Just outside of town heading north towards Dalhart the lanscape starts to take on the feel of the old west. There are canyons, mesas, and buttes. I just thought it was a neat area to drive through, even though most of the panhandle seems to be flat plains. I have been toying with the idea of going back to Texas again later this summer and once again visiting the Amarillo area. Amanda wont be able to go on this trip, and she's not much into the desert landscapes anyway. There are several things I want to do in Amarillo. I want to see the Palo Duro Canyon, The Big Texan steakhouse, the caprock canyons, maybe do one of those chuckwagon dinners. I checked into motel rates there and they are very reasonable. I just cant decide if I want to go there or back to Dallas for a visit. I believe Shutterbug lives near Amarillo. Does anyone else live in this region?

actually she was my stepgrandma.
she was 86 years old and in a nursing home in florida.
she was a jw and had been active up until the last few years of her alzheimers disease.
Thank you all for your support and condolences, its not the money issue, nor the JW issue that is keeping me away from her service, its simply the time issue. If they had went about this in a traditional manner and had a service within 3-5 days I could make it, but as it stands the service will be on saturday afternoon. I could take off work all the way up until friday night (with pay) and wouldnt have to be back until 10 pm saturday, but since the service is on saturday, there wouldnt be enough time to drive home. I wish I could go, but im not experiencing any guilt, its just simply out of my hands.

Actually she was my stepgrandma. She was 86 years old and in a nursing home in Florida. She was a JW and had been active up until the last few years of her Alzheimers disease. They will be having a memorial service in Florida, but not until next saturday, which stinks because I cant make it that late in the week. If they had chosen to have the service on a wednesday or thursday I could have attended, despite the fact that im on a shoestring budget since coming home from Texas. I felt really bad last night that I cant attend, but finally Amanda told me that it was probably best that I cant make it due to the fact that it will be in a Kingdom HAll. She will be cremated, which is definitely not what she wanted. Her husband is still alive and in the same nursing home also. He is 88 years old. I wish I could at least be there for him, but there is no way I can get off until next saturday. Im off for the next 2 days, plus they would give me 3 days bereavement pay which could take me up until friday, but that still wouldnt be enough time. I wish they would just hold a "normal" funeral service like most people and have her buried within 3-5 days, at least I would be able to attend the service, but as we all know there is nothing "normal" about Jehovah's Witnesses, not even in death.

on the movie of the week "elvis".
i play judge friedman.
elvis gets in a fight at a gas station and has to see me.
Amanda says they will be re-playing the movie again this wednesday, I will have to double check that.
Dave
just a little while ago on the elvis movie we saw bryan play the part of the judge.
we had been waiting all week in anticipation of this movie.
there were several different scenes involving judges, i think his name on the movie was judge friedman.
Bryan, you did look heavier in the movie, did they use some kind of makeup trick to make you look that way? Your face looked more rounder than it does in real life. We just saw you 2 weeks ago and you have lost weight since Dallas last year.
Good Job Bryan, I may go back over the tape again and listen to your voice and compare it to your real one.

well for the past 3 days since coming home from texas, i have been doing my yearly in-service training at work, and in todays class they had a mental health worker come speak to the class about mental health issues.
as class was dismissed i just knew i had to talk to her about jw's and that is what i did.
i spoke for about 20 minutes to her and told her all about how the wt society tries to manipulate the children and instill fears, anxieties, and doubt into the children's minds.. she listened to me intently and agreed with most of the points i was making, she didnt have much knowledge of jw's beforehand, but she definitely could see how raising children in the jw religion could be detrimental to their emotional and psychiatric growth.

