Reflecting on friendships. Right off the bat I will say I never had any true friends at the Kingdom Hall. I truly wish I could remember one person at the KH that I could call a friend today. To be fair, I did know some really nice, sweet folks that were acquaintances.. I didn't keep up with them after I left. Unfortunatley, they were treated like crap too. They didn't keep up with me either.
Where were my true friends? I didn't meet her until Feb 97. She knows everything about me. She introduced me to my other true friend in May 99. He knows 95% of what she knows and a few things she dosen't lol, (but he's another story lol!). However, they are not now & never were JWs., therefore they don't have the JW frame of referrence. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but something is missing.
Commonalty, history, vocabulary.........
After joining this board a few weeks ago, perhaps I've found it. I have had several conversations with a person from here via telephone; . For me, it seems like we've known each other forever. She kindly connected me with a person, also from this board, that is connected with my JW past. I first talked to him on the phone for 2 hours. I accepted an invitation to his home on Xmas where I spent another 2 hours. With the exception of my aforementioned friends above, I have never experienced such warmth, hospitality & acceptance like I did in his home.
Where were my true friends? Perhaps they were waiting for me to leave JWland. I hope I've found many here. I hope I'm their friend too.

Hey, thats a great gift! I remember my parents always making wine and fermenting something. It was always interesting to watch the fermenting process. got me interested in chemistry. My dad made beer once from a kit & bottled it; sadly it wasn't very good Sorry, I don't have any knowledge to share, it just brought back memories. The oak flavor powder doesn't sound very appealing. I'm interested in how it all turns out. If I run across anything I'll let you know. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Survey about Depression & Therapy
by ESTEE ini would really like to hear your opinion on this topic:.
you know how the jws look down their nose on a person who falls into depression?
i am curious how many people here think that if you have been in therapy that you are emotionally weak.

Estee,
I sincerely hope my comment was not offensive. I'm posting here to clarify my statement.
I am grateful that the article came out because it was then "permissible" for me to seek help for my depression & anger which I did. Even though it didn't come out soon enough, if it hadn't come out at all I would not have sought treatment & would have eventually succeeded in my suicide attempts. I definently don't credit any JW or any of their other literature for me being alive and functioning today. To my understanding, until 1987, psychiatriac issues were always considered a spritual weakness or demonism. Most all therapy was taboo. The article I referred to revealed the corelation between certain brain chemicals and depression. That made it a physical problem & therefore was acceptable for a JW to seek prescription drug treatment. Again, its my understanding is that this was the 1st time this information was given to the rank & file cong. members and declare drug therapy acceptable. A warning was also givien that psycho therapy, the customary conjunctive treatment, should be avoided based on the prevailing beliefs that therapists do not share JW standards and could sway our christian thinking. Or in other words, try to convince us of the obvious that we were part of a cult and help to free us from it. The JW brand of psychotherapy is as you said, do more, more, more of their kind of spritual works, all to coverup the obvious that a person is a member of a dangerous cult.
I'm not sure what the official JW viewpoint on mental illness is, & sincerely apologize if my statement referred to one. IMO, the "unofficial" JW veiw is anyone that can't for whatever reason slap on a happy face & blindly promote their dogma as if they don't have a care in the world should be treated with cold contempt.
