  i was just watching this on you tube, about the growth of the lds church.

  i think these numbers may support a number of theories that have been discussed on here.

  (1) the jws are bigger as a religious organisation.. (2) jw membership is more engaged, as well as, more ethnically diverse.. (3) wt is been honest with its counting.

  I don’t deny that statement. But what we are talking about is the activity rates of that 6.5 million. How many believe it enough, that at the very least turn up to church once a week. Ive always maintained there isn’t a lot of differences in numbers between the two faiths.

  For example, well go with the 33% activity rates. (6.5x 33%=) 2.14million LDS members in the USA. Let’s say the JWs at that time were 1million publishers. Of that 1 million there were a further 50% that were non members e.g children of members and interested people. Total of 1.5 attendees at jw meetings. I would suggest that 50% is been conservative ,and that it could be closer to 100% increase to that of publishers. What ever percentage figures you want to use, both totals are certainly with in, a ball park, range of each other.

  (3) Wt is been honest with its counting. It’s counting methods may under estimate, rather than over estimate total.

  (3) From about the mid 90’s is when the LDS started to go into decline, and has been ever since. Umm, why dose that sound familiar.

  (4) Although the LDS growth has slowed. In that, it has failed to keep pace with world growth. The church is still treading water. It is sustainable, and it won’t die.

  (5) Contrary to what many may think here. This may support just how well the JW preaching work has been. For example, the difference between adult representation of the church, as opposed to teenagers. How, more people out on the street dose not necessarily equate to more converts. Its quality of the people representing the church, rather than quantity of representation.

  To be honest I see the ban on birthdays and Christmas as been a positive. Even now that I’m out I am great full I don’t have to, or feel obligated to, celebrate it. I’m happy to say merry Christmas or toast a glass of wine. But spending a whole day setting up for a party is something I’d much rather not do

  Had doubts, and was incredibly unhappy for years. I lurked here for about 18 months and officially joined 7 years ago just as I was physically walking out the door. I was 39.

  I agree, with the comment, that so many of us have left at middle age or older is because of the availability of information. In my case I would probably still be in the windowless walls of the the watchtower if it wasn’t for the net. My biggest regret was staying for as long as I did.

  It wasn’t until I left the JWs that I started to take a closer look at the LDS. I remember when I walked out the door, thinking that it wasn’t possible to get any more crazy than the JWs. I was to latter realise how wrong I was.

  From a doctrinal point of view the LDS are in a more precarious position the JW. Its hard not to think of the BoM as a veneer for a conman who was a sexual predator. Honestly, Rutherford had nothing on Joe Smith / Brigham young.

  Now, if we put doctrine to one side, as a life style choice, I would choose LDS. I Wouldn’t even have to think about it. Basically the LDS are a weirder but more user friendly version of the JWs.

  I was privy to an irate phone witnessing conversation

  i happened to be privy to a phone witnessing conversation that my aged father was conducting, the person on the other end just climbed into him.

  he got real nasty and my father ended up hanging up on him.

  i could see that my father was distressed about it, but or course put it down to satan and persecution.
