I get it. So why doesn't Trump just say we are implementing a tax to support US production?
(Instead of some BS about China paying us back).

(so as not to hijack the tariff thread, i thought this would be better to keep separate.).
i guess my economics and finance classes in college have not prepared me to understand the latest round of tariffs/taxes that trump is instituting.. i really don't understand who is "paying" these fees and where they are going.
first of all a tariff is a tax and anyone who doesn't believe that needs to invest in a bridge in new york city.. to keep this as simple as i can, i'm thinking of a $1,000 refrigerator that i am buying.

Are you inferring that the elders may have my $214 ?

To keep this as simple as I can, I'm thinking of a $1,000 refrigerator that I am buying. With all the different percentages being levied against China, let's for numbers sake say that it now costs me $1,200 to purchase the unit. So somebody, somewhere has the $200 over the original price of the refrigerator.
Trump says that China is paying for it. (I guess this is like my parents paying for part of my car when I was in school?).
So according to Trump, China is sending the $200 to me. Correct? Well, I did not, nor I have I heard anyone else getting some sort of rebate form that I mail to Beijing or somewhere. Maybe it gets mailed to the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC or one of their Consulate Offices in another city. But I checked their website and see nothing about my rebate.
Well, did the money get sent to Rub a Dub via the US Government instead? Are they holding the money for me? Do I get mailed a check or simply deduct this from my personal tax return next April? I checked the IRS website and see nothing about my money there either.
So I paid $1,000 for the refrigerator, $200 extra that I am waiting for the Chinese to send me, but dammit I had to pay my 7% sales tax both on the $1,000 for the refrigerator AND paid the sales tax on the part the Chinese owe me. Isn't that double taxation?
Anyway I am still out the $214 (including my sales tax) that China owes me.
So did I misunderstand Trump or am I taking him out of context? I have heard him repeat time and time again that China is paying for it.
I just want to know how to get my $214 back.

when any mass shooting happens is it the president’s fault?
i’m talking over the last few decades..
It alters the probability, that is all.
Simon ...
I totally agree, life is about probabilities.
You get a good education, the probabilities are in your favor to get a good job.
You live a healthy lifestyle, the probabilities are in your favor to live a longer life.
You drive carefully, the probabilities are in your favor not to have an accident.
Yes, life is about probabilities.
Guarantees no.
Probabilities yes.

FINALLY THE BALANCED VIEW .......
While everyone feels they have to take sides and and either be pro-gun or anti-gun, there is a very workable solution if cooler heads (and less politics and lobbying) were applied based on two simple ideas/facts:
(In Full Disclosure, I Personally Own Multiple Guns)
1). The right to bear arms does NOT include all arms. You can't legally purchase any kind of weapon you wish. Many high-powered and automatic type weapons are either not available to the general public or require difficult to get federal licensing and permits. The most obvious difference with assault (military) and assault (citizen) type weapons is that the military versions are typically automatic, meaning the weapon will continue firing when the trigger is pulled once. The same weapon in the citizen variety is just one shot per each pull of the trigger. Slower but still extremely lethal given the number of bullets either of these military style weapons can hold (33 in some cases). What these types of weapons are used for other than shooting people is beyond my pay grade but will be discussed at a later time by others here, I am sure).
2). So given the fact that the government does indeed limit what we civilians can have within the confines of the Second Amendment, why not just make obtaining the guns more "reasonable" in the context of the 21st century. Regardless of one's political views, guns are designed to shoot people and things. Guns are dangerous if not in the hands of someone who has been trained to properly use them. The same can be said of cars, airplanes, trucks, motorcycles, medicines, moving hazardous chemicals, wiring a house with electric, getting a tooth pulled, etc. The list goes on and on and on .....
And what is the one common element with all of those mentioned? You need training, a license or some other method of determining proficiency in using or doing it. I just can't start with ANY of those items mentioned (and hundreds or thousands of others) and say I am qualified and do it. By the way, would it be legal to do any of those mentioned without some sort of liability insurance to protect someone if it caused harm to an innocent victim? Let's not go there for the moment.
And yet, oddly, a device that is designed to harm whatever it hits and can cause immediate harm to the user or those nearby .... well .... in some States if they put a mirror below your nose and you fog it, then you are qualified. No reasonable test, no proficiency exam, no nothing, other than your some cash or a credit card.
I can't legally do ANY of those things just mentioned above by being the nice guy that I am ... except buy a gun.
Come on people ... on both sides of the aisle .... this is not rocket science (and you would need a permit to launch a rocket ... lol).
Reasonable regulations and registration of weapons is in no way taking away ones rights.
Wouldn't you feel better knowing that a person buying a gun has at least some basic training on how to properly use a gun and some sort of basic psychological test.
Don't you like to know that the next time you board an airplane that the pilot and copilot have had training?
Don't you like to know your doctor has had proper training when prescribing medicine to you?
Do you want anyone to be driving a car next to you regardless of his or her age or ability to drive?
I really don't think this is an extreme position.
Maybe the comments above are something that neither side really likes.
In my mind, that would make it a good thing.
(Thank you for watching our show tonight. These ideas really aren't mine. I just took a few hours and watched Fox News and then MSNBC, put it into a blender, and this is what came out.)

