not having attended any meetings since about 2001, for reasons of safety (sounds a bit dramatic but i don't like my wife being out on her own late at night where we live now), i have started accompanying her to the mid-week meeting.. when i was young, the ministry school and service meeting were central to training brothers to take the lead.
you were assigned instruction talks, then if you cut it, you moved pretty rapidly to public talks - a full 55 mins at the time.
i was just 18 years old when i gave my first public talk and this was a first step to moving rapidly through the ranks.

It is amazing that the majority of politicians who leave their positions all of a sudden have millions of dollars of net worth on a $200,000 or so salary in Washington. Which honestly, in Washington, is not a huge amount of money considering the cost of homes, college for the kids, etc.
But somehow, they leave at multi-millionaires.

But who are the nanny state idiots as you describe them? Are they you and I? Are they the insurance companies that pay out huge sums of money when someone slips and falls? Is it the legal system that allows for very high punitive damages in negligence cases?

I know this sounds crazy to us who have thrown snowballs when kids, but a snowball is not a snowball when it is wet, rocks or not.
Get a nice wet watery snowball in your gloves, squeeze is so tight until the water starts dripping out, and you basically have a rock in your hand (come on man, we both did this as kids.. lol).
You could put out someone's eye, break a car window, let alone someone's head.
The danger is not from the nice white powdery stuff but rather when it begins to melt.
When I was a kid, we would ride everywhere on our bikes and not know what a helmet was. A helmet? Now, if you let your kid ride without a helmet it is considered child abuse.
