JanH and AlanF particularly both were instrumental in writing essays that certainly got me thinking. JanH used to have a blog at Salon called Secular Blasphemy, but he apparently became busy in other pursuits, and I don't think he publishes there any longer.
JanH, as was the case with several other members of what was then JW Discussions, ran afoul of Simon and left the discussion board. In those days, a more Wild-West type atmosphere prevailed at the board. The crux of the issue seemed to be whether the board should be a totally free, no-holds-barred type of board or whether some restraint was necessary due to the concern that the board would become a turn-off to lurking jws who were looking for guidance, as well as to members who did not want to engage in constant arguing that could become personal at times.
Back then, several spin-off boards were created by former JWD members. While the atmosphere may have been more 'free', it was much more contentious, with name-calling common in many threads.

In the Open Hearts commercial in which the US Serviceman is talking over the computer with his wife and son, she just seems unconvincing when she says "it's beautiful" when she sees the Open Hearts pendant.

"Feeling sorry for yourself" about being hit by your husband is not Christian 2/15/12 WT Page 25 P 12
by yourmomma inhave anyone of you read, the absolutly jaw dropping paragraph in this article about a women who was hit by her husband?
its in page 25 of the 2/15/12 wt study edition (i read the dumbed down version).. .
if there was any question, that the watchtowers stance is for wives to simply take it when their husbands abuse them, this makes it crystal clear.. who the hell is scanning these things before they go to print?

Bookmarked. This is a jaw-dropping thread - except for the fact that, having nearly 40 years of experience with this religion, I can attest, as several of the past quotes already highlighted show, that this horrific tripe is par for the course for the WTS.
This article's "example" of Selma is disgusting. Sadly, it is not at all surprising.

Are You Afraid To Die Alone?
by minimus ini know of someone that is concerned that she will be all alone when she dies.. are you afraid to die alone??
?.

I'm going to be in the casket alone anyway. Unless someone wants to join me in there, I'll be forever alone once I die. So the actual action of dying alone doesn't frighten me.
I had a relative who died in an accident while several states away from his home state and town. Facing death alone is something that many people do contend with, and that is kind of sad. I know it's tough on the family - not being near that person, hearing about it over the phone. It is difficult.

Stupid reasons why songs are labeled "bad"
by WTWizard inone, i have heard that, since boy george was on heroin, that listening to culture club would amount to taking it yourself.
to me, that is a lame excuse to ruin a song or discography.. another example was michael jackson's thriller album.
they wanted me to get rid of that album because i would be "supporting that apostate" by listening to cuts from it.

Madonna's music was seen as undersirable (it wasn't all that good anyway ). I had one of her CDs, and an elder visting my home was visibly displeased when he saw it on my CD rack.
There was a lot of talk about Thriller - don't buy the album, don't watch the video. I remember several discussions by Witnesses about that disc and the title song especially.
It's not just jws either. I remember a letter to the editor of a local newspaper written by a "Christian" who objected to Bennie And The Jets by Elton John, contending that the lyrics fomented teen rebellion. Perhaps the letter writer was a jw, but it could have been any fundamentalist.

I feel that time has actually slowed down considerably since I stopped running around like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to meet the demands of the jw schedule. My weekends have filled in nicely with activities that I used to have to cram into Saturday afternoons because I usually went out in service both weekend mornings. Plus there were the meetings. So a typically "zealous" jw weekend is really just one afternoon. When I was an elder, I was lucky to have even that.
I look forward to my weekends, during which I can now enjoy going to the gym, watching sports, and traveling about an hour to visit my child. My weekends aren't the stress-filled marathons they used to be.
One elder once asked me "since you no longer attend meetings, what do you do with your time?" What he failed to understand is that now I finally have some time.

I guess part of the problem for many people is that God never seems to rise above the human societal contraints of the times. In an era during which women were treated as property, God treated them as...property.
