This theory of yours, about the Cubs being linked to Armageddon and Steve Bartman = the Antichrist? It makes sense. I mean, think about it.
Steve Bartman is not the Antichrist. He single-handedly held off Armageddon for at least another year, so the preaching work could continue. Think how many will be saved because of his courageous sacrifice.
i was thinking back about some of the more memorable dramas at the district assemblies.
i think my favorite was the one about lot and his wife ... the one where she looked back at the city and turned to a pillar of salt.
i also liked the one some time back about the wicked witch of the east and wicked witch of the west ... especially the part where the building fell on the wicked witch of the east because she was unfaithful ... and i liked the way it ended when the entire family including her uncle and next door neighbor were able to pioneer together.
Actually, I remember one that really freaked me out. It involved two plot lines, one from the present and one from ancient Israel. In the present-day story, this young couple had committed fornication and was called before the elders. She was repentant and got reproved; he was defiant and got the boot. This was was interspersed with an Old Testament story in which our hero, a particularly overzealous Israelite soldier, is so horrified because his mates are fornicating with Gentile women that he charges into a tent and drives a stake through one of the couples, caught "in the act." (Needless to say, this action occurred offstage.)
The moral of the story, as far as I could see, was that fornication was a MUCH MORE serious sin than murder. This is definitely not a welcome message, since I was just hitting puberty at the time and was spending a good deal of my time imagining various scenarios in which I might actually get to commit fornication. Murder, on the other hand, was of very little interest to me--and still is.
Where did this cartoon come from? Just curious.

Personally, I don't think invading China is a bad idea either. But one evil dictatorship at a time, please. I thought you all were against war? Why invade Egypt or Saudia Arabia if we can use the diplomatic solutions you all think work so well against them? They're time is coming. Like I said, one evil dictatorship at a time.
This is the kind of absolutist, GOOD/EVIL thinking that scares the hell out of me. And you keep saying Saddam, Saddam, as though we're just going to go in and kill one guy. Remember that we are talking about an entire country and its people. The UN estimates that 500,000 Iraqis may die in a full-scale invasion. Are they all evil too? And then the Chinese, and the Egyptians, and the Saudis . . . Sure, let's just roll over them all one at a time! That'll make the world a better place, won't it. Sounds a bit like Armageddon to me.

How many "weapons of mass destruction" does the U.S. have? Does it plan to use them? And how many people (Iraqi or otherwise) are going to die if/when it does use them?

I hazily remember a WT article that said that, in addition to pop music, you should beware of classical music because "many composers led immoral lives." What does that leave? Tone-deaf songs from that godawful hymnbook? Ugh.
And hey, let's not stop there: what about literature, art, sports, etc. "Many plumbers have led immoral lives, therefore plumbing should be avoided.

i was just talking to a friend (a ms jw) that told me that he was told by the elders on a talk he was about to give that according to their last elders school there are instructions not to use the terms "the watchtower society" or "the society" or "the organization" anymore... but rather to now always use "the faithful and discreet slave" or "the slave"... .

Could it be for legal reasons? In light of the recent spate of lawsuits against WTBTS, it might be an effort to obscure the connections between corporate headquarters and the actions of individual congregations. Imagine trying to explain the "Faithful and Discreet Slave" in a court of law. They'd think you were out of your mind.

I'm new to this board. I'ts nice to be able to jump into an ongoing discussion among like-minded people. Too bad this wasn't around 20 years ago, when I was newly DF'd and feeling like a freak. Mostly, the JWs seem like a bad dream now, except that my parents are still living the nightmare.
I'm a big music fan, and every once in a while I've see JW references sneaking into pop culture. For example, there's an album titled "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" by the band Tortoise. It's all instrumental (pretty cool stuff, actually), so there's no overt reference to JWs. I'm guessing they just saw the phrase somewhere and liked it. There's also (or used to be) a band called Jehovah's Waitresses (ha ha). Has anyone come across other references out there in popculture land?
i find it extremely amusing how each year is passing without armageddon.
