Thanks for these excerpts. Even while still a JW I remember thinking that some people in the Congregations thrived on trouble. As long as they could be martyrs they were zealous examples in the congregation. But when life was good (and they allowed it to be good) they dropped off the JW scene.
I know many people who are like that out of the JW realm as well. They seem to thrive on strife. If a good day came along they wouldn't know what to do with it. Life does not have to be one bad situation after another. But some almost sabotage their lives (often unconsciously) just to maintain the anxiety to which they have become comfortable. "I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have to deal with ..."
Not everyone going through years of problems are like this. There's not too much you can do if trying to cope with a depilating illness for example.
Even if the exJW world, there are some that have been out for decades, been vehemently angry and striking out for as many years and are still as angry and hurting as they were 20-30 years ago. I can't help but wonder how much of this can be attributed to the desire to live in adversity rather than facing a 'dreaded change' to living life happily?
Uzzah - mostly at peace but still trying to figure many things out
