the Bartman incident - until they unraveled, due mainly to Alex Gonzales's boot of a sure double-play ball that should have ended the inning.

  Since this thread started, the Sox have won two World Series, but the Cubs haven't been close since.

  The Dog that did not bark: Jehovah's Witnesses' greatest mystery

  'the dog that didn't bark' is an expression from a sherlock holmes mystery.

  it was an important clue that led to identifying the criminal.. it seems that the killer entered and left the estate grounds one night but without the guard dog barking an alarm at the intruder's presence as expected.. from this nonevent holmes reasoned that the dog must have known the killer and that clue led to solving the case.. .

  jehovah's witnesses are "the dog that didn't bark.".

  In the past, when I'd explain jw teachings to non-jws, it occred to me that we were a religion of NO...we didn't really DO much of anything; we just AVOIDED everything.

  this is another cut and paste, but i make no apology (unless it has been posted on here already), as it is very informative.

  evolution is one of the best supported, most elegant, and most powerful theories in all of science.

  as it stands, it is the best explanation that we have for the diversity of life on earth.

  Nice post by cantleave. Every jw should read it - it's a concise, simple explanation for what evolution theory is and is not. Of course, jws would turn their eyes in aversion as their mind remained closed. A shame.
