i have wanted to share this event with you all for the longest time, and i am finally ready.
oddly enough, i still feel ashamed that this happened to me, although i understand it wasn't my fault.
the story begins in the late seventies, and i was about twelve years old...... i lived in a very small town in the midwest.
Somebody please stick a fork in the Watchtower....They're done.

Don't get scared off. We don't bite (at least not too hard).
Welcome,

witnesses have been trained to think a certain way.
"conversation stoppers" was invented so that a witness could change the way an argument was heading.
when you are able to "pick the brain" of a jehovah's witness, you may tend to get easily irritated or astonished as to how they reason things out in their mind......so......how would you describe the brain of a typical jehovah's witness??
While I agree with the general theme of this thread, I have to point out that from what I recall "conversation stoppers" were defined as things a householder would say in order to STOP a conversation in an effort to promptly end the visit, not an attempt to engage the hapless door knockers in further debate. Am I right on this?
Thanks,

it's funny, my brother-in-law, a very myopic and strict jw, said something to me once that i still feel has a kernel of truth to it even though it came from a braindead idiot.
"brad, i hated my twenties.
life really begins at 30.

the article found on page 26 gives some biblical examples of why one should cultivate a giving spirit.
then it has a subheading entitled 'jehovah - the greatest giver' which leads to the final obvious subheading 'showing gratitude to jehovah', which really translates to: 'give us (the wts) your money'.
so, what ways do you think the society encourages one to give?
My Aunt always says "I knew it was the truth because they never pass around a collection plate like the Catholics do".

the watchtower's luxurious aircraft was damaged the first time in 1995:
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief2.asp?ev_id=20001207x03587&ntsbno=anc95la077&akey=1
"on june 12, 1995, at 1530 alaska daylight time, a wheel equipped cessna 402b airplane, n710ws, registered to and operated by the watchtower bible organization and tract society, collapsed its nose gear while taxiing back after landing.
Jesus Christ, what did I start here?
Don't bring Him into this please...Jesus has nothing to do with the Watchtower.

asked my dad the other day, a man who da'd himself seven years ago yet, amazingly, still believes 99% of what the dubs teach just what makes him believe the dubs have the "truth.
" what were the first words out of his mouth?
"well, they don't believe in the trinity...." .
Blueblades,
That's very interesting, I hope I can find that brochure. My Mom will freak out on that.

Bradley,
But, in the end, it's all bullshit.
Very well put.

the witnesses say they are living today in a 'spiritual paradise".
is'nt paradise supposed to be something really good, ecstatic, perfect?
which makes me think......if this is what they consider to be a "paradise" of any kind, what will the earthly paradise be like acording to the jw's?, and who would want to live in a "paradise" where only jw's are the ones there?
The Witnesses say they are living today in a 'Spiritual Paradise". How so? Is'nt paradise supposed to be something really good, ecstatic, perfect? Which makes me think......If THIS is what they consider to be a "Paradise" of any kind, what will the earthly paradise be like acording to the Jw's?, and who would want to live in a "Paradise" where only JW's are the ones there? That would really suck, living in a society where the Elders are in control, and everything comes down from the faithless slave class, etc. If this is really what God had intended, to destroy 99 percent of the people HE CREATED, demonstrating his anger and indignation at everyone who dared not listen to a couple of mentally unstable stumblebums when they came to their door, then COUNT ME OUT. Why is God supposedly so damn angry at people anyway?(according to the jw's). Screw that.

that question is raised on page 709 in the "proclaimers" book.
notice the answer the book gives.
"because they believe and accept what the bible says as to the identifying marks of true worshipers.
WE know we have the only true religion because the "Faithful and Excrete Slave Class " says so.What further proof is needed??
You hit it right on the head...That's the exact kind of crap I get from my aunt when faced with having to have an actual debate on issues. Except she says "discreet" not "excrete". I like yours better.
