this is a spin-off of another thread where my *mild and chaste* friend, mouthy, admitted to wanting to meet her dream man, tom jones, and that she would even go so far as to throw her bloomers at him, if that is what it would take to get his attention!
well, the mental picture this painted was far too much for me to bear, so i encouraged her to save her red polka-dotted "unmentionables", not only because she might need them in the future, but because i didn't think she'd have to go that far to get his attention.
and i said that - because of a personal experience with him.
I saw John Travolta filming a movie on a streetcar in New Orleans. We passed him once and when we got off at the end of the line and boarded another streetcar to go back towards the French Quarter, our driver was nice enough to slow down and stop when we approached his streetcar again. He seemed very nice and posed for several pictures.
My only claim to fame. Does it count?

cats may well live with us, but they don't live like us.
i've noticed over the years that how we perceive stuff and how cats process the same info is often so different as to be almost alien.
here are a few i've been thinking about recently (all contributions of more examples gratefully received!
tabletops: a place to bat everything on to the floor in an attempt to tell the humans that you are hungry or want a treat
catlove: only displayed to the humans when you are tired of hard cat food and want the soft kind
favorite spot: the place where the heat from the furnace is blowing the hardest
i remember when they would discourage kids from taking colors or coloring books to the meetings.
so i thought ok, i will give my kid a pen and my book of bible stories to keep him busy.
then they said that was a bad idea because he might write on the furniture and it wasnt good to teach them to write on the wbt publications.
My oldest (now 21) was a PERFECT baby until I took him to the meetings. He would just bawl and bawl and most of the two hours I sat in the bathroom with him trying to calm him down. (Must have been a sign, eh?)
I was a pretty young mother at the time and I remember a couple of the sisters who were "veteran mothers" telling and SHOWING ME how to smack my SIX MONTH OLD child on the leg when he cried during the meetings!!!!!!
I've never understood why the dubs had such a problem with "Sunday school" for children. It makes absolutely no sense to expect children to sit through 2 hours of boredom that ADULTS can hardly stand!
last night (of course, night..it had to be night) i was using a small plastic bathroom cup, and also walked over to flush the toilet.
suddenly, the cup slipped from my fingers and was sucked into neverland.
the most horid feeling came over me, and i thought "that cup is not going to go down".
Everyone will get a kick out of this story and, Sentinel, you won't feel so dumb!
In the first couple of days after starting my current job, I used the bathroom. As I turned around to flush the toilet, my brand new name badge fell right in and flushed right down!!!!! Embarassed as hell, I went in and told my new boss what happened. We both thought it was pretty funny and I made myself a new badge. (I work in H.R., so it was my job anyway.) It kind of became a joke in my department that I was the first person in the whole company to flush their name badge.
A couple of months later, I was walking by that same bathroom and noticed the carpeting outside the door was soaking wet. I opened the door and found about 3 inches of standing water and a toilet going crazy! I called Maintenance, and they came to fix it. After it was fixed, one of the Maintenance guys came to my office and handed me the flushed badge, stinking of the toilet that had been it's home the last two months! The Maintenance guy really thought I wanted it! You can just imagine how it smelled!
Five years later, the incident still comes up and I'll go down in the history of my company as the woman who flushed her name badge down the toilet and flooded the bathroom.

The teaching that you would have no memory of those loved ones that didn't make it into the "New System". So, you just forget that you gave birth or had a sister? If that were true, then you wouldn't really be the person you were before. Right? Don't all the people you know throughout your life help make up each person's individual personality?
Makes you want to scratch your head and say "Huh?".
I never wanted to live forever, anyway.

well,to explain that,i haven't posted on this site in a while and obviously since this is my first post,it was a different screen name when i did.
my last post was about 6 months to a year ago.my status is, im a "fall away jw".i started having doubts about 2 years ago and they've done nothing but increase since i've been out.this isn't due to a spiritually week state of shutting "god" out of my life as a strong jw would say.instead,i've seen more shit go on in 2 years being away but still associated, then i care to list.yes,i am still associated through my wife and family,and have managed to stay at piece with everyone by keeping my mouth shut when it comes to my doubts, and now disbelief.
everyone has pretty much left me alone about not going to meetings.it wasn't that way at first, but i think they just gave up.my wife still believes its the truth but she would be considered a week jw since she doesn't go to the meetings alot.. as a 24 yr old newly married couple who just stopped going to meetings,we lost most of the "friends"we had.
I lurked on this board for more than a year before I had the courage to post. Even though I've been out for 20 years, I was afraid to put too much personal information in my posts lest someone recognize me. My relationship with my mother is shaky at best, but at least she still talks to be occasionally. If someone would say to her that I was on this APOSTATE FORUM she would cut all ties, I know she would.
Slowly, I have grown the courage to post more personal things about myself and if it gets back to my mother, so be it. I'm not going to be afraid or guilty anymore.

i was preparing comments on another thread and some strange memories started to surface.
one that had haunted me years ago was the disfellowshipping of jan. she was a 30 something woman who had found herself single when her husband ran off with her good friend.
jane was no angel herself though: a slim, suntanned, blonde headed, party girl who's life style had made her quite familiar with the judicial process, which is how jane and i became more acquainted.
During my JC meeting, almost 20 years ago, I was young and stupid and had committed fornication with my boyfriend who I ended up marrying (big mistake, but that's another story). I remember CLEARLY, like it was yesterday, that I sat in the middle of a circle of elders, all grilling me about what I had done, when I had done it, why I had done it, etc. There was only one elder that didn't ask me questions, a man I remember as very kind. He seemed ashamed to be there. When they started asking me for the explicit details I BOLTED out of the KH like a bat out of hell!! Jumped in my car, started it up and sped out of the parking lot, spewing gravel everywhere. One of them actually followed me for a while. I think it was the kindly elder making sure I didn't do something stupid, I guess. I'll never know for sure. I just know someone followed me for a while.
Of course, I was DF'd and never looked back. The few times I have set foot into a KH the smell sickened me and the memories of that day come flooding back.

ABSOLUTELY! OMG! I was raised in "The Truth" by a single mother (my father died) and she was considered "spiritually weak" for several years. I remember several shepherding calls to our house which basically made my mom feel like shit for a while and she would drag my ass to EVERY meeting afterwards because she felt guilty. It also didn't help that I am a tall woman, therefore a tall girl. Not only was a made fun of for being tall and gangly, I was the only JW in my school. You know the scenario, all holiday parties were spent in the school office sitting in a chair, etc. I felt like a non-person for a very long time.
Fortunately, I am intelligent and have found strength through my children, my husband and my career. Not to toot my own horn, but I have an extremely keen wit and have the ability to entertain people with comedy. I've heard that a lot of comedians are victims of depression and I can totally relate. It makes sense to be able to hide your sadness behind comedy.
I love myself as much as I can. I feel as if I heal a little bit more with the passing years away from the Borg.

Yes, I agree, snopes is a great reference. It really pisses me off to get an e-mail forward at work that's OBVIOUSLY not true. At one time, I was getting so much crap from co-workers that I devoted a whole company newsletter article to internet urban legends and snopes.com. WAKE UP PEOPLE! You're not going to get a gift certificate to The Gap by forwarding this message to the 50 people in your address book! I also pointed out that forwarding e-mails clog up the server and make it slower for legitimate e-mail.
My newsletter article did seem to put a stop to most of them. People can be so gullible.
