  The protagonist and narrator of the novel, Jane is an intelligent, honest, plain-featured young girl forced to contend with oppression, inequality, and hardship. Although she meets with a series of individuals who threaten her autonomy, Jane repeatedly succeeds at asserting herself and maintains her principles of justice, human dignity, and morality. She also values intellectual and emotional fulfillment. Her strong belief in gender and social equality challenges the Victorian prejudices against women and the poor.

  Catholic "Just War" Doctrine vs JW Pacifist Doctrine

  having been a practicing jehovah's witness for 30 years, i had been exposed to their pacifist doctrine, which taught that christians were not to enlist in armies or participate in warfare on any level.

  this doctrine was later modified somewhat to allow for non-military "alternative" service as a matter of conscience.. i had always thought of the jw doctrine as lofty.

  it was based on bible verses such as isaiah 2:4 and matthew 26:52. the idea was that, if all people were jehovah's witnesses, carnal warfare would be eliminated.

  You ask an interesting question. While it seems like a no-brainer that anyone in his/her right mind would have done whatever possible to thwart that terrorist effort, I still hesitate to automatically say 'of course a jw would have helped out'. My guess is that the jw would, but not before 'prayerfully considering' (as the wts like to say) whther his action would be approved by God or considered an act of violating "Christian neutrality", another common wts term. But I'd hate to think he/she'd do nothing. Then again, who knows?

  My Sister got married and I wasn't invited

  yesterday was the wedding.

  all five of my siblings and their spouses and children, my mom and dad and their spouses, even my three daughters were invited.

  but not i. she is the only one who is jw.. they sent the invitation to the girls in their name only to my address.

  Blue,

  I think you did the right thing in making the best of an awfully difficult situation. As you said, one day, she may leave the jws, or at least soften her attitude toward you, and then perhaps this will pay off. Even if that doesn't happen, you did make the best of things and you should be commended for that.

  Probably my all-time favorite jw publication was Commentary On The Letter Of James. After I found out (here) that Dunlap wrote it and found out more about the man and what happened to him, I kind of figured it was no coincidence that I liked that book best.

  QFR on blood reprinted in Watchtower magazine

  in the june 15, 2000 issue of the watchtower magazine, the wts printed a question from readers entitled "do jehovah's witnesses accept any minor fractions of blood?

  well, guess what?

  4 years to the day later, the wts reprinted that very same qfr word for word!.

  I haven't seen the QFR in question, though I did read the one in 2000. However, I wouldn't be surprised, since they showed a tendency to do that when, for example, in the 8/2002 KM, they addressed the treatment of Df'd and DA'd jws by pretty much rehashing WT articles from 1981.

  well as you would have guessed from my name, i am a proud witness and i feel obliged to preach to you about the promises that our wonderful creator, jehovah god, has promised each and every one of us, of any race or background.

  i know that you already know what he has told us through his word, but i am curious to wonder why you have chosen to jump off the narrow road which leads to everlasting life.

  is it because you have had a bad experience in god's organization?

  Webstering (kind of like Googling) the word Pacifist yields this according to Webster's Ninth Collegiate Dictionary:

  Pacifist: Strongly and actively opposed to conflict and esp. war.

  Pacifism: 1. Opposition to war or violence as a means of settling disputes; specif: refusal to bear arms on religious or moral grounds. [Italics mine] 2. An attitude or policy of non-resistance

  So maybe my use of this word to describe the jw doctrine does fit, even though, as TD pointed out, WT quotes show that they don't think it fits them.

  Why are the publications anonymously written?

  the society would like to say this is done (except for the 'life stories') because 'all recognition' blah blah blah should go to jehovah...but what do you think are the real reasons why everything is published anonymously?.

  and, is this also a common practice in other religious articles/publications?.

  While they say that the reason is for credit to go to God, having writers cloaked in anonymity keeps readers/critcs from investigating the credentials of the writers.
