I really don't like shaking hands. I've seen so many guys leave a bathroom without washing (and I've heard that it's pretty common among women too) that I no longer wish to shake hands. So I try to do so only as a formality in the appropriate situation.

Off-topic: hand shaking
by Libelle inthis is totally unrelated to anything jw, but it's the only group i'm in online with such a mix of men and women, so i'm asking.
what's your experience with hand shaking?.
me, when i meet someone for the first time, i offer to shake their hand.

Bible Character Cards on jw.org??
by Scully ini'm not joking.
this is in the family/children section on jw.org - mary - joshua - daniel - ruth - and more!.
i'm lmao that these are so similar to hockey cards or baseball cards that my siblings and i used to get in trouble for collecting when we were kids.

I've been out for ten years, and every one of those artists' conception drawings looks exactly as (cheesy) as I remember it.

Dreaming of witnesses
by Honeybucket indoes anyone have dreams or nightmares about jehovah's witnesses, the society, or your trapped loved ones?
i do all the time and they wont stop.
i wake up with cold sweats and an upset stomach.

I do have the occasional dream in which I'm doing something jw-oriented like giving a talk, etc. Honestly, they are troublesome. I always feel a sense of vexation during the dream. Something always goes wrong; for instance, the speaker before me runs very far overtime or I don't get to deliver the talk. Something always gets screwed up.
One dream that I had was actually kind of telling. I was sitting on a sofa at a social gathering of some kind. On my left was a non-Witness that I now consider one of my best friends. On my right was a JW elder who I served with on the body of elders. While the elder said bad things about me, the non-Witness had me rest my head on her shoulder and said comforting things to me. I'm not really into the notion that dreams mean anything, but that one kind of symbolized my departure from the religion and quest to find new friends who accept me for who I am.

How Many Friends Did You Lose Over This Election?
by JustMeNonJDub ini lost one, and i am saddened by it.
i may disagree with friends over politics and/or religion, but the only reason i would cut off a friend is if they betrayed me.
anyone else lost friends or cut off friends because of politics or religion?.
-

It's never easy to lose a friend, but anyone who is willing to alienate over politics is not worth having as a friend anyway. People need to look past that stuff, and if they can't, then maybe you're better off without them.

Witness Speak: the worst of collection
by grumblecakes inso we all know the jw vocabulary is a weird one.
what words or phrases bugged you the most?.

Some of my (not) favorites, some of which have been covered:
Jehovah - it's used far, far too often. I used to count how many times it would appear on a single WT page, for example. It's amazing how they over-use this name.
Fine - "brother, that was a fine talk", "what a fine meeting!" etc
Glean - One elder I knew used this term all the time.
Article titles that ended in - How? and - Why?
Assembly
Convention
Elders School
Beneficial
Mate
Momentary touching of breasts
Petting/Heavy Petting (great photo posted on an earlier reply)
Divine (seemed to be used in Convention titles all the time)
Scriptural Divorce
Approved Organizational Procedure
Mother (as in Jehovah's Organization is our Mother)
Work - as in "Preaching Work", Disciple-Making Work". They made the very word "Work" sickening.
Submission (Wifely Submission was probably the worst example)
Husbandly Head
Head - as in husbandly head, but also just the word "head", like hearing some sisters say "he's my head".
Like - as in "Christ-like" and other uses for like as a suffix.

In Jehovah's Witnesses- Elders Have Rights- other JW's Don't- 10/15 WT
by flipper inin the 10/15 watchtower study edition on pg.
12 is the article " what kind of spirit do you show ?
" right away this article starts drawing the line of demarcation in the sand between who has the right to make decisions within jehovah's witnesses and who does not have the right to do so.

Having served as an elder for a decade, I can honestly report that I was no "doctor", not by any stretch of the imagination. I was a guy with a full-time job who found enough time to do all the usual jw-related activities. I had little or no ability to offer anything resembling what a qualified physician or psychiatrist could.

As A Jehovah's Witness Did You Never Accept Or Believe Something They Taught?
by minimus ini never believed that in 1975 or by the end of the 20th century, we would see the great tribulation occur.
some witnesses would listen to fred franz' talks where he clearly told his audience that 1975 was the end of 6000 years and the beginning of the jubilee....or something like that.. was there something that you never truly accepted that you were supposed to believe as a jehovah's witness?.

Good thread...here's a few things I didn't buy into:
Shunning of family members, and shunning overall. I never bothered shunning anybody.
The blood doctrine. Ideally, yes, I can see not using blood, but in an emergency I can't see dying over it or letting a child die over it.
The interpretations of Revelation prophecies as applying to Conventions and Watchtower articles.
The age of major life forms on earth, especially prehistorically in regard to dinosaurs.