In response to your question of which would my family and I prefer being in a mall with, a guy with an axe or an AR-15 ???
Obviously, based upon our Second Amendment rights, we would prefer the guy to have the AR-15 since the Constitution does not give us the right to "keep and bear axes."

That might be true but it is awfully hard to kill and wound multiple people in a few minutes with a billy club.

They may not kill you, but you would have welts all over your body for a few weeks. Trust me on that. I have seen a lot of the old British movies and what those Bobbies can do with a billy club.

Your chart looks fine but it doesn't show the complete facts.
While England and Wales have a miniscule percentage of gun homicides compared to the US, I bet they could beat the hell out of you with a with billy club.

is it my imagination or are most witnesses weird, odd, and “different “?
it seems every congregation has a couple of weirdo elders, pioneers and ministerial servants.
and then you see those witnesses who attend meetings but most people seldom associate with them because... they are eccentric..
Almost daily I get "weird" (confused, hopelessly naive, just darn peculiar) customers that makes me wonder how they survive in the world.

I agree with peaceful pete on this one. In my several jobs I have worked over the years, I came to the conclusion that people in general are screwed up. Even ones who appear perfectly "normal" (if that even exists), have family members that are messed up (i.e. a 14 year old daughter or niece addicted to meth, "borrowed" $25,000 from the parents credit cards, is pregnant and is not sure who the father is ... etc etc etc). You get it.
As he mentioned, the JW's have no corner on the market when it comes to the odd, strange and dysfunctional.

If anyone believes that Trump is to blame for this then they have to accept other shootings as being the fault of other politicians, where they have much clearer and direct link with their rhetoric and someone's actions.
Simon ...
I really can't agree with that. Politicians do have an impact on people, and words (or lack of words) do matter.
Many of us grew up with hornets (big, nasty bees) that would form a big nest in a tree. Generally, if you would leave them alone they would not bother you. But one of the crazy things we would do as kids was was to throw stones are a nest if we found one. Basically the game was throw the stone at the nest and run like hell to avoid some nasty stings (and they DO sting). The hornets didn't really know who threw the stone but would go after anything that moved!
Most would agree that Trump throws stones ... a lot of them. The hornets get really pissed. Listen to the chants at his campaign rallies (most recently, "Send them back. send them back"). That's not normal. Not at all.
And then you have the idiot politicians and the NRA repeating that it's not the gun that kills the people, it's the shooter. Well, that makes as much sense as blaming the hornets for stinging when they get provoked.
There is plenty of blame to go around in all of these shootings over the years but Trump is providing that additional push for people standing on the ledge.
As least Trump can look at the bright side of it from his viewpoint that those killed who were "illegals" won't be crossing the border anymore.