One of the other classmates, an older woman who works as a nurse for our department listened in and joined in on the conversation. I gave them both and earfull to listen to and tried to combine it all in a short amount of time. The nurse gave me her number, and also the number to a friend who is heavily involved in SNAP, which is the group for Catholic molestation victims. I had told her all about silent lambs and that was why she gave me her friends number.
I even showed them the picture of Elsewhere holding up the 1934 yearbook, the yearbook in which the WT Society wrote a letter of support to Hitler and blamed the economic troubles of Europe on the Jews and the Anglo-American empire. It was a real eye-opener for them both and I was so thankful to share my knowledge of JW's with them. They were very receptive, in fact that mental health care worker told me in the end that JW's sound like a brain washing cult, I laughed and told her I couldnt agree more with her analysis and that I too feel they are a cult that manipulates people with fear and lies. I will keep in touch with the nurse, even though she works a different shift at the Jail than I do, and also a different housing unit.
I felt so good when I left there today, it was almost like I was on cloud-9

it was good to see bryan and evelyn again, and hopefully i will be back down that way again soon.. while in louisiana we stayed 2 nights with my stepsister in gonzales la, and visited the french quarter in new orleans.

While in Louisiana we stayed 2 nights with my stepsister in Gonzales LA, and visited the French Quarter in New Orleans. I really enjoyed New Orleans as it had been 20 years since I had been there. Amanda wasnt too impressed though. While in New Orleans we walked down bourbon street, visited the Jackson Brewery Mall and also had Cafe au lait and beignets at the cafe du monde. We also eat at a cajun restaurant called the Louisiana purchase cafe, and also an old favorite of mine--Pancho's mexican buffet.
Well on monday morning we headed out to Texas to visit with country-girl for 4 days. We did alot of sightseeing while there and went to the Alamo, toured a cave, went to the hill country, Luckenback Texas, The riverwalk in San Antonio, and also a snake farm/petting zoo. We had a really good time visitng with her and her husband. Thank you so much for hosting us country-girl !!!!
Well we headed out toward Dallas on friday morning and made 2 stopoffs. The first one was in Waco where we saw the famous suspension bridge crossing the Brazos river, and then we backtracked south east of town and visited Crawford Texas, home of President Bush. We actually ate lunch in the very same restaurant that he eats in while staying in crawford.
Well we finally made it to Plano, and just in time to unload the car and go over to Kosta's restaurant for the Aposta-Dinner. The food was excellent, and Nina made a good suggestion. Im guessing there was about 12-14 people there at the table.
The next morning I took Amanda over to the shops of Willow Bend and she got to do some shopping at Saks and Neiman Marcus, mostly window shopping though.
We arrived at the Crawfest about 1:30 and several people were already there. The webcam was a great idea, and I jumped in front of it every chance I could. I dont know what the official count was, but a good time was had by all. I finally got to meet some people that I have wanted to meet.
Dragonlady76 was really cool, and her disgust for the WT Society rivaled mine, if she only lived closer I would be honored to have her picket with me.
I was also glad to meet Z-Man, he was from my hometown, and even though we didnt know that many people, it was really cool to talk to someone who was from my neck of the woods.
The food was excellent and there was plenty of it, I nearly ate myself into a stupor-LOL
I was so thankful that Shutterbug and his wife and daughter were able to make it.
We had to leave the party around 9:30 since we had to leave Texas early the next morning.
After leaving Texas we took the scenic route home and drove through the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma, it was ever bit as beautiful as I remembered it from last year.
I was hoping to meet up with BEM, but she must have been busy or sleeping on sunday morning. She lives very close to these mountains.
In Arkansas on top of the mountain there is a lodge with a miniature train that travels around the mountain and also a petting zoo, we rode the train together, but Amanda didnt want to accompany me to the Zoo, so I went by myself and saw the mountain lion, bear, rattlesnakes, and various other animals.
We topped off our trip by eating Dinner in Benton Arkansas at Brown's Country Store. Brown's bills itself at the biggest and best buffet in Arkansas. The food was delicious and I eat BBQ Ribs, Deviled Crab, fried chicken, and fried fish.
We drove straight on through and arrived in Knoxville around 4 AM. We had a good time and hope to visit Texas again.
Thank you all in Dallas for hosting the Aposta-Crawfest, but a special thanks to Big Tex, Nina, Elsewhere, Valis and his girlfriend.
Once again thanks to country-girl for hosting us.
See you all again soon,
Dave and Amanda
