You are probably right. Sometimes with a garden, it is more about convenience and freshness.
In some ways it is like fishing. Add the cost of boats, motors, fuel, ice, tackle, bait, boat storage, fishing licenses, boat and trailer registrations, maintenance, insurance, etc. etc. etc. If you think the fish you catch are a bargain you are wrong.

tomatoes work really well, but zucchini not so much

Yes, zucchini can get rather "wide" when it grows. Probably only one plant for the entire box.
I know one box, if not two, will be used for herbs. In the supermarkets here, there aren't many "bulk" type herbs meaning ones that you just pick them up and put them in a bag. The exceptions are things that people use a lot of here, such as cilantro, parsley, watercress and a couple of other things.
Most herbs are in little packages (basil, thyme, oregano, chives, etc.) and we pay like $2.50 for a little package. It adds up really fast and in the end you end up wasting a lot instead of just picking what you need from the garden. It's not that you can't get stuff cheaper, but you end up driving all over place and driving to Italian store for oregano and basil, to a Jamaican/Haitian place for thyme, etc. You spend more in gas driving all over the place than just paying more for the little packages.

I built about a 3' x 16' x 20" high raised garden in the front of the house where we had some flowers which were always a pain to keep looking good. I didn't buy "real" Earth Boxes since to me they were too expensive (like $40 each) but just went on You Tube and saw how to make my own for about $15 each. Really not much to it. The tubs (18" x 30" x 18" deep) were about $10 each. Then some screen, 8' of PVC pipe and a roll of plastic weed control stuff. A bag or so of potting mixture for each box, a little fertilizer and I am good to go.
I was just wondering if anyone has had success using this method to grow stuff. This isn't the best time to start to grow things here (mid-April) since the typical growing season is coming to an end within the next few weeks but I will find something to grow.
Has anyone else tried these Earth Box things?

i have been able to adapt and make do.

Yes, I have never heard anything good about Amazon, except for the occasional manager on TV who says how great of a place it is to work. Seems like the rank and file see it in a much different light. It also wouldn't surprise me if some of the jobs offered are part time (under 32 hours per week here) so an not having to pay full benefits.
I guess a lot of the hiring has to do with delivery people. Food stores, FedEx, US Postal Service, etc. And the home supply stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) seem very busy every time I have driven by. I guess it's a good time to get projects done when you are out of work. I already built an above ground garden and have 5 of those Earth Box things in there (I made my own, the ones you buy are pretty expensive). I may start a thread and see if anyone else has tried them.

I am in no way an expert in this matter but I thought cell phones already track us. When someone gets lost, kidnapped or something, the companies can tell where you were based on your phone's "pinging" to the tower. If you are within range of two towers, I would expect they could pinpoint you to a very small radius.
Some phones even ping when they are turned off. It used to be that you had to take the battery out to prevent that but newer phones don't have removable batteries (except I think LG phones still have removable batteries).
Anyway, I think they already have the technology to do that.

I don't know about other areas, but they keep showing on the local news here (South Florida) about all the jobs that are available such as:
- US Postal Service
- Home Depot
- Lowes
- Publix (major food chain)
- Amazon (we have a huge warehouse down here)
and about a dozen others.
I guess you have to bring yourself to the fact that you may end up dead if you catch the virus but at least you died having a job.

I'm generally not a Trump fan but I do agree with him that things that affect the entire country should be handled in a centralized manner. Trump is stating that he will dictate when the States can open up again. Many governors, Dems and Reps, are fighting that saying that they have the power, not the President.
Of course, the Constitution puts a great deal of power in the hands of each State. But I agree with him on how these Governors want to dictate how each of their fiefdoms work. So to get anything done, you currently have to appease 50 different Governors. China would never accept that. If they want to get something done on a national level, it is dictated from the top.
The same applies to other national issues such as elections. Having 50 separate "national" elections just doesn't make sense when a President is being chosen to represent the entire country. Have one national election and that is it.
Many times I do not agree with Trump but I agree with him in that States have too much power in the national scenario and constitutionally should be limited. Let the States dictate local issues, not national ones. Trump said, "I'm the President" and that he has to right to overrule the Governors (which technically he cannot do constitutionally but should).
